He still had plenty in the tank for Chicago in 87-88. Had his best goal scoring season since 1984. I really thought he was one of those guys ticketed for 500 career goals at one point but he faded with the Sabres in his early 30s. Those first batch of highlights really show how DARK the old Capital Centre was!
He started off hot with the Blackhawks, scoring 30 goals in the team's first 43 games, then cooled off during a year in which the team was wracked by injuries. He took a number of bad penalties in the 1988 playoff series against St. Louis which cost the team, but on the other side of the coin scored 5 powerplay goals in that playoff series, still a team record (most PPG in a series by one player). Echoing what Steve wrote in his post here, Vaive took more abuse in front of the net than anyone I can remember watch playing over the course of his playing days (crosschecks to the back and neck, getting hacked, etc.), and that undoubtedly contributed to his career's decline.
10:50- true female Hawks fan, 5 beers deep! (i counted her cups lol) But seriously, Vaive was awesome to watch, just would take whatever punishment it took, to stand in there and take a beating. Plus great hands and a wicked shot. Nice video.
Unfortunately, other than two of Denis Savard's goals shown from a news broadcast recap, I don't. The game was broadcast by St. Louis station KPLR, hopefully it'll resurface. Been waiting over 35 years to see it on screen...
Thank you
