Scribbled Style Animation in After Effects | Tutorial

  • In this Video, I'll break down my process of applying a hand drawn, scribbled style to animations.
Drawing at least parts of it with a pencil on real paper makes the animation much more convincing.
So I scribbled short sequences of basic elements, like lines or circles, scanned them and created a Photoshop file out of each sequence. Each frame is placed on a separate layer.
I imported all sequences as comps - retain layer size.
First of all, I created a background paper texture and a scribbled texture, which I used to fill the face.
For both of them I created sequences of the same picture, but changed the position and rotation slightly every 4 frames.
The main animation is a simple path animation. I used "trim paths" and added roughen edges to make the clean line look more like a pencil stroke. Then I used a time expression to animate the evolution of that effect.
I used a wiggle expression to slightly change the position of the path every two frames.
On top of that, I used a Posterize time effect to change the framerate to 12 frames, as classic hand drawn animation is done with that frame rate.
Finally I added all the hand-drawn sequences to the main comp, set the mode to multiply and created a lot of details with them, like the explosion or even the eyes of the emoji.

Interesting to see your process from paper to after effects. Also, nice trick with roughen edges to create a more hand-drawn quality to the path. Thanks for sharing.

Hi! That’s great to hear! I think the best way is to use the shape as a luma matte for the texture. Like for the face in the tutorial, it would be a round shape.

Hi Manuel. Can you make a video on how to improve a whiteboard video with After Effects? (on a mp4 video after something like VideoScribe or Doodly outputs the video) Do you have ideas to make it more visually interesting and engaging (like adding movement or effects when the image is static?) Thank you!

Manuel does Motion I admit, it’s a request that would help me greatly, But I see a need that it can serve the whiteboard community as a whole. CZcams is demonetizating whiteboard videos because they are auto generated. It would help all of us with that issue plus improve the quality and enjoyment of our animations

    • @ManueldoesMotion

Hi! I can't really say why that happens... You could try to render it out in After Effects directly as a ProRes file or sth like that. Than add the move to the Media Encoder and turn it into whatever format you need.
