Finesse Jigs - Get More Bites And Catch Bigger Bass!

  • Why finesse jigs? When should you throw them? What are they for? Are they really that effective at catching quality and quantity at the same time? We're going to cover everything you need to know about Finesse jigs in this video!
The finesse jig shines throughout the Spring and early Summer. It produces consistently around cover, docks, and even around chunk rock. It has all the same fish catching qualities as a full size jig but it allows you to downsize your equipment and line to adapt to changing conditions.
The next time you're on a shaky head, dropshot, or Texas Rig bite, consider throwing a finesse jig instead and you might be surprised at the number of big bass that had been lurking in front of you all along.

Went and picked up my first glide/s waiver style bait called the jackall gantia 180. Followed some of y’all’s tips and went out on a cold front day after it had rained the day before and caught an 8 right off the bank and a 3 1/2 just after that having twitched it right next to a piece of cover. Awesome little bait and I’m a firm believer in this style of bait now having caught many more smaller fish the rest of the day. Cheers from Georgia!

A big thing with finesse jigs, the trailer make a huge impact with regard to fall rate. Like said in other comments, some use the finesse jigs with a TRD or other small stick bait. On the flip side a Paca chuck will fall slow but, hopping it off of the bottom, you get a slow flutter. Both methods have their pros.

  • @logicalrationalfishing7481

Lost a really good bass because of something you mentioned, was fishing that Keitech jig (football you showed, not the stronger casting model) with a tiny Paca chunk and using a 7'MH with 16lb Sunline FC Sniper. Seemed right because of the weight, could still cast a mile, had a solid 5+ maybe 6 pound largemouth on; got anxious because he kept making runs at the boat, torqued down on the fish and the line went limp almost instantly... Was worried I had my first breakoff during a fight and left a bait in a fish, but reeled in the lure to notice my hook went from a "J" shape to past an "L" shape... A good old Medium powered casting rod is all those amazing jigs need, don't push them though, sharp hooks, good build, but lacking shank and bend strength...

Gunna have one tied on from here n out. I had a big mop jig on with a gambler mega daddy and cam across a giant pairing up. Got her to bite 4 times and swung twice but she was only suckling it in and crushing the claws. Good thing is a cold front came through and knocked them back so I'll have some more chances!

I always considered a finesse jig anything under 1/4 ounce, hair jigs, bitsy bugs. I took uncle josh pork grubs, took a koosh ball apart and with a big sewing needle used pieces of the koosh ball rubber to add legs to the grubs.

there is a fairly small river near me. there are largemouth in it and i catch them all the time but almost exclusively on soft plastics. they don't hit anything else. they hide behind rocks and near laydowns. there isn't grass or any other cover. they can be hard to catch too. the bite will turn off and it seems nothing will work.
i was there yesterday just throwing soft plastics around. it was dead. i looked in my back pack saw a finesse jig (5/16 oz). i tied it on my size 25 spinning reel with a 6-6 medium rod. first cast i got bit. at first i thought i was hung on a rock then the drag was taking off so i knew it was a fish. it was so heavy on that spinning reel setup. eventually i get it about 10 feet in front of me (i'm on the shore). the fish jumps, shakes his head and out came the jig. sigh, it was a beast and was probably my PB for that particular river. the jig got me bit when nothing else would.

I know you like the Maxima, it is very strong [way over tests its rating] but it is also very large diameter and stiff. I have been using the Sufix Siege for leader and it is really tough and strong without being so stiff. Great video as usual.

    • @mcaetano2000
      @mcaetano2000 Před 6 lety

Don't compare different lines by pound test: that's a huge mistake! Compare them by line diameter! Try two different lines of the same diameter and then see which one is stronger and which one has the characteristics you want. P-Line CXX is one of the strongest lines for a given diameter, but it has a lot of memory (not good on spinning reels). For a strong line without much memory you have Sufix Elite. I think Sufix Siege is very strong too, but a bit more stiff than the Elite. The Siege will have a bit more sensitivity though.

Okay, I had this exact thing happened to me. I'm on the bank above a culvert, and I can see a big bass right on the bank. I threw a jig with a sweet beaver green pumpkin trailer in PB&J, and it came to the bank when it landed on the bottom and stared at it I hopped it and it spooked it. What should I have done? Should I have let it sit? It also swam right over to my Junebug color stick bait beforehand. I think this is very important, and you would really be helping me out. Just 2 weeks ago.

Did I hear you mention Lake Cumberland in Somerset, KY? Have you fished there before?

Curious as to why you trimmed the skirt of that jig off of the side of the boat. Why not put it in a bag and throw it away?

I have a 6’8” medium Dobyns Sierra. I’m confident to throw the Keitech Finesse Football, but do you think I could get away with using it for the Dirty Jigs Finesse jig too? I’m usually running 20 lb power pro with 10-12 lb Sunline fluoro leader

I noticed crossover setup is the 6'10" Zodias. I'm on the fence between this and the 6'10" Expride for an all around medium casting rod (jerkbaits, finess jigs, small square bills etc). I don't have anywhere near me to test either rod in person before purchasing. The closest thing I've been able to get my hands on in stores was the Curado 6'10" medium. So can u guys give me your opinions of the two and how one might feel different from the other? 6'10" Zodias Medium vs Expride 6'10" Medium. Also I'm inclined to just pull the trigger on the Zodias since the Expride won't be available until early July 😡

Chur? Stop embarassing yourselves and stop using that bumpkin word. That's the problem with an island that is so far away from everyone else on the planet.

It can't mean "whatever I want it to". Either it means hi, or bye, or thanks, it can't just mean all of it. Just stop using CHUR on an international comment section, it's embarassing for you.

Matt I live on lake Cumberland. I'm not any good at jig fishing, but everybody i talk to either say green pumpkin or blue black.
I know you and Tim were here last year on Cumberland and Dale Hollow. Seen the video on Dale Hollow. Still waiting on the
Lake Cumberland. But why do you say some orange for Cumberland? Also did I miss the Cumberland video?
