    "Choose someone as a successor and you will inevitably be succeeded.
    Choose someone hungrier and you will be devoured.
    Choose someone quicker and you won't dodge the blade at your back.
    Choose someone with more patience and you won't block the blade at your throat.
    Choose someone more devious and you'll hold the blade that kills you.
    Choose someone more clever and you'll never know your end.
    Despite these cautions, an apprentice is essential. A Master without an apprentice is a Master of nothing."----Darth Sidious.

      You are mistaken.
      Revan did not create the rule, nor did he give Bane the idea.
      All Revan stated was that each master should only have one apprentice, and any master having more than one is a fool. He also said there should only be one Dark Lord of the Sith to rule over all the others and when he is weak than he is to be replaced.
      Darth Bane was INSPIRED by this teaching and personally had the thought of making it where the Sith only numbered one; he quickly dismissed the idea and then decided to make it where the Sith only number two.

      The Master, The Apprentice and The Grand Assasin
      With other sith assasins craving the 3rd title but also being in a state where they're competitig hardly with themselves, the 3 have complete power over them not being able to overthrow any of them until evolving, eventually being able to take the Grand Assasin's place, the assasin tries to become something more and challanges the apprentice for that title, the apprentice challanges the master to complete power

    It was always unclear to me how there can only be two when in another corner of the galaxy there could be countless master/apprentice duos also calling themselves Sith. But the way I understand it now is that there is just one long line of Sith that can be traced back? Vader being the apprentice of Sidious, who was the apprentice of Plagueis, who was the apprentice of Tenebrous and so forth, right? If so, how far CAN it be traced?

      +Andrei Terbea It started with Darth Bane, then Darth Zannah, then Darth Cognus, and on, and on, until Darth Tenebrous, Darth Plagueis, and Darth Sidious who is the last master of the Sith, though he had his apprentices who we see in the movies. Darth Maul, Darth Tyrannus, Darth Vader. Before Bane there were countless Sith (kind of like the Jedi) so no real timeline or lineage of Sith before, though you could list several of the leaders of the Sith before the Rule of Two. (like Marka Ragnos, Naga Sadow, Exar Kun, Darth Revan, Darth Malak, etc)

      Or if the master died before fully training their apprentice, which is a definite possibility when fighting a war against the Jedi. @kharyrobertson3579 Před 8 lety +35

    I am pretty sure that the rule of two was adopted after Revan learned of the prophecy of the chosen one that states that the chosen one will restore "balance" to the force. The rule of two ensures that as long as the Jedi try to spread across the galaxy to protect it, that the chosen one will always choose the dark side since they have purposely kept themselves at numbers and relative power levels less than those of the Jedi. This is proven to be effective when Vader manages to slaughter the VAST majority of Jedi in the universe when he joins the Dark side with only the help of Darth Sidious and the Republic army. This tactic was extra effective because if the Jedi chose to try and counter it by lowering their numbers, the Sith could effectively assassinate the few Jedi and grab control of the galaxy anyway, with or without the chosen one. The infighting of the old Sith order only helped to reinforce Revan's idea that there is no real need for that many Sith lords in the universe, as long as the chosen one chooses the Dark side. Just my thoughts though.

  • @lucidity1
    @lucidity1 Před 8 lety +15

    I perceive the rule of 2 as the greatest flaw of the sith. a solution that may be worse then the problem.
    the rule of two seemed to apply even before revan and bane. between every sith and their apprentice the core principle already applied. limiting the sith to only one pair is not much of a solution. it prevents infighting between the masters but that is all.
    under the rule of 2 you never teach your apprentice everything. this is the flaw. once you teach them everything you know you are of no value to them and they will dispose of you. you will withhold knowledge from your apprentice in an act of self-preservation. preferably the most powerful secrets of the force because once your apprentice thinks (s)he knows everything you are willing to teach them they will still dispose of you. that powerful secret is the ace up your sleeve for when they do. every time an apprentice succeeds powerful secrets are lost to the ages. the secrets die whit the masters who take it whit them into the grave.
    a clear example of this can be seen between Sidious and Plagueis. Plagueis has a technique that allows the force to create life. Sidious slays him and is then unable to recreate his masters work, all that is left is a story to lure Anakin to the darkside. the secret remains lost to the ages. Plagueis took it whit him to the grave.

    What I love about Revan's version the the rule of two before Bane is how he only used sith acolytes as a means to lower Jedi recruitment, but treated them like dirt and left them starved so he could horde power for the only two true Sith Lords, himself and Malak. It was a brilliant combination of the true rule of the sith but still having a decent army at his disposal.
    It's one of my favorite aspect of the rule of two because it feels so mystical with so many dark Jedi calling themselves sith until you see the true lords and know that there was always only two. I'm really glad Dooku and Sidious carried Revan's legacy with the agents and Inquisitors.

  • @starfthegreat

    I think that another reason Sith Lords take an apprentice is their desire to exercise the power they have accumulated. Through their study of the Dark Side, Sith Lords would have acquired an immense amount of power which they would then want to use on someone, and possibly gain some form of pleasure out of it.

    Still really dislike the idea that the sith are gone just because Sidious and Vader died. What is there to stop some new dark side user from adopting the Sith ideology? Sith holocrons are canon so they could seek out one of those or they could go to Korriban (can't recall the silly new canon name) and seek out ancient knowledge there.
    I hope they either revive the Sith or somehow clarify why new Sith can't rise because I find the current "The Sith ended with Vader killing Sidious." explanation extremely unsatisfying.

    • @tengkualiff
      @tengkualiff Před 8 lety +1

      In canon, we only know that kylo is a dark jedi and snoke is just a figure. He might however, transition to become a true sith once he obtains the holocrons and sith knowledge. hopefully making his own sith ideology.

    • @halfdangrafeldt7239
      @halfdangrafeldt7239 Před 8 lety

      That's what I'm hoping as well.
      I strongly believe that the statement that the sith are gone was not meant as a permanent statement.
      I would like to see a return to the old republic non canon type of Sith... Or something similar. Not in the sense that I want to see hundreds of sith and jedi battling, I think that could get a bit old a bit too fast. But maybe a more collectivist twist to this new sith ideology, it would fit well with the more collectivist vibes the First Order is giving off.
      But yes, it would be a shame to just let the Sith order die... Especially now that there's a chance for writers to flesh out sith history and heritage all over again after the old canon was removed.

    • @tengkualiff
      @tengkualiff Před 8 lety

      personally i dont mind the stories to be twisted but the names of revan and bane had left a legacy on the sith history. It would be a shame if they removed some Sith Lords and Planets and completely changed the whole thing. I would mind parts of it that are changed but Korriban and stuff is stuck on me.

    • @halfdangrafeldt7239
      @halfdangrafeldt7239 Před 8 lety

      +Tengku Aliff If nothing else... Making Revan canon again, even with a somewhat changed backstory, would be fantastic and easy fan service. Basically it would be crazy of them not to bring him back.
      But yeah, I can't see them just leaving the Sith dead. Some of the EU is a treasure trove of possibilities to flesh out the Sith more for your average more casual Star Wars fan in upcoming films.
      I think Kylo Ren's training in the next would be an excellent opportunity for the audience to hear Snoke tell Kylo about Sith legends, regardless if Snoke is a Sith or not. Also Revan would be a natural role model for Kylo considering the whole light side and dark side thing... which would also fit with the idea of Vader/Anakin's spirit still being torn between the two whereas Revan managed to master them both... So if Snoke wants to see Kylo reach his fullest potential as a force user, telling him of a grey Sith(for lack of better words... or grey Jedi but that doesn't feel quite right) would make sense. Additionally I think a new official canon for Revan would be less clear cut between dark and light like it was in the games... it feels more likely they'll have him walk a middle path and if they do what I propose he would need to keep identifying as a Sith.

      Yeah, this is a point often left misunderstood. The prequels overplay the concept of the Sith as an absolute evil. If the Sith represented total chaos and destruction, they would not have built stable empires that last millennia. The Sith worship order and control, they more represent an anti-democratic, totalitarian philosophy of aggregation of knowledge and power rather than an "evil." Many Sith are "evil" because of the craving of power.

    I've got a great theory for you to consider in another video: the rule of two applies not just to the dark side, but the light as well. If the Sith become stronger when fewer in number, than the Emperor's biggest weakness of overconfidence is twofold because with the passing of Yoda and Obi Wan, Luke could tap into an extraordinary amount of power as the sole Light Side user in the entire galaxy. That is why Luke could rival Vader and Sidious despite having far fewer years of training. He had all the power of the Light Side of the force all to himself. But hey, that's just a theory. Lemme know what you think!

  • @iSteelRazorBladeGAMING

    *This is why it makes so much sense for Snoke to be a former Sith Lord such as Darth Bane of Plagueis. Plagueis, after faking his death, oversees the failure of the rule of two throughout the rise and fall of the empire, after his own apprentice "Sidious," attempted to kill him, and Vader killed sidious. Therefore he created the Knights of Ren, a more civilised and less power hungry order than the sith. By renaming himself "Snoke," he officially abandons the sith.*

    there is one Overwhelming problem with the rule of two is that it's based on the assumption that the master would never die. I know Bane used the snake anthology, but it seems like the rule of would be like if you filled a cup 75% of the time and disposed the rest and then repeat the process. Before too long, so much knowledge is lost, it is minute. in order for the rule of two to work, you have to assume that the reason the touch is passed is because your apprentice has surpassed you. The Reality is sometimes 1.people get lucky (as we see with Galen and the star-killer clone when they fought Darth Vader, or 2. They cheat. (As we see with Palpatine)
    I'd argue that the Sith are inherently and inevitable unsustainable because power is an ends for them, and it will never end it's a consuming ideology and when you consume everything with no other purpose, it will eventually get to the point where you consume yourself. Really the only time the Sith have been partly sustainable is with the Sith empire.
    Honestly I think if the Sith Wish to be sustainable, they'd have to adopt a culture similar to the mandolorian code.

    Three questions:
    1. Does this mean either Maul or Dooku was not a true Sith?

    3. What was the plan for Luke?

    • @robk1990
      @robk1990 Před 7 lety +2

      Harleylover14 Maul & Dooku where true Sith, they where given the title of "Darth" which is the same as a Jedi being given the title of knight or master.
      Dooku's apprentices aren't true Sith. More like acolytes & assassins.
      The plan for Luke was to be the eventual successor of Sidious. Being the child of Vader & Anakin (they are two beings in one) he was the strongest Force sensitive being saved Sidious himself and would have been the perfect apprentice & successor; hence why Sidious told him to kill Vader & take his place as the apprentice

    • @Harleylover14

      Not sure, at least within 10 years. One of the many problems with how the prequels where written was with the time gaps and the events that happen between the movies, they aren’t addressed and leave your head scratching.

    • @6611nitro
      @6611nitro Před 7 lety +3

      In the order asked, Maul and Dooku were a cheat to the rule. The idea was that one would eventually kill the other and become the true apprentice or both would be killed by Anakin and replaced. Neither one had the full teachings, same with general grievous, so he didn't technically violate the rule. This ties in with my second point but suffice it to say without the full teachings you aren't a true Sith.
      Dooku's apprentices like Dooku himself never gained the full Sith teachings and served only as dark side force users. The differences is that by learning the teachings of the true Sith a dark side user becomes aware of certain details they could not have fathomed before, the concept of immortality, the accoutrements of power on a grand scale, and of course galactic domination. They were strong for sure but they were small minded and focused so much on hate and personal power they couldn't see the bigger picture.
      Luke was supposed to kill Darth Vader and become the new apprentice. See Darth Vaders body was so screwed up he could never become a true master, it's buried somewhere in the expanded lore but once your more then 50% machine your true potential with the force is locked. Like Vader you might still be obscenely powerful but there are now limitations to your personal connection to the force that can't be overcome normally. With Luke he had the same potential as Vader did before he got f-cked up in that fight on Mustafar so he was the perfect replacement.

  • @ocadioan
    @ocadioan Před 7 lety +20

    The Rule of Two seems far too prone to accidentally wiping out the Sith Order completely, or at the very least, losing massive amounts of knowledge along the way. It ultimately doesn't focus on anything other than one-on-one combat, as everything else is irrelevant to succeeding the Master. That means that plenty of non-one-on-one-combat knowledge could be lost with every iteration. Not to mention what would happen if the Master and apprentice were on a ship that accidentally exploded.
    Plus, you say it was a success, but given the 1000 years it took to achieve galaxy conquest for 2 decades, I would argue that pre-Rule of Two Sith were far more successful. Not to mention that when push came to shove, the Sith that had ended up after 1000 years of Rule of Two were only barely better than the Jedi that had basically had no major opposition for that millenia.
    Now, if I was to design my own system, it would be the Rule of 2nd Order. Basically, there is 1 master at the top, which has two apprentices. When the master deems them ready, they can take two apprentices of their own, and so forth it goes. Whenever an apprentice wishes to advance a rank, they must first duel and kill the other apprentice, and then their master, who is to always tell his master what his apprentices have not yet been properly taught in(to make sure that nothing is lost upon advancement). When an apprentice wins over his master, his apprentices must duel the apprentices of the other apprentice(slain earlier) for the right to be the new two apprentices, and if they have apprentices, the same applies to them. The same system applies if the apprentice loses the duel against the other apprentice or against his master.
    This system has the benefits of providing the Sith with as many levels of apprentices as they can hold on to(giving them the ability to not only work in the shadows), and provides for a clear cut advancement policy that always makes sure to have spares to ensure the Sith order's survival, even if an event takes out the entire top management.

    The method of the student destroying the master in order to transcend them not only shows how effective they all were at teaching the Dark Side, but also in choosing worthy apprentices to whom they could pass on their knowledge.
    The Sith leave selfish, prideful lives, dedicated to the pursuit of power yet, almost ironically, a Master's last acts as Dark Lord is entirely selfless to the Sith Order.
    A Dark Lord of the Sith must constantly and selflessly pass his knowledge and power onto his apprentice, even though they know it would result in their eventual death.
    The idea of all of this accumulating in Palpatine and finally Anikan just makes them all the more fascinating as characters.
    Thanks for the video!

    You show great understandning of the Rule of Two. I was waiting for a mistake, but dident found one. I have read Darth Bane-trilogi to many times to count so it is nice to see others that really grasp what its about. And you did presented it 5 times better than I ever would in under 10min. Some points however.
    Was longer time between Revan and Bane.
    Deception, betrayal and cunning was tools of the dark side. Those was less used before Bane. Thats why he went into hiding, instead of building great armies like the sith of old.
    No mention of Lord Kaan or Brotherhood of Darkness, but okey, not super-relevant.
    Also, Lumiya did kind of follow Rule of Two, as did Darth Caedus. They where part of the old canon like Darth Krayt.
    Great video. I would sub if I already havent done it.

    The rule of two is stupid in my opinion. The idea to purge a peoples and keep those peoples at the brink of extermination is far more extreme than tweaking a philosophy.
    The original purge was necessary, I will agree, but the order should have changed its values to a more self sustaining one. As an example, the peoples could aspire, not for themselves to become the strongest, but to create an ultimate being. A cult with rigorous discipline to subscribe to the ideology of the strongest group, rather than the strongest individual.
    So like Mandalorians with the force.

      +Logical-Functions Model 93 The big problem is Sith ambitions. Say you have 1 real strong Sith. Then 4 less strong Sith. The less strong want to rule. They combine their strength to overpower the real strong one. Now there are 4 less strong and no real strong. That what Sith ambition, the craving could do. Very hurtfull.
      The brink of extermations part however. Totally agree, its dangerous. If both did die, then all would be gone, if not someone actually did pick up some stored sith knowledge. Then it could begging again.

      Yeah, but the problem ceases being a problem when you change the mindset of the "Sith".
      Combining my solution with your example, instead of 5 Sith with an individualistic mindset, you have five acting for the greater good of their group.
      Basically, they would be a brotherhood that understood their place. The 4 would not unite against the 1 for the 5 of them would be stronger than the 4 of them.
      Like I said, a change of philosophy, (in my opinion,) would have been better, easier, and cheaper.

      Logical-Functions Model 93
      Yes, but the Sith ambition is part of the dark side, it comes natural from it. The "greater good" was exactly what Lord Kaan wanted and that would fail the individual Sith. Darth Bane killed them. The Sith Order is there to uplift the individual, not the other way around.

    • @logical-functionsmodel9364
      @logical-functionsmodel9364 Před 8 lety

      Wilfer88 Which is where the change of philosophy comes into the discussion.
      The way that the Sith order would become stronger is if they had focused their energy on changing the philosophy rather than changing their numbers.
      To compare what they have done, imagine you have a chaotic nation, (like Japan in the Sengoku Jidai,) now Bane's solution would be like saying that since everybody wants power and prestige that we should purge everybody save two to continue the nation.
      My alternative is to say that we need to purge impurities, but we should allow the nation to come back with rigorous guidelines and focused philosophies.
      Ambition is a broad and complicated issue. From by brief studies I would say that it comes from a survival compulsion to attain the "best" situation with the minimal energy required.
      I would think that it would be safe to assume that the reason that ambition is a drive for the Sith is because of how easy it is to gain instant gratification to seeing the progression of their powers.
      I would say that the easiest sweeping statements of the Jedi and Sith is that they embody two popular survival methods that evolution has given us. Those strategies being, cooperation and competition.
      However, I must mention that these are philosophies. True, Sith are compelled to ambition, but so are all living organism, (although we experience it in different ways.)
      My point is that it is the philosophy of the Sith to embrace "darker" emotions (and then realizing that, de facto, having to shun all "lighter" emotions,) not an irresistible urge.

      Logical-Functions Model 93
      The philosophy of the Sith could really be one thing, but the nature of the dark side is always persistent. Old ways dident work for the sith, Rule of Two dident really work spott on when it comes to results, Rule of One neither.
      The point with Rule of Two was to in the best possible way to let philosophy help the individual in the nature of the dark side. You cant stop the infighting of the Sith becouse of the dark side. The old ones, strong in the force, alway falls becouse of it. But with Rule of Two, it is always the weakest one in the force, that die in the infightning.

    good video as usual, Stupendous wave. Hey, on an unrelated note, I think I noticed something to look into in Star wars force awakens: In Rey's force vision, we find her younger self crying after a leaving ship, doesnt it look just like Han Solo's freighter in which he used to retrieve the Millineum Falcon? That would tell me Han left her on Jakku. Just a bit of food for thought. Keep up the good work, Wave!

    #Suggestion: The Yuuzhan Vong had used genetically altered bio-mechanical DNA to create armor, weapons and ships. A group of Kaminoans was sent to the Yuuzhan Vong's location to get all of their bio-mechanical technology so that they could alter it to make more stable weapons and technology. Finally they completed their task and set aside a group of clones to experiment on. The Kaminoans created a super set of body armor that was able generate bio-mechanical light sabers grown from the forearms of a humanoid host after the bonding process was complete along with full body armor that would make itself appear to protect the host from any bodily harm or at the host's command. CT 5689 (Hex), CT 2715 (Blackout), CT 4987 (Saber), CT 6612 (Doc), CT 8156 (Hawk), and CT 8693 (Rhino) were troopers that were specially selected for this bio-armor bonding process according to their areas of skill and for the long-term use of them in the future. When their bio-body armor would surface, they each looked like biologic clone troopers (like living clone trooper armor), had light sabers, blasters and various other weaponry grown from their now altered bodies. Then they wanted to retract their armor, it would go back inside their bodies and appear like any other Jango Fett clone. Also their bio-armor became part of their genetic structure and it could be inherited by their descendants. Blackout, Doc, and Rhino left the Imperial army after order 66 because like their other 3 comrades, their new bio-genic armor automatically repaired any abnormality in their bodies which included disintergrating their inhibiter chips, and reduced their aging process 5 times slower than the average human. These three also joined the rebellion almost as soon as it was formed after their defection from the storm troopers. Rhino found a jedi female that was running from the Inquisitors while he was still in the recently renamed storm troopers and he was stricken by her beauty so he called on his bio-armor and used his light sabers and superior combat skills to kill the attacking Inquisitor. Master Teriah Vintus was grateful to Rhino and she and escaped with Blackout and Doc after they succeeded in their battle against the other 3 members of their special commando unit. Saber woke up from his unconsciousness to find the bodies of Hawk and Hex beside him and anger swelled up deep inside him until he let out a blood-curdling cry and wanted revenge against Rhino, Doc and Rhino for turning against his unit. Saber was greatly injured himself and he called out his armor again which began healing him at an accellorated rate then he also left the Storm troopers to exact his revenge on his brothers. A few years later Saber was found by Master Mace Windu who had became a dark jedi that also could wield force-lightning. Mace took Saber as his apprentice and he taught him Vaapod (combat/light saber dueling), shatter point, and all of his other force knowledge including force-lightning. Rhino was taught how to be a jedi by Teriah Vintus (his wife) and they later had a son named: Jango Vintus who after he was 14, his own bio-armor 1st appeared.

    Great video! Here is some food for thought.
    The Rule of Two took 1,000 years to plan with the start of Darth Bane ending with Darth Sidious. It lasted 20 years before both the apprentice and the master were destroyed.
    I'm not sure the Rule of Two could be called "brilliant."

    What he says at 7:30 -ish is so true, and I think that the book ends of the rule of two era held the most powerful Sith (Bane&Sidious) Particularly because it was many years, not until Bane was well past his prime, that zannah dared to challenge him, leading to that slow increase in how powerful the sith needed to be to suffer a bit of a tremor in the early days of the rule of 2

    it is very logical to undergo such a strict rule but in doing so they did indeed amplified the next generations powers and cunning like you said like a power cycle that gains power with each rotation, and did kept the sith in line and thus keeping them into existence til the end.

    That's an awesomely detailed explanation. I always thought that the Rule of Two stemmed from Darth Bane, and didn't know that Revan originally devised it. Makes sense. If a man could think of such a revolutionary concept that made the Sith so efficient, it's HIM. He was a true genius at understanding people's minds.
