It’s amazing that the Oilers actually made it to the conference finals that year despite an depletion of talent the previous year, but this would be as far as they would go then go through 4 or 5 years of terrible seasons and of course the Blackhawks went on to the Stanley Cup final.

This would be the last great run of that Oilers team, which started with the '82-'83 season when they made it all the way to the 1st Cup Final appearance, & concluded with the '92 team that got swept vs Chicago, practically a 10-year run of playoff success. Little did anyone know just how far they'd fall within the next year.

I remember in 1993 Ted Green had a really rough start to begin the season and he was replaced by Glen Sather as head coach. Oilers also traded away Damphouse to Montreal where he won a Stanley Cup, and at some point we also traded away Scott Melanby and Bernie Nichols.

The year I thought the Hawks might do it, but it wasn’t to be. It sure was sweet beating the Oilers 4 straight, but after that Game 1 collapse against the Penguins, didn’t put their mitts on Lord Stanley’s Cup.

They won a few in the 2000s/2010s, so no need to lament missing out back in '92. Nobody was going to knock off the Penguins that year. That's what made the Islanders upset of them in '93 the greatest playoff upset in hockey history.
