  • This is a review of the Fluke 117 multimeter for use in hobby electronics projects primarily related to amateur radio.

This review was produced to help you decide if the Fluke 117 multimeter will fit your purpose and budget. This is part of a series of multimeters reviews.
A good multimeter for hobby electronic projects should be able to measure millivolts, volts, microamps, milliamps, amps, ohms, nanofarads and microfarads.
If you want to measure picofarads, nanohenry, microhenry or reactance you will need a LCR meters. I cover the two LCR meters I own in another review.
I am not a professional, I am a hobbyist. This review is not sponsored; I bought this multimeter with my own money. I only used and tested this multimeter in CAT I and CAT II environments. I do not have a way to review or test the safety of this meter. I leave the CAT III and CAT IV environments to trained and licensed professionals. It may seem like I am a Fluke fan boy, but I recognize their flaws along with their advantages. There may be unintended mistakes and/or errors in this review.

    I like your reviews
    I think it's a great meter.Not 87v great but for "electrical installation"it works perfect.
Falls into spec on almost all categories. As far as the 1 mv reading I believe it actually falls into spec considering the error margin. As far as electrical installation and maintenance goes 1 mv is not a usual reading taken anyway.
It designed for electrical so as far as ma and ua goes it's not designed for that.
I think it's a solid meter for it's intended use.Of course like all Fluke products yes I agree .. overpriced.
And your right... leads leave a little left to be desired
Thanks for your in depth review.I like all your reviews

I think when this meter came out in 2006 (well, I believe the 115 came out in 2006, the 117 came later) it had good commercial value. But it's now 16 years later, the price for this meter hasn't dropped (it only became more expensive) and the competition completely surpassed this meter at this pricepoint.
This meter should imho be priced in the $100-$125 priceclass, so more than $100 less than it's current price.
This is mainly an argument for the consumer market of course. If you're buying this meter comercially, especially as a large company, the extra money doesn't matter (by then, it's probably not your money anyways 😉)

Top class reviews. Would it be possible to only compare multimeters intended for electronics and separate comparisons for electrician’s multimeters as most people will have at least two multimeters.
It is rare and indeed expensive for one multimeter to cover all situations.

Thanks, that is a good idea. Currently I only have three meters that I consider electricians meters. I will add the comparison of the three electricians meters I have to my todo list.

I have both. I am an electrician lol thank you for the review. Wish I could have seen this video before but I can tell you as of now it is enough. Along with the Klein MM720.
