How to Cut Tenons with a Track Saw

- In this video, I demonstrate two methods of how to cut tenons without a table saw. A few months ago, I made a post to the Woodworking for Beginners Facebook group simply saying "The track saw makes the tablesaw obsolete - change my mind". The amount of uproar and misguided responses were proof enough to me that I needed to demonstrate the versatility of a track saw and guide rail.

Great video Ben. I think it takes a better a better understanding of the versatility like this for more traditional woodworkers to understand the value of a track saw. My cabinet saw makes a great place to set my coffee while i build case goods with my track saw.

Nice video - I do this with a circular saw and a speed square - much faster than repositioning the track every time, and still gives very good results! Although I don't use it for the shoulders, only the faces.

loved it! would be nice to see a 75 degree bevel cut using the board perpendicular to the bench (like you did here but cutting a bevel on 15 which would result in a 75 degree cut)… useful for a table top bevel cut!

Now the one guy was right: I’d love to see a box joint from a tracksaw. Probably much easier with a Festool router on the track, but seeing it done with only a tracksaw ould be very impressive. I kinda feel like cutting them on a tablesaw or moronic, but that’s just me I suppose.

Cutting tenons on a table saw is relatively straightforward and it's literally the same process I did here, you just need to build a jig that rides the fence for the cross cut section method, and a miter gauge/crosscut sled for the kerf cut method. Although kerf cutting can get tricky the longer the board is with a cross cut sled. Box joints can be cut on the table saw as well, but again requires a jig. There are really simple and basic sleds for this, @bentswoodworking has one on his channel. There are also manufactured box joint jigs, like the one Incra makes (or used to).
Right now I'm debating whether the next video will be dovetails or box joints - both are possible with a track saw. Using a track saw may not be the best tool to use for either of these joints, but I just want to show that the tool is versatile enough to do it for those that can only buy one tool at a time.
Sad to see you stop posting... You were well on your way to being an authoritative guide on maximizing festool systems. I still reference your videos. Do you still woodwork even though you're not posting?
Thanks, Matt. Glad you find them helpful. I do maybe one woodworking project a year 😆 made some center pieces for my wedding, otherwise no. I have been dabbling in metal work, but nothing substantial. Making motorcycle content is much more enjoyable for me!
What I don't see is the repeatability. What the TS does best is I can set it up and run through many pieces with the same exact settings. I have a track saw and table saw, and this is pretty darn awesome idea, but still will be using the table saw for tenons.
With a simple jig (also would need on for a table saw), you can achieve the same repeatability while cutting multiple tenons at once - not something achievable on a table saw unless you have a big jig. I feel that on a track saw it would be more manageable. However, to each their own. I simply want to show people that it's possible without a table saw. Appreciate the comment and watch!
