In most of the older arenas the ice was much slower, slushy and not even close compared to today... There was also much less room to get up speed due to the much smaller rinks... Along with the fact that the faster you skated the harder you got hit by the head hunters that were very proliferate at the time...

Nordiques were 12-38-7 before Valeri Kamensky showed up. After, they went 8-10-5.

Today’s game looks faster than 90% of what I’m seeing here. Pretty cool to see the difference.
