In this video, I use the Ridgid Air Mover again to spped up the drying time of the All Purpose Joint compound. I then use my 4 inch taping blade to shave away any ridge lines in the mud and then skim the wallpaper seams a 3rd time using my 12 inch Marshaltown Trowel and Hawk.
I then demonstrate how I sand the edges of the seams flush, using a 3M sanding pad.

Wow, I'm an older guy, and man did I learn a lot! You've mastered your craft, and your teacher style is superb. I have to paint over border (I'll start with that), but then have textured wallpaper which may be a beast to tackle. Since we've put your house on the market, we've learned just how far out of the norm our tastes are and what we have to do to sell. Your teaching has given me the courage to tackle this job! Thanks so much for the excellent work and time invested in the videos!

    Brilliant! I
have a huge bathroom which was wallpapered over 15 years ago. I went online to research how to paint over the paper and this is by far the most detailed demonstration and best solution to being able to update this area. Thank you so much, and I have subscribed to your channel, Facebook, Pinterest, etc. :)

I am from Texas. I am so glad to have found a solution that does not require the oil based primer and paint. My bathroom is upstairs with one large window that is not designed to be opened and it would be awful to have to use oil based products. My husband and I are going to tackle this project by next week and I will send pictures as we progress. Here are a couple of questions I have for you if you wouldn't mind.
      1) How would you prep the corners of the walls where the seams of the wallpaper come together?
      2) Do you peel off any loose wallpaper edges or just paint over them with the Gardz?
Thanks so much for sharing your expertise :)

    Hi-
You can also use Oil Primer for doing this. I prefer Gardz because it cleans up with water and when you go to reprime the mud at the joints its makes the mud stronger by soaking in to the surface and then hardening up. They both smell bad though. I hopr this helps!

RussOlinatzPaintShow Hi Russ. Looks like just one layer to me. I am thinking the problem with removing this old stuff is due to the fact that it was pasted directly onto sheetrock that was never primed? Some of it peels off easily, but for the most part trying too hard just does damage to the wall. But now I am wondering if I shouldn't give up removing it. Thanks again!

If you want to paint over it then you will first have to seal it with Gardz Primer. Then you will have to skim coat the wall with joint compound to recreate a smooth surface over the fuzzy paper texture that you will have once you seal it.

    Hi Russ,
What if the wallpaper border is peeling near the top of the wall and bottom of the border? I peeled back a small section and the border (which has sculptured bottom edge) and it left part of the paper on the wall (fuzzy middle of paper). Also, when they put the border up on top of the main wallpaper, the glue ran and has yellowed over time. Do I removed the border or try to cut out the peeling parts (which would be a huge amount of work considering the size of my family room)?
Thanks for the great video series, it has given me a good feeling about fixing these walls!!!
    Connie & Dave Navarre
P.S. The entire room is wood paneling with wallpaper bottom one pattern, chair rail, then sort of plain wallpaper with the scalloped edge top border.

Hi Russ, my paper is fairly neutral in color but it has a fine embossed moire effect. I noticed in the first part that the paper you were working on had a fine texture too. When you skim the joints it smoothes the pattern. either side of the join. Does the paint fill out and smoothe the band of paper between the joins?
    Finished job looks great.

    • @russolinatz4920
      @russolinatz4920 Před 9 lety

      Hi Sandra-
If there is a heavy texture to the wallpaper, this method wouldn't be best. The paint should be used to create more texture by doing multiple coats especially over the joints where the mud or wall area is smooth. Have you started yet? It's hard for me to tell what kind of paper you have. Can you post a picture?
      Russ

    • @sandall100
      @sandall100 Před 9 lety

It is a fine texture. Probably a couple of coats of paint over the PVA undercoat would fill the grain. There is hardly any gap between the joins a hairline filler could hide the join but looking at the walls again after watching your video It might be better just to strip the walls after all, the job was done 19 years ago! It is a bedroom and in good clean condition .because it's regularly dusted and been wiped with a damp cloth a couple of times. It's neutral and I've never found another parer I would change it with.

So glad I watched this before starting. Did you do any texturing before painting? Is it recommended? I really don't want to have to spray texture in my fully furnished kitchen. :-/
    Thanks for the videos!

      Hi-
Thanks for your Nice comment! I really appreciate it! What do you mean by texturing?

I guess I'm asking if you're happy with the way the paint looks right on the wallpaper without any additional pre-texturing such as "orange peel", etc.

      Hi-
I roll with a 1/2 inch nap that creates its own slight texture. It sort of builds up the texture on top of the existing wallpaper texture. Once sealed, you can lightly skim the surface to even out any wallpaper texture. I don't do that in these videos, but it can be done!

How do you do corners? Do you use drywall tape?

    • @RussOlinatzPaintShow

      Hi Gail
No drywall tape. If the corners contain a loose seam, then cut away each edge then skim coat corner.

If the wallpaper has a slight texture to it, do you recommend doing this?

Can i paint over the second part of the wallpaper?? I peeled of the decorated part of the paper but what was left was a fuzzy paper that is very difficult to remove. Can i paint over it, or is it better to remove it all? Im in a hurry to paint

      Hi Myra-
It is better to remove it all. Does the fuzzy paper have a sponge like depth to it?
Also, when trying to remove the backing, Is it tearing off the face of the drywall?
