- In this after effects tutorial, I break down my process and methods for creating a hand-drawn style from vector elements. This tutorial is suitable for beginners - intermediate users. Please leave a comment if you'd like me to explain anything I skimmed over.
I'm uploading new motion design & animation tutorials every Thursday!

Out of curiosity. For the turbulent displace effect, why don't you simply use a time*4 expression on the Random Seed parameter? Surely that's a simpler option?
Was wondering the same thing. I usually do this kinda stuff with a random() expression. I guess there's a million ways to do this - curious to know why Ben chose that particular method.
:O Oh wow, yes. That is a better option, haha. I hadn't even considered using the random seed parameter. Thanks so much for sharing ! I will be definitely adding this method to my toolkit from now on.
You both just enlightened me to a better way, haha. There's definitely a million ways to do this in after effects, but those are awesome techniques that I hadn't considered. Not anymore though :D Thanks for commenting, these are great solutions.
@@BenMarriott Its better to use random() because the evolution wheel stop to produce effect around 90x+0
@@mrsam-interrogation Yeah, that´s something to consider if you are planning an animation that lasts for more than 20 seconds.
BEN!!! I have watched like 15 of your tutorials this week to help me finish an animation project and I just want to say thank you thank you thank youuuu. You are sooo good at explaining the thinking behind what you do and breaking down the AE interface which can be super scary and intimidating. You are amazing - honestly the best and most helpful AE tutorial channel I've come across!!! keep it up bro
Brilliant. Love that you understand the value of the fewest number of strokes to bring an idea to life.
This is exactly what I've been looking for. Guess I'll have to go learn After Effects... You're amazing! Thanks for providing so much along with the tutorials!
Ben, you probably won't read this, but I want to thank you for everything you do. For teaching us and for giving us the possibility to download the materials for free. Without you knowing it, you are helping people to fulfill their dream and live what they like, in situations and countries where life is very difficult.
That's so nice of you to say, thank you so much for the awesome comment! The pleasure is all mine :)
bro thank you for making these videos. every time I get into a convo with another illustrator/animator they seem to recommend you, and I tend to do the same!! keep it up.
My favorite tut of yours, Ben, because I love the hand-drawn style!!!
Thank you so much for the support, Tommy!! :)
This is my favourite After Effects tutorial ever! You made it so easy to follow and I found it so helpful that you explained what all the different adjustments and effects added to the animation - some tutorials just tell you what to do without explaining the mechanics behind it, and I never feel like I learn from those (and I very often end up making a mistake and finding it harder to follow). Love you and this video! I've just subscribed 😄
Exactly what I've been looking for for ages, perfectly explained! Brilliant
Thank you very much! 😍
I've only been studying for one year and I've always been fascinated by animation with this style. Thanks to you, I know how to do it!
With love from Russia!
Thank you a thousand times over, I use a variation of this technique all the time now, you’re the best!
I think I've watched this like 4 times. But it never gets boring. Thank you.
being enlightened every week by your high quality video tutorial
My whole summer will be animating drawings! Your tutorial is so helpful!
I've been dying to seek for this tutorial and now it's here! Thank you, Ben, this is a very newbie-friendly tutorial.
Thanks so much! So glad you enjoyed it. I'm trying to make the tutorials I would have loved when I first started so that is great to hear :D
fantastic!
that was really simple but the method and technique was awesome( I loved the idea to put all the effects into adjustment layer and use it in different compositions)
that's so useful, thanks!
Your tutorials are the absolute best out there. Big love from Perth!
Your tutorials are the best in the world
Thank you! That's so awesome of you to say :D
@@BenMarriott Its true you are fantástico!
YESSSS!! Thank you, Sir... this is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I was looking at your other grain videos (which are quite awesome too, btw) but this is the one! (for lines)

POSTERIZE TIME!!! Thank you!!! haha I was searching for that effect for the longest time. XD
Golden advice here. Very much appreciated!
Thanks, Ben! I'm really enjoying your channel/learning a lot.
Many thanks again for your tutorials and for attaching materials under the video! Thank you very much! I'm now listening to your course at the motion design school, but at my leisure, I do all sorts of small animations, and now I returned to this tutorial for the texture)) 😅 thanks) you are cool 😎
Thanks so much for this tutorial and After Effects template. You saved a lot of us hours of research! 😁
I love this one!
I already do something similar with turbulent displace, but i do like to make 3 keyframes then i loop it with a expression.
For my method i do it because i want to give the fill of only 3 random drawing looping, not infinite random drawings.
As a tradicional animator, this will look better (for me at least xD).
But im learnning a lot from you. Thank you so much for the video. Awesome work!
been looking for this for almost 1 year. thankss Ben

this tutorial very helpful and well-explained, thanks for sharing
Thank you so much for watching, my pleasure :)
The best day of the week for me is when you drop a new tutorial. Quick question, what differs a good texture vs bad texture
Thanks so much man! Hmm, that's very subjective. I consider bad texture, texture that's unconsidered. If it's distracting from the scene in any way, texture I think should be to add life, or style to an animation/design that would benefit from feeling more "hand crafted." Big grimmy textures slapped over a clean flat animation for no reason for me would be "bad." But it's hard to say. I like to have a reduced framerate and have the design and animation suit a textured look, so that way the whole scene works as a whole. But there's definitely no rules. There's been loads of times where I've added a texture thinking it's save an animation and then It just doesn't work for whatever reason and I have to go back and fix the foundations of a scene. That's a long answer, but in summary. Texture shouldn't be used a bandaid to fix a scene.
@@BenMarriott Thank you for the detailed response! Its great to hear your insight on things, it makes sense
best mograph channel in the game, imo.
Thanks a bunch, Eddie :)
I applied this to a map. It looks quite nice!
