I agree. The fact Sam doesn't address the BYD EV fires en-mass in China. He literally doesn't cover it unless it's an in your face news article like the freight ship going on fire caused by EVs.
TheChinaShow or ADVchina sure DOSE cover the content Sam doesn't though so I'm subscribed there. I would never drive or be driven in an BYD car ever period.
But I'm still here and I still have a listen to his take on things that he does cover?

The small sample size, lack of controls in this study and only slight difference in results means that no meaningful conclusions can be made. Degradation can easily vary within a given geographic region by driving and charging habits, and with different battery chemistries

Battery longevity is the most important factor to an EV's lasing value as a used vehicle.. Its best to perceive automobile market at a series of exchanges that proceed long after new vehicle production and sales..
When you create products that build a reputation for durability and long life you increase the used value and this in turn increases new vehicle sales becouse the first purchases have more trade in value. This is a long term sale method of intentionally building perceived value over many years.
As battery technology is rapidly evolving the best way to ensure lasting used vehicle value is by making battery replacement as easy and affordable as possible be designing in replacement as part of a long term business plan. This will become of increasing importance as EV transitions from more of affluent urban consumer market to mass adoption by consumers who are looking to maximize returns on vehicle investment over many years.

"will last longer than you will own the car" That's not good enough! I want it to last longer than the guy I sell it to will own it and the guy he sells it to etc. In other words, how about just "likely to outlast the normal life cycle of an ICE vehicle by a long stretch"? EV batteries today will outlast the cars they are in, especially if they are re-used for energy storage and then re-cycled.

I agree that newer LMC batteries are better. I have a Bolt EUV. I thought it was the goofiest iteration of an EV until I did more research. Winter is not good for Bolts, but I’m eager to see if I can make it work by using the cabin heater to 50F, then use the seat and steering wheel heater to keep me warm in heavy clothes.

@@carlsmith5545 - you’re right, no EV can do that. Lucid Air, TeslaS have the range, but not the charge speed. With EVs, you really only save money in town charging at home. On the road, not as much. DCFC stations charge more for faster charge speed negating savings. Then there’s the PITA of finding a station. I chose a Bolt because my use case was for a work taxi. I save $200/mo. I’ve been able to take 400 mile round trips in it for $15, but only because I could charge at their house. To do what you want, there will have to be new battery chemistry.

Great comments and interpretation of facts. With the advent of the internet, surveys have exploded and gone amuck. For example: a survey is done as to whether wearing large belts make people fat. A survey is done and indeed most overweight people DO wear large belts. Therefore the erroneous conclusion is that large belts make people fat. Take surveys expounded by the media and special interest groups with a bucket of salt!

Most of third world is into transitory phase with China getting us used to their brands in ICE/hybrid form. Russia is also 70% Chinese ICE as others have left.

With most modern EVs,.degradation is kind of a mute issue. Even 4+ year old Leaf Plus which is nearly only DC charged and used for road trips has only 7% degradation in a hot climate. Move on.. a bit more range and variety of style and features is where people are focused. Batteries will get smaller/lighter but are not the top factor any more in buying decision.

If Tesla's are going ok after 25-30 years, they will hold their value and people will mass adopt. If their earlier models start to be a problem at 20 years, their resale value is going to dive sharply acordingly along with the company share price. As long as the battery degrades at a consistant pace and does not accelerate, it should be ok.

There's really only one car manufacturer who has both the research and ongoing telemetry to monitor what their car's batteries are doing, how they're being used and have been doing this since over ten years. They've also funded the research of certain battery gurus (in Canada as well as other places) in order to have the best minds working on the problem. It is small wonder then that they have one of the best thermal systems (for both battery heating and cooling) and don't require a "don't burn the battery when rapid charging option" (greetings Porsche and Audi 😂). If there's one company who has the data, been there and done that, then I guess it's... you know who.
