I so hope you are right about that. Speaking as an Englishman who lives in Scotland, and as a guy who figured we have had quite enough domestic division to want to learn some lessons from Ukraine’s plight. It’s often hard to even start looking for the positives in situations like these, but they are there. And the potential for European and transatlantic unity, cooperation and solidarity of purpose, in the aftermath of this is something we need to make clear to our leaders that we’ll be expecting them to capitalise upon in the coming years. ✌️🇺🇦

    • @CharlieVane21
      @CharlieVane21 Před rokem

Or the opposite. Germany, and therefore the EU, had given Russia tacit approval to gobble Ukraine up. Cheap energy was worth far more to Germany than the liberty of the Ukrainian people. Britain wanted to aid Ukraine as early as 2014. Germany and the foreign office talked Cameron down. It was in the election of Johnson in 2019 that things began to change. Boris ignored his civil servants and the EU/Germany and was prepared to go full send on aid for Ukraine. Much to Germany's and the EU's annoyance. Once the history of events is written, the EU and Germany, in particular, won't come out in a positive light. The strain within the EU, especially between eastern members and Germany, will scar the landscape for a considerable time. Togetherness not so much.

    • @ashroskell
      @ashroskell Před rokem +2

@@CharlieVane21 : I think you are overlooking recent events in that analysis? Yes, there has been a lot of corruption in Germany (particularly with regard to the Nordstream deals) over the last 20 years. And as Mr Massaro reminds us, not all corruption is technically a crime. But none of the leading European powers come out of that well. Boris was lead by what his friends in America wanted from him, not any moral imperative. And the fact is that he has been pictured and videoed in as many prestigious events, looking all cozy with the Russian Oligarchs who donated to his campaigns, as Scholtz, Merkel, Macron, Berlusconi, etc, have. Ever heard the term, “Londongrad”?
What we’ve seen more recently, with the tank debacle being a perfect illustration of this, is America promising to, “compensate,” and protect certain European (especially German) business magnates and politicians with favourable terms over fuel and other trade dealings in the future, in return for Germany’s commitment to begin burning bridges with the current Russia.
It will have been pointed out to Scholtz that Ukraine’s victory in Crimea will result in the collapse of Russia’s current government, and much weaker Russia looking to reset its relationship with the west. That doesn’t necessarily mean that those pipelines will be abandoned; far from it. But it begs the question as to who will be deciding what trade terms are established with Moscow’s new regime? To the victor go the spoils. And if Ukraine defeats Russia with everyone’s help, excluding Germany, that will put them at the back of the cue when it comes to restructuring Russia’s future. It’s not inconceivable that Russia might (this is a big, “might”) become a democracy for the first time in its existence. If that were to happen, America, Ukraine and their NATO allies will be opening up offices all over Moscow and St Petersburg, rebuilding their political and trade infrastructure from the ground up, much like West Germany in the post war years; with gas and oil still being their main asset, ironically, now competing with their newest, biggest rival, Ukraine, who’s gas and oil reserves are believed to be huge and untapped (if you accept the reports from Shell, Exxon, BP, et al?) and Germany will want the lion’s share here too.
If we’re taking a realpolitik perspective, we’d all start by saying there are too many moving parts and variables to make any firm predictions. And, we’d have to add that Germany had some legit concerns (even if they were too slow in resolving them and too myopic to look at the bigger picture) about America’s future commitment to this war. And it was fair of them to want America to put its money where its mouth was. Well, they’ve done that now. And they’ve committed double the number of Abrams tanks that Germany was asking for. A powerful message.
The top leaders in Europe are coming around to the idea that Ukraine really can and will win this war. And what they’ll lose financially from one hand, they’ll get back in the other, so long as everyone marches in lockstep. So this commitment was Germany finally getting it and throwing in for the long haul.
I hasten to add that your concerns are very legit’ and worth keeping in mind, but they’re not the whole story; just one small part of it. With all those factors in mind, I think we have good reason to believe that, “this could be the start of a beautiful relationship,” but we’ll have to see. ✌️🇺🇦

Good questions on many subjects and Arthur had interesting answers.
Arthur: "I didn't know Russia sucks so bad"
I was surprised too. In hindsight I think the answer was right in front of our eyes. We all new that the Russian Kremlin was a corrupted organization. Instead of using the money to improve their weapons and investing in research, the money was funneled into the pockets of the dictator and his cronies. Their greed will be their own demise.
I would like to add that "control and ignorance" will also play a role in their defeat. In order to defraud their people, the Kremlin controlled the information to keep their population uneducated. You can see this concretely when you compare the demeanor between the Russians and Ukrainians. Ukrainians (soldiers and civilians) are so much more enlightened. They have a "twinkle" in their eyes that you will not see in Russians.
    Thank you for reading.

That line "I've been waiting for this since my grandfather died " is so accurate ! My own Polish grandfathers were prisoners of war, one spent 10 excruciating years in Siberia and only got out because stalin died . The motto was " One day those red devils will fall" ! I'm always thinking about them these days, and all of our ancestors who were annihilated by this horrific psychopathic horde . We were between two evils -hitler and stalin, but as one Polish official said back then : "When the Germans come, they take your land, when the russians come, they take your soul". A hundred years later it still applies.
Btw. we Poles are very similar to the Ukrainians emotionally - when the war started I quit using capital letters for these names , and then as I began to watch Ukrainian blogs, I noticed they were all doing that .

To the best of my memory, here's how I recall it.
My mother in law escaped the war in Poland when she was 6 years old. Her father stayed behind to join the Freedom Fighters. They took a boat to Halifax Canada. They then took a train to Toronto or Ottawa. The train ride was 3 days long in the winter. People were looking at the scenery outside their window and saw trees and snow resembling their own country. Apparently, people in the train were starting to panic because there was a rumor that they had been fooled and the train was actually taking them to Siberia.
For some reason, this story has always stuck with me.

And the fighting that followed was like when someone applies to a bank for a large business loan. Ukraine had to prove it that barely needed the loan (by defeating Russian troops in battle) before the banks were willing to lend, realising the risk was so low that their money would not be wasted.

I brought this up over a year ago now. But with the supplies going to Ukraine I think it might be an even better idea logistically.
I wish there was more interchangeability between parts for all of NATO.
If you look at ammo like the 5.56 or the 120 tank round you'll see serious advantages when it comes to logistics. What if there was a requirement for mounting hardware being identical on all tanks that use the same fuel. Obviously you wouldn't be able to drop an Abrams motor into a Challenger. But going forward if every diesel motor from a wheeled NATO vehicle could be swapped into any other NATO diesel wheeled motor vehicle it could make things a lot easier and cheaper with logistics and the ability to supply different countries like the current situation in Ukraine with be markedly easier.
Or turret size. For example if the turret from a Bradley could drop into a Stryker or a Finnish Patria AMV or a Canadian LAV or British Ares because they were all made to the same specifications then it would be easier for nations to order exactly what they want for specific ancestors but also you could see situations where one nation donates the motor and transmission, another nation donates the chassis and another nation donates the turret. And the receiver can just put them together and go

Also don't see alot people complaining about French stuff. I mean been huge increase in orders for Caesar's and Rafael etc. France behind USA and Russia is the largest exporter of arms by 2x over Germany.
So I mean think might slightly have misrepresented current European defence.
Also France exports more arms than china by 2x give you the scale we talking.
Also Frances state owned weapons maker (one of the few left in the world) recently bought kmw the maker of the leopard 2.
So France now owns / has control of the maker of the leopard 2 and has set up an sub company to avoid German export laws.
So lots stuff happening behind the scenes.

Putler's plan which he had clearly stated many times was:---take Kyiv in 3 days, the rest of Ukraine in 2 weeks, and in another two weeks his army could be in Berlin and Paris!--This would would have been a slam dunk as there were not enough NATO troops to prevent such a move at that time-----And, after having captured Ukraine in such a short time period, and with the threat of turning off Europe's gas and Nuclear scare tactic, Putler, (along with his Trojan Horses and collaborators) could have taken Europe probably without a fight!
It was Ukraine that refused to join RuZZia and fought to remain free that foiled this plan!

Supposedly there is huge number of these in Europe allready and they could be transferred and applied within a month or so. He even says they are NOT complicated for the operator and not a subject of concern with regards to the russians to copy or steal classified technology. In other words M1Abrams could be applied immediately and make a huge difference. Sounds suspicious to me. czcams.com/video/BT08QT1Jc08/video.html&ab_channel=MSNBC

I'm going point out that, contrary to what Arthur said (and implied) about the US supplying military kit in a timely fashion and with sufficient quantities/resources, the US (along with Germany) were the last ones to offer modern western battle tanks - only agreeing to it after Germany insisted as a condition to supplying Leopards - and have not, so far, even mentioned the supply of aircraft, while Poland, France and the Netherlands have. Indeed, in addition to tanks, countries like Poland have already supplied aircraft by the back door as - ahem - spare parts (that still fly and come in a package that looks remarkably like a complete military aircraft).
And while Challenger 2 and Leopard 2 will be in Ukraine next month, US tanks are unlikely to arrive in the next six months and possibly not before the end of the year. Let's face it Artur, at the moment the tanks that the US is supplying don't yet even exist. They won't be supplied from US stocks. They'll be built to order. The factory hasn't even *started* work on this yet. And when they do come, currently the US plans to supply 31 such tanks out of 8,000 in the US inventory. That's a little less than 0.4% of the US tanks available. Compare that with the UK that is supplying just of 6% of its entire fleet of main battle tanks right now, with other countries making similarly large commitments. If the US matched the UK in percentage terms this would be 480 tanks, not 31. Based upon population it would be 73 tanks instead of 31. And they'd be coming now, not at the end of the year.
The main US worry is with logistics and maintenance of the Abrams and even they say the requirements for both would be way in excess of the Leopards. Which directly implies they'd be less reliable than the Leopards without this outsized maintenance and logistics support. Not to mention training. It's all very well for Artur to talk about "reliability" when the US is concerned about training in order to ensure that the Ukrainians don't break stuff on Abrams tanks: like blowing the engine. Similarly, we have no idea what they've done with some of the equipment that they've been provided with and whether they've adhered to the maintenance/training or not. Some of the faults in the field, regardless of source of supply, will be due to abuse in the field as well as any quality issues that may've cropped up. This happens in all wars to all military hardware. That's just the way it is.
No matter how excellent the M1A1 and M1A2 are when functional and properly supplied/maintained - and these tanks are, no doubt at all - they're not here yet (and won't be for a long time) and won't be reliable unless a whole mountain of support, training and logistics is put into place. Parts, so the Americans tell us, will be a real issue for the Abrams, since the logistics pipeline (including holding stocks in the right place) will take quite a while to set up. In other words, if the US supplied these tanks immediately, they'd more than likely end up broken down on the side of the road (or in a field somewhere) after some time in the field. That makes them neither more/less reliable or better/worse quality than anything else that's been supplied from Europe or elsewhere.
Furthermore, the UK (along with the US) has been training the Ukrainian army since 2014/15. And even prior to the war had provided the Anglo/Swedish NLAW anti-tank weapon system that proved extremely effective, along with US Stingers and Javelin. The main training program for Ukrainian troops abroad is led by the British. And the British were the first to contribute modern western main battle tanks. So Artur can't honestly tell the British with a straight face that they didn't step up in time or in sufficient quantity. Particularly when Ukraine itself points to the UK (after Poland), along with the United States, as being the most instrumental allies. Even if the smaller Baltic states - who have been top notch in their support - have contributed more as a percentage of GDP. The UK, however, is on a par with the US on that front: both come in at about 0.25%.
All of the European countries that are in a position to provide modern weapon systems have provided very effective weapon systems along with the United States and of similar quality/effectiveness. My understanding is that the French Caesar artillery is first rate and, like HIMARS, the Ukrainians that operate these are big fans. While some German artillery has suffered problems (requiring remedial work before return to service), other systems have performed excellently and reliably across the board: IRIS-T, Gepard AA tanks, Nasams and so forth.
Artur's contribution here can be summed up as "US military hardware is better, reliable and delivered on time while European hardware is crap, unreliable and delivered late". There's a gaping hole in this: reality and objective facts tell us otherwise. It's all well and good to act like a brainless fanboy, Artur, but you do have to keep your (military) boots on the ground as well as your eyes and ears open. The United States is doing a huge amount (with over 42 billion dollars spent) versus the EU's 53 billion dollars (including national contributions of EU members) which doesn't even include the UK's contribution to this. All are doing their part: money, financing and modern, high-quality arms as well as ex-Soviet stock. Over the next year Europe is likely to exceed US production of 155mm ammunition for Ukraine (since it has a higher capacity to supply it). Both Europe and the US will have to buy additional ammunition from South Korea, Australia and elsewhere to keep up with demand.
Oh, and Artur: Rheinmetall produces some great products, but it is *FAR* from the largest military supplier in Europe. Not even remotely close to that. BAE Systems, Dassault, Saab, ThyssenKrupp, Thales, Safran, Leonardo, Rolls-Royce, Fincantieri are all out in front of Rheinmetall - as is Airbus, if you wish to include it in this list.
I really value Artur's contributions in this conflict on CZcams - he's right on the mark in so many ways and it's a real shame to feel that I have to take him to task. But with regard to the above, he was well off the mark in this video. To the extent that he very visibly stepped off into fantasy land for a little while while expressing his bubbling and breathless enthusiasm for all things American. However detached from reality, stupid and annoying some of that was.
