I love TDK however TDK wasn't a comicbook movie really. just because it had batman in it doesn't automatically have it be assigned as a comic to live-action adaptation, it was an itteration. Probably the only good itteration of Batman for that matter, but nowhere near the original batman. Whilst Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies are actaul comics adaptations with certain liberties of their own taken.
The dark knight is awful. Soooo overrated Nolan junk. I don’t know what people saw in that movie. Now X-men and Spiderman were great. Before that you had Burton’s Batman movies which were WAY better than Nolan junk. And of course, Christopher Reeve Superman. I honestly think that TDK is the movie that killed the blockbuster in Hollywood
Alfred Molina was BRILLIANTLY CASTED as Doctor Octopus. The fighting of the duel identity and Personal struggle he (Parker) has was great and the realization that he can have a relationship and be a hero was great in the movie and gave it heart .
I have similar feeling to superhero movies that Ebert does-I hardly give them 10/10s but this is my favorite superhero movie for the same reasons presented here, thanks to this review!
I read somewhere that when the arms were welded into his spine it messed with the nerve ending charges that the spinal cord gives off. Possibly numbing pain Doc Oc may receive. Then again he does have a type of battle suit in the comics and cartoon series so.
X-Men 2? Why the hell does no one mention X2: X-Men United as one of the best comic book movies? Forget The Avengers. X2 is the best assembled superhero movie to date. Spider-Man 2 is still my own candidate for the greatest superhero movie of all time. There are so many great, precious moments in this film that gave Peter Parker / Spider-Man more humanity than most heroes in most action films. It was brilliant, how everything was taken away from Peter and then, he stands up and takes it all back... for his own reasons.
I wonder what Ebert would think of Greeb Goblin in No Way Home. Willem Dafoe cemented his legacy as one of the greatest Marvel villains in that movie... as I'm concerned
[After seeing Spider-Man Homecoming....] Friends: "Spider-Man Homecoming blows Spider-Man 2 out of the water!" Me: "Noooooo it does NOT! Admittedly, Spider-Man Homecoming is the best Spider-Man movie SINCE Spider-Man 2, BUT it's about as good as the 1st Spider-Man."
I agree with that only I think homecoming is as good as spider-man 3 which I think is as good as spider-man 1 but I have a particular affection for the third instalment so don’t mind me
Roeper was a good pick to take up the mantle of gene siskel. Not nearly as memorable as siskel but still very well spoken and to the point about his opinions.
I forgot.; What was the reson why Spider-Man couldn't shoot a web at Doc Ock during the bank, or, when he tries launching a web he couldn't do it while he was web-swinging, later on?
Best superhero movie ever. I know people will say The Dark Knight is the best, but I think we can at least agree that Spider-Man 2 is the best Marvel one.
Exactly. Films like The Dark Knight and The Avengers weren't out yet, so the standards were different. If this film came out sometime this year or last year, it probably wouldn't do as well as it did.
(4/22/22) I like superhero movies, but there's few that I "love." Because of this review, I saw Spiderman 2 when I was 19 for the first time in ages. Now I'm 23. For the same reasons, I agree with Roger Ebert- this is my favorite superhero movie of all time! (Next is Spider Man and The Dark Knight.) In fact, I went to a tech school for 5 months- I saw this 3 times while I was there because of how much I loved it then! (I still do, but I haven't seen it in a few years.)
Ya know, it's funny how it took Ebert 2 films to finally get the concept of Spider-Man; further proof that this man cannot accurately critique comic book films to save enough money for a cheeseburger! If he paid attention, Spidey has ALWAYS been a vulnerable character due to his ordinary problems. That's why the comic worked so well in the 60s--it was a character more people could relate to (unlike Batman or Superman).
what made spiderman 2 great was simply the one villain structure which allows the movie to develop the characters. the 3rd one ruined the whole by having like ten villains.

I agree with you, but remember what year the movie came out--2004. No Avenger lead-up movies and no Nolan Batman films. The only superhero movies it had to compete with were the first Superman film, the Tim Burton Batman films, and the first two X-men films. Most other super hero movies were complete garbage.
correct, massive flaw, Doc Ock was just a normal human with mechanical arms welded to his back, one punch from spider-man to the face would have ripped his jaw off dead
That Spider-Man 2 had more emotional characters than just Harvey Dent and Bruce. In spiders film, all of the characters express some kind of emotion, from Peter in hope, to Aunt May in forgiveness and redemption, Harry in terms of trying to let go of the past (at the end), MJ about hope and understanding. The Dark Knight is still an excellent film, but not as good as Spider-Man 2.
The only part of this movie that bothered me was how Doc Ock reasoned that he had to rob banks to buy the parts for a larger version of the machine... Why didn't he just steal the parts and cut out the middle man?
Sam Raimi found the right balance in this film. The humor, the drama and the action were all first rate and it packed a great emotional punch as well. It's a beautifully done film. The first one was really pretty good too but, I'm sorry, part 3 was just awful.

Yeah I actually like Batman Returns better than the 89 Batman, just because I like Tim Burton and they gave him more freedom in that movie. I also love Watchmen, Batman Begins, and X-Men First Class. Then I like, but not as much, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (which was the best Batman film until Begins), Spiderman 2, Iron Man one and two, Captain America and the Avengers.
@moviebuffreviews Dude, 'Batman: The Dark Knight' & 'Batman Begins' are what'll make Christopher Nolan a house-hold name in terms of the next generation, much like Tim Burton with 'Batman: 1989', 'Beetle-Juice' & a host of others.
I love the way he says villains like Joker and all will never be what makes the movie, they're aren't the most important thing - then like a year later, The Dark Knight comes out and the Joker pretty much makes that film what it is xD
thats pretty much excatly what i thought. if they saved venom for a later movie it would have been better. it still did not need a reboot though. ill watch the new spiderman but im sure sams will be better. i cant wait for the dkr though that one is going to rule.

Roger was dead on with Doc Ock here, easily one of the greatest villains in superhero film history (and probably across any film genre).

Alfred Molina was sensational
Unbelievable actor
Not just one of the best comic book movies, but one of the best movies period. Great screenplay, directing, acting, special effect, etc. 10 out of 10.
You can tell that something is profoundly wrong with Roger here in summer 2004 by the way he speaks and how he looks.
