This is the inside story of Street Art - a brutal and revealing account of what happens when fame, money and vandalism collide. Exit Through the Gift Shop follows an eccentric shop-keeper turned amateur film-maker as he attempts to capture many of the world's most infamous vandals on camera, only to have a British stencil artist named Banksy turn the camcorder back on its owner with wildly unexpected results.
One of the most provocative films about art ever made, Exit Through the Gift Shop is a fascinating study of low-level criminality, comradeship and incompetence. By turns shocking, hilarious and absurd, this is an enthralling modern-day fairytale... with bolt cutters. - Zábava
I never understood how Banksy has stayed anonymous. It's just insane.
+Spiderman Prehaps that's it's too keep the identity of the artist real. The point of him is he's anonymous; almost like he's speaking everyone's minds.
Yasmin Gill right, but usually one person on the inside has a little bit too big of a mouth to keep such a secret
+Spiderman I agree, how does he do that? Is he like a ghost wandering the streets?
Alexandre Wouâtzephoque he just has a trusted network of people who stay loyal to him and help him conceal his identity
+Spiderman how can u use "just" in that sentence lol :P
I was totally obsessed with this movie when it came out when I was in college. I started making stencils, doing street art, doing my own version of this stuff. It was so much fun.
Haha snap bro 😎
you either die a hero (thierry guetta) or you live long enough to see yourself become the villian (mr. brainwash).
Eric Carnivele TRUE
one of the best documentary films ever to be created. we are all bloody crazy. this proves it. well done banksy, always making lemonade out of lemons you are a true inspiration.
I love the idea of Banksy.
+Celi Méndez I love that we all can visualize him in our own way...at least with what he looks like, what his life was like growing up and what his story is, etc..it's better this way. I don't want him to identify himself
Banksy idea is true. Very very good film/document
and we must have in memory- "the streets is our!" Every night ;)
Banksy is a team 😜😳🥳🤔
It seems like the more and more I ponder what this movie / documentary was really about, it becomes more and more apparent that Thierry's alter ego perfectly fits him; Mr. Brainwash. He found a way to stalk a bunch of street artists for just long enough, to be able to copy their styles using art that wasn't even his to begin with, and then use hype that they built up for him to cash out on an artform that he took no part in until he realized that he could sell out using his connections with people in high places.
It's kind of despicable, but somehow he got away with it. Just goes to show more than anything, that in life, it's not about what you know, it's about who you know. If you can trick a bunch of people into thinking that your work has value, it might as well be made out of solid fucking diamonds.
He turned his back on the artists who stuck their necks out for him when they finally asked him for a favor (making the documentary), then he fucked that up, and then proceeded to give the task to Banksy, all the while he was copying his style and his reputation, using gimmick art stolen straight out of a picture book and using photoshop to make it "his own".
It's ironic, because the entire reason why Banksy wanted him to make the documentary in the first place was to show the world what street art was all about, and how it wasn't supposed to be about the money, but about the message and the expression behind it. As soon as he bailed on it and made Banksy do it, he made sure the world knew the exact opposite: that "street art", or whatever abomination he created out of it, can be commercialized by pretentious collector douchebags and sold for millions. It kind of lost the entire thing they set out to accomplish in the first place. It's not exactly "street art" if you're stealing it from someone else, photoshopping it, and then printing them out in mass and selling them in a rented out warehouse.
Thierry isn't an artist, he's a businessman, plain and simple. He found a way to make rich "art" collectors pay him ridiculous prices for essentially ripping off a style of art created by a movement that he didn't even really partake in, other than essentially being the waterboy for the real players.
But even in the end, Banksy said it himself, that he didn't exactly play by the rules, but then again, there weren't supposed to be any rules in the first place. You can't exactly be mad at him for wanting to make money, but he did it at the cost of the integrity of the entire artform and the movement itself. Just like everything else in the world (including CZcams), once something gets big enough, corperations and greed will find a way to infest it and morph it into a product where in the beginning it was just something that people were doing for fun.
Wow, yes. I just finished this film for the first time and when it got to the part where Thierry decided to become "'mr. Brainwash" I literally rolled my eyes. BUT as I watched the rest of the film I realized how PERFECT the name fit him. Those silly little goons who poured in to praise his copy cat art were, in fact, brainwashed.
+MAVERICK™ See when I saw the film (a long time ago now) I thought it was ridiculous that the artist became the filmmaker and the filmmaker the artist. It just seemed too fabricated. I wouldn't be surprised if Banksy created Mr. Brainwash himself just to mess with people. Even the commentary guy sounds like he's taking the mick haha.
+MAVERICK™ Great comment. I agree. Thing is, he might have some cool ideas but he doesn't have the artistic talent to make whatever his imagination came up with. Sometimes I have amazing ideas for paintings but I suck at painting and wish that someone can duplicate it on a canvas. Yet, I also would love to take painting and art classes but that requires some investment in time and money.
Yeah, but for the most part it isn't. We will never know to what extent Banksy, Shepard and others contributed to the big Mr. Brainwash debut, but beyond that it's pretty clear that the story was told as is.

I still love the incompetent "cops" chasing the guy at the intro and having him get away. It evokes such a wonderful feeling of FUCK YOU.
+Pablo Sergio Rivera That is the best part of the film. The song that plays when it happens is perfect too.
+Pablo Sergio Rivera It is not the cops fault to lack basic parkour knowledge...
*PARKOUR*
Pablo Sergio Rivera he almost caught him lmao. these cops walk around in dress shoes of course they get fucked
I just watched the full documentary without knowing very well what it was about and I got my mind blown away...
I didn't know until today the names Banksy or MBW, so the full journey the movie proposes is the travel I took. I didn't even see were it was going.
I just love what the film says about art, art world and today's society.
Really really genius work! Thanks for making it!
This is basically my favourite doco. Must watch formall artists☺
Thank you Banksy for drawing attention to Ukraine and the war with russia. For us ukrainians, this is very important and we are grateful to you!
I love your drawings and the meaning you put into them (if the meaning is really there, I believe it is).❤
After all these years, i just realized that this movie is a irony of Thierry. Clever Banksy
poor vincent. you probably don’t play chess either?
@@honeysuckle9951 actually I don't..
I think it’s great you admit that you didn’t understand the film the first time - it‘s brave and you obviously are self-aware. most people would never have admitted to it. I didn’t want to be mean to you - I just wonder sometimes if Thierry ever realised this as well....?
@@honeysuckle9951 well thank you.. and about that, how if Thierry realized this but he wanted to keep the movie going? He wanted the exposure. He wanted the hate and criticism in order to get the chance for a rebirth as a brand new artist (which he did now with 1m followers on ig and a verified page also). Idk man maybe he didn't realize it at the first place but now he surely did. Bad exposure is a good exposure, the only bad exposure is no exposure at all. Correct me if I'm wrong tho🥴
Awesome movie and honestly, respect
one of the best things about banksy being unknown is that he is everywhere and nowhere. his art is inspiring
Back when I was more into the visual stuff creatively, I fostered some of what is now his technique while working side by side with an ex gf of mine. But, this would certainly be my approach more or less if I were to get back into it😆
Banksy is the best artist ever most of his art works talks about politics and life and slavery its talking things about art should be talking about Banksy is a fantastic man he helps people delivering his artwork to the public making the streets his special canvas... Good man can't wait to meet him at the metro centre in apple shop on 9 o'clock.....
Much love holding it down full color in NM, thanks for putting in work and inspiring so many others
Love, love, LOVE Banksy! I've been to Bristol many times and have seen his work all over the city. The man is a GENIUS.
This guy is like a super-hero in the real world or something like that?
Banksy's puts a smile on my face so good luck to him.
Wish I had one of his works.
Same - that stall that popped up as a one off went 4 hours without selling a thing. Talk about not being in the right place at the right time. Gutted.
I hope we never find out who he is. It's what makes his work so poignant. If he had 'identity' the same as the rest of us do -it would undermine his work. Long live Banksy
This movie was not exactly what I expected, but I really enjoyed it. It is definitely one I will watch again.
"Making money is art, and working is art and good business is the best art." --Andy Warhol.
Banksy i love your art especially "There is Always Hope Balloon Girl"
Oh how we all love to fan girl over the wonderful mysterious Banksy😘
No, but seriously I love him, he truly is a modern innovator and creative original with a very intelligent outlook on our society. Watched this film and it's great even if it left me with a feeling of disdain for mr. Thierry and our society's obsession with anything seen as hip or artsy
He's a killer.
Fuck banksy
Exciting video, very interesting. Thanks. Street Art
So good! best documentary I have seen in a long, long time
I've seen the movie now, and it's an absolutely fascinating and hilarious film that has amazing art footage, and blows the lid off a vapid art scene. At the end, you laugh to keep from crying and never figure out who the whole joke is on (it could be everyone). Worth seeing, worth owning.
Brilliant! a true Artist!
I went to London and got to see some of his work in person (I actually spent an entire weekend on my "Banksy Expedition" - I had 2 typed pages of street addresses and locations where his work can be seen) and truly is amazing.
I was in high school when this came out and watched it at that time!! Memories..
Lol Banksy. The god of every middle school anarchist / Deviantart revolutionary. I remember the first time I had a thought too.
And those times are long gone. This is art and it's here to stay, doesn't matter what you think about it. Would you rather have a Banksy's piece on a billboard or another McDonald's ad?
LOVE BANKSY!!! thank you for all, especially to be an inspiration in the lectures. i and students love banksy
This is one of my favorite movies about street art.
3:35 made me laugh out loud !!! hahahahah
Wonderful movie. Love Banksy's graffiti artworks. I really like the title- kinda reminds me of how art can be turned commercial, you know, like when in museums after enjoying the art you have to go through the gift shop to get out. Sad but true.
P.S. I reckon Roger Waters would love this- perhaps he does. :v
The full version of this documentary is awesome!
I just watched this movie and was blown away.
Amazing story and you can't make this stuff up, it's too crazy...
loves it.
Woah
I can confirm, Tyler Oakley loves it

You're so sophisticated and discriminating
@hard mode Exactly.
Awesome! Great Work!! Way to shake things up and get some people thinking!!!
I watch that Movie tonight in my hometown in a small Cinema.
Im so exited
why the hell is the focus of this film not on actual street artists, and instead on the French man? this Thierry Guetta fella sure as hell isn't a filmmaker... is he even an artist? seems to me like his museum works weren't even mostly done by him as seen in the scene where he hires 'prop builders' to make the work. plus his art isn't even as detailed as most of the other street art that we've seen in the film. this is puzzling me to no end.
Ruzz45 That's something I found confusing about the documentary. It's like, Tierry / MBW was always just the guy on the sidelines filming the artists who had a real passion for what they were doing, and then all of the sudden once Banksy and his crew realized that they could sell out and make tons of money through their art shows, they asked him to make the documentary to try to show the world what street art is really about: self expression, sending a message, turning an otherwise blank and boring world into a work of art, like it should be.
He went and fucked that up with his retarded movie, and then left it all on Banksy to make the movie himself. Then while Banksy was doing that, all of the sudden he just randomly turned into the biggest sellout artist of all time himself? I didn't even think he really made art. Didn't he hire a ton of people to make most of this shit up for him? I hardly consider taking someone else's artwork and then photo-shopping colors onto it and blasting it with spray paint qualifies as "art", or at least his own original work.
It seems like Tierry just took advantage of a scene that he really had no part in other than being an outside observer, and then found a way to cash in on it by stealing others art, making completely unoriginal pieces, and using his connections to hype it up higher than any of them could have expected. By the end of the documentary he seemed really full of himself. Banksy said that there weren't supposed to be any rules, but you can tell by one of his last lines where he said, "I mean I used to always encourage everyone to do art. I don't do that so much anymore."
It kind of ruined the entire point of what street art was supposed to be, did it not? You could contribute part of that to Banksy himself, but he only really did it for the recognition, keeping his identity a secret the entire time. He left it up to MBW to show the world what it was all really about, and all he did was turn his back on it and make it mainstream.
its cuz he was a witness of all these peoples work and had hours of film of it, he deserved some credit
I never heard about banksy until it popped up on the news recently. To be honest he couldn't have been that famous. Besides its not the person that's famous, its the name, he's a massive nobody when he's walking down the street going to the shop or whatever, how shit is that? if i did something like that, id want people to know it was me and not hide away cos i think its cool and mysterious because it isn't. whats so good about spray painting some stencil cut outs?
He doesn't do it for fame.
so that was a good guy, not this fame bitches who do stupid stuff just for fame
you know the word individuality... everybody is different so shut up
Banksy does that because he doesn't want to go to jail. It is illegal to violate the streets but people still do it for the thrill. Its not all about fame kid, or about being cool and mysterious... Its about leaving messages around the world. Banksy sure doesn't want his name to be famous but he can't stop what already happened. And i would like to see you use stencils the way Banksy does it AROUND THE WORLD.
well the illegal part is one thing. The other is that if you'd know the guy, you wouldnt see his art (if you consider it to be art, like i do) in the same way. Your understanding of it would subconsciously be influenced. If I was banksy, that would be my reason to be "mysterious". He brings up social issues through his art and he sure has important messages that ppl should hear and know about. Hope that helps ya ;)
That I would called "two faces standart". Why art maybe illegal? Banksy do the art in the streets, not something bad, nor some words withought sense or scrawl. Someone in England even try to sell a wall with Banksy "illegal" art. Wasn't that not right?
i been looking for this video!!!
Not much to say about this movie; simply one of the best movies this year!
I still think Banksy is a girl...
That would be amazing. They distorted Banksy's voice but I think he's a man.
