But then there's our pride... even though we dislike our own country and complain about it all the time, we'd still stick up for it (even when wrong). Land of the free, home of the aggravating. • @mzm153
      @mzm153 Před 9 lety +25

      Vict0r1984 It's the annual AMERICAN Football championship of professional teams in US compete for the title. The teams come each from a different State even though sometimes two different teams from the same state might compete. The final match is pretty much a holiday in which pretty much everyone stop what they're doing to watch it.
      If you ask me whether Eurovision is like Super Bowl, my answer is NO. There is no building bridges, only rivalries, football fans getting into fights, and games that can drag on for hours with constant interruptions.
      The only similarities are the red carpet and press conference with the players just like Eurovision has with the singers. Trust me, Eurovision is much better than Super Bowl. I wish we had something like that in the Americas rather than just being stuck with the same American songs.

    The US girl is probably not trying to be condescending and insulting, it's just the way that they tend to come across sometimes. Notwithstanding, as a Canadian I was a little surprised when I found out that most US people have never heard of Eurovision. I guess it's true that most of them don't watch anything made outside the US. They often assume that the rest of us only watch US media, and don't have any music or film of our own. It's very odd, but sadly true.

I'm from California and me and a lot of my friends are very interested in the cultures of other countries and tend to watch/listen/read to a lot of media from outside the US. There are some Americans who are really close minded about things from other countries but there are just as many fascinated by it, the former just tends to be louder and more outspoken.

    It's nothing like the Superbowl- that's just American i.e. ONE country. Eurovision is numerous different countries coming together internationally. Americans please stop thinking of Europe as one entity!! We're completely different countries with different histories, it's not like the USA.

    • @jlhabitan50
      @jlhabitan50 Před 8 lety

      +Becki P The comparison with the Superbowl was made because they are both live televised events that are watched by more than a hundred people yearly and where teams representing a certain place (in the US, they would be states or major cities; in Europe, entire nations) gather to compete where there can only be one winner (in SB, only two football teams while in ESC, more than a dozen musical acts).

    • @beckip8073
      @beckip8073 Před 8 lety +11

      +jlhabitan50 But it's not a comparison that should be made... a state in america is the equivalent of a city somewhere else- not a country. And Americans frequently refer to travelling to 'Europe' as though it's one frigging country. You have to understand we're utterly separate, but just because of our geographical size Americans think of us as being one unit. We all have different languages, history, cultures, music, television, everything- the fact that we come together is a much more unique occurrence than one country's different states playing sports.

    • @jlhabitan50
      @jlhabitan50 Před 8 lety

      Becki P It's all about context because you're trying to understanding the appeal of one to another. What better way to make such by using one highly viewed live event to another?

    • @JadeSim
      @JadeSim Před 6 lety +5

      jlhabitan50 the reason why people say this isn't a comparison is because Eurovision isn't just a song contest but it's about culture and politics too. The Superbowl is literally just one thing focused on a specific activity. Eurovision doesn't operate the same.

    My personal opinion... Eurovision = A great show where Europe is united by music.
    Superbowl = Dudes who beat the shit out of each other in a boring sport and a shitload of commercials.
    Not trying to offend anyone, people like what they like, and the Superbowl is just... shit to me. Well, I'm European and football is great stuff. I'm the same with the World Cup or the Olympic Games, where people represent their countries with pride, really enjoyable to watch for me =P
    What can annoy me, is how it seems like that Europeans give American things a chance, such as the superbowl, while it seems like Americans stay for themselves.(As in the stereotype about Americans believing they are the best on the world)
    I might not be exactly sure on how Americans handle it, but where I live, people always made a big deal about the Superbowl and still do.
    Eurovision on the otherhand, seems like the only real show, that unites people, thinking countries actually do vote for the songs, but sadly still politically. There have been cases where even long time rival countries would exchange points, which could be like Greece & Turkey, Serbia & Croatia, Russia & Ukraine, even UK & France(Despite they barely pick anything good anymore)
    Just like how I said, that Americans believe they are the best, then it's true Eurovision is a Gay pride(Another stereotype). Which bothers me very much since I'm following the contest close every day going to every single detail. However, I'm not gay myself, but when I was at the contest in 2013 & 2014, you did get the feeling that gay people treat the contest like something of their own and wanna keep it like that. Those types who overreact about something they like, like hooligans at a football match, or a so-called hardcore fan of a person... Such people take it too the extreme and ruin everything about it.
    I did find it hilarious for myself, how you easily can spot a gay person in the comments, by the way they write... Gawd freaking Damn! xD

It just happen to be a big part of "gay culture", and I love it for it!

    I'm Canadian, and I remember my first time watching Eurovision! (which was in Australia, where they LOVE Eurovision, which is why they let Australia participate, lol). It was not like this! I was more like.... "What is this magic? It's so over the top, and I love it!" :P Plus there are some legit good songs every year. And even when they're not, they're often entertaining enough to watch that it's lots of fun!
    But I guess some people would rather compare everything to the Superbowl, talk about how happy the contestants are as if they were 5-year-olds meeting a dude in a Spiderman costume, and listen to "chill, down-to-earth" American rap music with "meaningful lyrics". Different strokes, I guess. Also, way to check every single box on the "Stereotypes of Americans" list.

Likewise, if an American did something good in your eyes? None of the credit belongs to me either. holy sauron because it's not allowed. You can't send A-List global popular artists because it would be a massive imbalance of winnings each year. It would basically be like 5 countries winning each different years out of the rest of Europe because they keep sending their most popular artists. The contest has always been mostly about having fun, so they won't send popular artists because then it'll turn into a "who's more popular game" and that's something Eurovision isn't about.

      Nikolina Jelčić Look at a map showing continents, even though Europe technically isn't a continent. Azerbaijan is mostly in Asia, but if you look at Europe as a whole, a small tip of it reaches into Easter Europe. The Europe continent concept was created in the classical antiquity era.
      Turkey is also still part of Europe, just like Georgia and Kazakhstan as well. The borders of Europe predates all four of those countries. Sure they are not in the EU or Eurozone, however they are part of the continent Europe which means the people that live on those sides could technically call themselves European.

    she is comparing this with the superbowl? please.... so dumb. and about the message... every year there is a message and theme. this year about the refugees. what's the super bowls message? commercials? anyway can't compare it at all. it's not that big of a deal the eurivision. soccer is 1000000x bigger in europe. especially with the european championship coming up this summer

    And yes, Australia did join last year because we are that awesome. Also the only thing I know about Super Bowl is there are some funny ads. There may be some weird type of rugby league involved I'm not sure???

    The gay version of superbowl? Superbowl is the gay version of superbowl. Also, he should've told her about the whole Russia controversy. -However, he probably shouldn't. America would probably just start a war with them, if they find out that not all countries share their point of view.

    I don't think people realize how much Eurovision was important for the whole Europe when it first aired. The first show was in 1956 and the main reason was bringing peace. The whole continent was ruined and was still having major consequences from the WWII and people needed to bond and feel the love again. Sure, now it's more mixed with politics (the whole voting part) but at the end of the day who cares? It's still a great show. I'm sure the girl that reacted couldn't see much from a single show but throughout the history of Eurovision we had some killer vocals. Check Kaliopi or Loreen or Conchita and the list goes on. So America has no right to even comment on this.
    Also, one more thing. "Don't to earth" ?? Girl, the whole video you acted as if you owned the place. Obviously you can't seem to appreciate the different cultures and music. And "our songs have more meaning" ? I bet you were talking about your pop or r'n'b or even rap, so let me remind you: Nicki Minaj, Two Chainz, Rihanna, Drake, need I go on ?...All these songs about booty, sex and twerking. Please, stop embarrassing yourself.

    ..she didn't understand it at all. If she'd watched the whole thing, she wouldn't have said it's like the super bowl (or that american music always has a message.). There are many songs with a message, you know? About world peace and stuff like that. And the Australians were allowed to participate for the first time, because they are long time watchers. Btw, Conchita herself is a symbol for tolerance - and it's really cool that my country (Austria) won in 2014 because of him/her. And just fyi: the ESC has way more viewers than the superbowl and is imo a "more important" event, because all the people of europe participate and kinda unite - that's a really nice thing.
    But what I wanted to say: I'm really annoyed with whtat she said, because it seems like she doesn't know anything about europe or more like she thinks america's better. That's why many people don't like americans - because of that attitude.
