In the eastern Donbas, Russian troops continue to advance. In the south, by contrast, their grip appears shakier. The Guardian's Luke Harding visits the city of Mykolaiv where he meets determined Ukrainians.

Just remember that Himars launchers are in short numbers. As such , Himars are used for strikes on ammo and fuel dumps and air bases. They would need hundreds of Himars launchers in order to bombard the Russian troops on the front line before an Ukrainian offensive. They are worth their weight in gold, but 12-20 Himars launchers will not win the war.

If Kiev had of implemented the Minsk accords this war would never have happened. But America didn't want that and France and Germany didn't have the guts to stand against it. Russia's not going to mount a winter offensive. They don't have to.
They'll just work on making themselves more secure and comfortable where they are. Come spring they'll have a much easier time advancing westward.

In the second extract, Filatyev expresses his anger over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
I fought in Ukraine, and if I don’t have the right to say “No to war” why does someone else have the right to start the war? I cannot bring our army back home, but I can share my experience and my thoughts about participation in this war and encourage fellow citizens to take care of their country, which has so many problems of its own to deal with.
This is a vicious circle of some kind, we are all to blame, but we need to make the right conclusions and correct our mistakes. Where is the breadth of the Russian soul? Where did our nobility and spirituality disappear? … Our ancestors shed so much of their own blood for the sake of freedom. It may not change anything, but I refuse to take part in this madness. Ethically, it would be easier if Ukraine attacked us, but the truth is that we invaded Ukraine and the Ukrainians did not invite us.
