    Took me a couple of years to fully appreciate my Switch.
    I’d go as far as to say it’s my favorite console in the last couple of years ever since the Ps3 came out. I always play docked on my desktop and it’s small form factor is always ready to go in an instant with tons of games from old to new. It gets way more time than my Ps5 which is basically collecting dust.

    What I really love about this series is to find gems I have maybe overseen, which is easy nowadays by this flood of new releases every month or even week.
    I also see a kind of importance for these kind of videos. On the one hand, it shows the industry that for retro style games there is a market. On the other hand, younger generations receive some background knowledge on which games these are based on which can build a bridge waking their interest to try older consoles or the games predecessors.
    To put it in a nutshell, these games are a bridge between generations and it makes it clear that there have to be more episodes on this topic. And if the word "switch" should make it to narrow for a next one, it can be for consoles in general, although I understood why you made the decision here, as on how you explained it.

    I absolutely LOVE retro games. My only complaint is their difficulty level. As an adult in their mid 40s I don't have the time (or the drive) to spend hours getting good at a game. Which is why I typically trend now towards more casual games, games that have been re-released with save states, cheat devices or emulation in which cheats can be added. Heck, even something like Mega Man is an exercise in frustration and I quickly pass on it even though it scratches that nostalgia itch if only for a minute. But throw in a session of Advance Wars and I'm hooked.

    • @Xoulrath_
      @Xoulrath_ Před 11 měsíci +2

      Dang, that sucks. I'm actually finding myself on the opposite end of that problem. I'm mid-40s as well (46) and I've got loads of time that I didn't have before. My kid is an adult approaching her mid-20s. She has a life of her own. I've just got the one.
      I'm also divorced and have been apart from my ex for over 11 years now. I'm still single. All I've got is time lol.
      I've actually been playing Shredder's Revenge over the past week, and doing so on Gnarly. I've been loving the game and the challenge. Aside from the absolute cheap hits that should have been left in the 90s that is. But yeah, it's definitely seen me playing stages over half a dozen times. On the flip side of that, it's great that a game like this is now released with difficulty options for those like yourself who can't spare the time, so that you can still enjoy them. Gaming is honestly getting better in a lot of ways, despite all of the negatives that go along with modern gaming. Cheers.

Great fun with friends since you only lose a life when all players are dead, so you can essentially have one person carry you through if you really want to. Amazing Neo Geo-inspired art and a hard symphonic soundtrack. A couple additional retro style games I’d recommend.
    Celeste is a pretty challenging 2D platformer (especially when you unlock the B-Side levels) the controls are simple with you mainly being able to Jump, Dash, and Climb, but it’s how all that is utilized is what makes it so much fun to play!
    It’s got a great story and a killer OST to boot.
    Second, is Omori.
    For those who enjoyed Earthbound or Undertale (or both) I think this game is something to look into.
    The battle system is similar to that of Earthbound but I’d say it’s a little easier, but still fun to go through, visuals are really nice, I especially love how the battle sprites are drawn, and the music is really good as well.
    but it’s the story is where this game truly shines!
    No spoilers from me but let’s just say, things get dark before they get better.

      I don't think that it's necessary for the SNES, but to get that Genesis 3 button feel, yeah it'll be worth it. I need to get the N64 controller so that I can actually play Ocarina of Time again. The button layout on the Pro controller is awful.

    my recs:
    cyber shadow, great ninja gaiden type game published by yacht club games, the guys who made shovel knight (but made by other people).
    fight'n rage, a great beat em up, albiet very hard because it brings in traditional fighting game mechanics much like streets of rage
    arcade paradise. a very minuscule business sim with collection of arcade game minigames with a story that’s more the main draw, that at one point kinda intrudes on the arcade stuff in the form of a boring ass factory job that goes on for a whole in-game week, but at least you can upgrade the business sim stuff out of the game with “daily” (in the game's time scale) missions.
    toxic crusaders. basically tmnt shredder's revenge with another cheesy 80’s action show about crime fighting mutants, except based on troma movies instead of a parody of frank miller's run on daredevil.
    super meat boy
    one of the first real indie successes, besides cave story. a tough as nails, but never unfair platformer that controls as smooth as butter. and play it on other consoles, too, they got stuff the switch version doesn’t have!
    cave story
    great metroidvania with a great story. haven’t replayed in a while, but it’s definitely held up, since “a while” meant “only 4 years ago”, and the game released in 2009.

    Gotta get a switch oled if you play alot in handheld mode. I was a nay sayer for quite a while but finally bit the bullet while still being able to sell my old launch model for 200. Not bad! And it makes a huge difference, not to mention the larger internal storage helps tremendously

    I think the games that fit perfectly here are the Wonder Boy/Monster Boy games on Switch, All have physical copies (Monster Boy gets expensive 'cause Limited Run) but the digital versions often go on sale for less than 15 dollars and don't take that much space in GB.

    I beat Okami when I was like 9, not that hard. By the way definitely recommend the ps2 version for that awesome end credits song. For some reason every release after the PS2 cut that song out and replaced it with some generic music. While not bad, when you compare it to the original it sounds like junk. So while you showed the PS2 version, I don't know if you're playing the PS2 Version. So what I'm saying is play the PS2 Version, It's worth it.

    There's tons of side scrollers & beat em ups retro bases style on the switch. I'm glad that you mentioned how long these games were feeling too long. That's is why I think personally the retro games of yester year are that much better because of the short length of the games compared to now.

    • @Xoulrath_
      @Xoulrath_ Před 11 měsíci

      I personally found Shredder's Revenge to have stages of a perfect length. But I do agree that some games don't understand the point of levels/stages, and curating the experience for the intended audience.

    Something to keep in mind - Japanese Switch physical releases that have an English release on the eShop *usually* will play in English automatically (except Atlus games for some reason). The Cotton Saturn Tribute with two Cotton games and Guardian Force is worth getting, but also Akai Katana Shin, Castle Shikigami 2, Langrisser 1 + 2, Koumajou Remilia: Scarlet Symphony, and Star Renegades are all gonna tickle pink a retro enthusiast - honestly if you like retro, the switch is just where it's at

    Mushihimesama (Bug Princess) is an excellent shmup. It's in my top 5 of STGa. Which does include another Cave shooter.
    The Switch does have a lot of really good shooters on it. So much so, I considered picking one up, as I hear that it often has better ports (and a few exclusives) than what can be found on Steam (which is what I play on other than mini consoles). I've been really impressed with M2, but there aren't many M2 developed games on Steam.
    Which I can believe. Many Steam shooters take a little work to get setup how I like. I don't know why, but many Steam shmups aren't fullscreen by default.
    My controller of preference is an 8-button Sega Genesis USB controller. And let me tell you, remapping buttons can be a lot of trial an error as I figure out how each game remaps and what they are calling the Genesis buttons. And that's for the ones that I don't need a MayFlash Magic dongle to trick the game to let me use my Genesis controller. Sometimes, even the MayFlash doesn't work.

    • @RetroBirdGaming
      @RetroBirdGaming  Před 11 měsíci +1

      That's the main thing I don't like about using different controllers with different systems. Remapping the buttons. That said, I've had my share of good luck with buttons ending up right where I want them by default.

    Let me ponder for a minute... an old console with hundreds/thousands of retro games yet to be played, or an expensive new console with a handful of "new" retro games? I guess the choice was easier than I thought... but still an entertaining video.
