DIY Paint over Vinyl Wallpaper & Border (Part 1)
www.russolinatzpainting.com
In this video, I am going to pain over Vinyl wallpaper and a border. I talk about cutting away any loose or unfurling seams and then sealing the surface with Gardz sealer. I then use my 4 and 6 inch taping blades along with All Purpose Joint Compound to skim the seams or edges out with mud to help conceal these edges or valleys. I aslo explain how I keep the mud in the center of my blade by reorganizing it in either a clockwise or counter clockwise half circular swipe. The All Purpose Joint Compound will shrink, so its important to do a few coats.

I work for a luxury mobile home seller. A large majority of my customer have the proverbial "Champagne taste on a Beer budget." Full finished sheetrock in today's manufactured home drives the price up exponentially and busts their budget. The solution is to order the vinyl sheetrock that's standard, get the other nice upgrades instead, and just pop the batten strips, caulk, mud, paint! So, thank you very much for the DIY! I'll be sharing it a lot.
Thanks Laurel!
the hardest thing about that advice is the corners. they never look quite right.
I never knew you could paint over wallpaper.
Look forward to episode - 2.

lhdz00 Thank you! I appreciate your comment!
Love your prep. So many people just think they can paint over anything. With no prep.
Wendy Rawady
Hi Wendy-
Thank you for your comment! The prep work is the most important because you have to start with the proper foundation or surface before primer and paint. I appreciate you noticing!
Russ
Very detailed instructions; detailed enough for a beginner! Thank you!

+RussOlinatzPaintShow I have a gallon of Kilz oil base primer to use over vinyl paper. Can I use latex paint over it?

Thanks!
HELP! what if the wallpaper has already been painted with a latex paint without using the oil based primer it looks bad where nail holes were patched how can it be fixed?
I'm looking for some advice. Great video BTW. I just purchased a manufactured home with vinyl gypsum board and there are batten strips all along the walls. Can I take those batten strips off and mud the seams? Any tips I should consider before doing so?
ive done that myself and it seems to work fine. the downside is that without a solid foundation, the mobile home flexes during seasonal weather changes and can cause the seems to crack. also, its nearly impossible to get the corners right do id suggest keeping it up in the corner of rooms.
Will this method also get rid of painted stripes on a wall? I'm about to paint my daughters room and she did her room in stripes, but now we want a solid color in there and I'm afraid that the edges of the stripes will still show through even after painting since it's a different thickness.
Thank You so much for the great easy to understand, tutorials! I purchased a home which has an excessive amount of dark wallpaper and I can't wait to brighten things up!!
Hi Kara
Great! Please let me know how you make out?
Russ
RussOlinatzPaintShow ok thanks I will!
Vielen Dank für Ihren netten Kommentar. Genießen Sie Ihr Wochenende!
Great :)
I like painting projects because I'm a Painter myself
Hi-
Yes, the trick is too use the back end of your taping blade and gouge into the surface a little bit, so the hole is now convcave and you can just simply skim over 2-3 times allowing for mud shrinkage. So always make an indentation first, then skim over it! I hope this Helps!
Russ
Hi-
What did you like about it?
Russ
Nice work..can u show how to patch that hole with the nail u took out. Whenever i patch them it always dries with a bump
@RussOlinatzPaintShow Hello, I was wondering how many coats of the Gardz sealer did you use? Thanks in advance.
Hi
I used 2 coats.
Russ
Thanks for answering so quickly. If you don't mind me asking. Were the two coats before you put the mud on. Because I just finished the other videos and saw on the last You put gardz sealer on after you finished the mud which would've made 3 coats?
I put it on before and after the mudding!
Thanks again your videos are awesome and beginners proof! Keep up the great work!
Leedydawn thanks a lot!
Awesome video Russ! Question... How come you don't tape the seams first? Aren't you concerned with cracks or does this not tend to happen? Thanks, I'm getting ready to start this project this week.
Erich Dobson
Hi Erich-
Thanks for your question. Wallpaper seams and drywall seams are to different things. Its important to go around with your knife and cut away any loose or peeling wallpaper seams. You could tape the seams but it will require more mud and feathering out. Don't just try to tape over a loose seam either, The air gap will still be there. Let me know how you make out?
Russ
RussOlinatzPaintShow Yeah one last question. Does Gardz work on top of BIN shellac primer?
Erich Dobson
That primer dries and cures really fast. I wouldn't use the Gardz on top of that.
Russ
Russ, can you explain why you do not tape & float, like I've seen before? I really appreciate your advice & help channel.
+lhdz00
Because you would see the texture of the tape under the paint. You can tape when you plaster, but not for painting. He's just filling in any holes and seams in the wallpaper before he paints so they're not visible when he paints the wall. Paint is thin, plaster is much thicker. You can see mistakes under paint quite easily while plaster can cover right over them

Thank you!
Does this work for wallpaper that has been removed but has the velvet/fuzzy backing of the adhesive? I ripped wallpaper off and it left the fuzzy adhesive behind and im having a terrible time using DIY wallpaper remover as its time consuming and tearing up the actual drywall behind it
Hi Shaun
Yes, you will have to seal it first and then skim coat the whole wall.
Russ
RussOlinatzPaintShow - okay thanks! Do you mean skim the whole wall with mud where the backing of the wallpaper is or just the section that i started to scrap the adhesive backing off the drywall?
Hi Shaun
Yes the whole wall to recreate a smooth surface.
Russ
I have textured paper ... if i put spoakle or mudd over the seams it will be super obvious .... what to do
Spray texture the seams and blend to existing texture

This is what I was looking for!!! Thanks! Is it necessary to use the guardz stuff over the wallpaper? Could you just use paint primer instead?
Cindy M.
Hi Cindy-
Thanks for your question! You either have to use an oil based primer or the guardz to seal in the glue on the wall. The Paints that have a primer in it are great but they're not suitable for going over wallpaper. After you seal the wall. Then it's ok to use. Paint /primer for your topcoat. Where are you from?
Russ
Ok...Thank you. I will get Guardz on there first. I'm from Kentucky.
Cindy M.
Hi Cindy-
Ok! Let me know how you make out?
Russ
RussOlinatzPaintShow Hi Russ, I have a problem....I have looked everywhere for the Gardz Problem Surface Area Sealant and cannot find it anywhere close to where I live. I did find something from Valspar that is a drywall sealant, however it is latex. And I also have Zinsser Bulls Eye Primer for all surfaces. Would either of these work? Do you have any idea's on what I could use?
Cindy M.
Hi Cindy.
No that won't seal in the glue. You can use an oil based primer!
Russ
You should use a Shellac based primer, not a water based, water based will loosen the wallpaper.
Have you ever used Zinsser Gardz?
♫ ♪ ♫ ♪♫ Thanks so much ♪ ♫ ♪♫ ♪
I've heard to not use water based primer as it might loosen adhesive under wallpaper.
Hi John
Yes you are right! Most water based primers won’t work here. This is a wallpaper primer/Sealer that is a liquid glue that drys fast and is designed to seal in glue.
Russ
Your welcome.

What about the raised up thing that covers the seams?
Hi Lucy
You have to cut those out. Anything that is loose.
Russ
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow they're not loose, but l'm wanting to paint and paper and they are in all rooms. So the seams your papering had those covered things on top of them? I can do this. Appreciate the help.
Yes can you send me Photo?

can you skim coat plaster over wallpaper
Hi Mario
Yes, just make sure to prime the wall first so the mud will stick to the wall. Where you from?

would pva and water work?
+Will Wilson
Hi Will-
No, Use either the Gardz or Oil based primer
Russ

England.

Ok, not sure if they sell the zinsser Gardz there!
:-)
Gardz is for porous material, not vinyl.
what do you recommend for vinyl?
I was told you could paint over vinyl wall paper, with paint that has primer in it. No?
Hi Jody
No that's not true. Either use the Gardz or an oil based primer.
