  • This is a review of the Fluke 189 multimeter for use in hobby electronics projects primarily related to amateur radio.

This review was produced to help you decide if the Fluke 189 multimeter will fit your purpose and budget. This is part of a series of multimeters reviews.
A good multimeter for hobby electronic projects should be able to measure millivolts, volts, microamps, milliamps, amps, ohms, nanofarads and microfarads.
If you want to measure picofarads, nanohenry, microhenry or reactance you will need a LCR meters. I cover the two LCR meters I own in another review.
I am not a professional, I am a hobbyist. This review is not sponsored; I bought this multimeter with my own money. I only used and tested this multimeter in CAT I and CAT II environments. I do not have a way to review or test the safety of this meter. I leave the CAT III and CAT IV environments to trained and licensed professionals. It may seem like I am a Fluke fan boy, but I recognize their flaws along with their advantages. There may be unintended mistakes and/or errors in this review.

This is the best Fluke multimeter ever produced, along with the 187.

I managed to find a new old stock fluke 187, fantastic meter, superb accuracy, best fluke meter I have ever owned.

My favorite meter... I have its predecessor, the 89 IV

Beautiful meter, I recently got mine formally calibrated and it was almost bang-on even though it is some 20 years of age by now. I have several DMM's (too many, but they seem to multiply over time 😂) including a couple of bench models and even though they are all really good, I find my self reaching for the 189 all the time. Thanks for the video, best 73 de OZ1LQO

189 is a fantastic meter had one of these for 15 Years+ still accurate to this day the only down side is crap battery life , got a 233 which eats batteries for fun so don't bother with this remote head meter, also got a 112 which is real handy tiddler and a couple of 30 year old 77's as tool box work horses with fantastic battery life and rubber bumpers, I remember the RS salesman demoing this meter in the 80's by throwing it against the wall!

Brymen BM869s still best in slot for 1/3 of the price.

I think Brymen looked at the 189 when they designed the bm869🙂
