It has been about 10 years since I did this, but I got an original Remington and disassembled it and measured everything and compared it to an Uberti and to a Pietta. I expected it to be closer to the Uberti, but it wasn't. It was much closer to the Pietta.
I prefer Pietta Remingtons. They are closer in size to the originals. But for Colt replicas I prefer Uberti. That said both brands are well made and I own some of each brand in both Remington and Colt configurations.
No Remington's don't suck caps. I think the cap jams this time were because I was using a couple of extra cylinders that were a little short for these guns. I didn't have any cap issues on the cylinders that came with the guns. I'm really glad you like the channel. Thanks.
For last 2 months i have been watch bp videos and just got my 1858 today. Thanks for all the info that you have given me, shot 20 rounds using your loading technique clear to pusing in the caps. I had no trouble Being a beginner your videos got me thru it. Thanks
I use a mix of 2/3 lambs tallow to 1/3 beeswax. You need wax in your lube to raise the melting point. half and half olive oil to bees wax works well to. Just don't use Crisco. It builds sludge in the fouling.
Thank you Mike, you are the most professional, educational, and fun video producer on CZcams. I appreciate the hard work you put into your series of videos.
I can't believe I missed one of your black powder videos! I was reviewing to get some info I needed and saw this one and was like "??? Where'd that come from?" I really enjoy your BP Revolver and BP Cartridge videos. Keep up the good work.
The purpose of the wad or of greasing the chamber mouth is the same, to get lube into the fouling to keep it soft, which helps a lot in maintaining accuracy if you are planning to shoot more than 10 rounds. If your lube runs on hot days, you are using the wrong lube
I am so glad you have posted these videos I am jus getting into black powder revolver an I always come to ur page for advice you deserve a 10-10 my friend
With the 5" barrel version, I have less leverage to load with, so I like the .451 ball and .450 conical (both cast from Lee molds). I get shavings from both. I also load rather light, 20 grains. Great video, as always!
Excellent video Mike! The Pietta factory are making some fine products. The LEE Conicals did well. It would have been interesting to see my 240 grain conical shooting from that Pietta NMA Remington. Yesterday I shot a Florida Wild Boar from my Uberti NMA Remington it dropped quickly with one shot of my 240 grain Kaido Conical going right through the impressive animal.
I have enjoyed this review. I have been shooting blackpowder percussion pistols since 1978, usually Colts or Colt replicas. I respect your views they are authoratative and from my experience professional in your field. Without exception I learn some from your sage advice.I am currently getting ready to get a 1858 Remington, probably Uberti. Best wishes and keep that Evil Roy under control.
Mike, Like to say I very much appreciate your video on the Remington revolver. For some of us just learning black powder, it's great to have someone with a knowledge base to share this information of CZcams. I would be curious to see you do a review in the future of Chiappa's 3 barrel shotgun, something that borders on steampunk. Thanks!
they each have their upsides. You can get shell ejectors for Remington conversions as well (if the gun comes as a conversion, it'll have one, if you convert it yourself, say with a Kurst, they make modified cylinder pins for that, that have the ejector attached) Aside from a stuck hand screw, my Pettia NMA has been pretty good, though, I've yet to go shooting it.
Hello Mike, Great review! Any chance of you doing a video on how to tune up the Remington action like you did on the 1851 Colt revolvers? I used your video to tune my Colt revolvers and the difference is really noticeable. Thanks for making the videos, my friends and I share them all the time. Looking forward to the next installment on your Bucks County build. Take care, Mark
Hi Mike, poor Roy !!!!! Moi aussi je tire avec des Rem///Pietta, mais ils sont Targets !!!! J'ai toujours beaucoup de plaisir à voir vos video!!!! Have a nice day. JEAN PIERRE
hi mike , just wanted to say thank you .for all the work you put into making these videos esp on the pietta remington, cleaning /striping down, wad making , have you done one on home casting ?? and yup i bought pietta remington in stainless
Hi Mike, again a very nice video, I really enjoyed watching it! I noticed the better quality of the video, do you have a new camera or is it just something in my eyes?
I just recently got one of these and shot it for the first time today with cap and ball and using the 45lc conversion cylinder. Both shot almost identical as far as accuracy. I got to say I'm in love with this pistol tons of fun to shoot and the history behind it makes it that much better..what distance do you topically shoot from to maintain a group like that.I was shooting from 20yards and my grouping was not bad bit nothing like you have for sure .nice work.
Hi duelist, I recently watched your vid on the conversion cylinders for the new army. After reading some of the comments I was a little confused on what can be shot safetly through this revolver. Is factory .45lc ok to shoot, or should only "cowboy action" loads be used?
I've noticed you've pretty much switched to felt wads exclusively lately... do you find the reduced mess vs. grease worth the trouble and expense of wads?
Conical bullets don't require a felt wad, like round balls. But round balls don't necessarily either. You can put the power in, seat the round ball directly over the power, then grease over the ball. Conicals, unlike round balls, expand in the gun and grip the riflings, which is why they're also more accurate.
Any chance of a similar vid comparing the accuracy of Lee conicals vs round balls in a .36 Uberti Remington Navy ? I've heard conicals are more accurate than balls in .44, less so in .36.
What do you think of Pietta pistols? Cabelas has a sale on them and I was thinking of buying either a .44 or a .36 caliber and a starter kit. What's your opinion and advice?
Do the Remingtons "pull caps" the way the Colt's do? Do you typically perform the JB-Weld mod to the hammer of a Remington or is it already flat? Thanks for these great videos. You've become my favorite CZcams channel. And that's really saying something considering I also subscribe to Hickok45!
hello duelist1954, i reviewed your last youtube video on the 1858 remington new army carbine rifle, can you please tell me what size of cap number to use? i tried winchester mag no 11 and had to many mis fires. so do you advise to use remington cap no 10 ? will these work, in your video when u capped the rifle you didnt say what sized caps you are using. please advise, GREAT videos for new black powder users. thanks steve
Hi...great video thnx. I need to ask so I'll understand clearly, with the conical you don't use a wad...or any lube. With the conicals, is there a significant risk reduction from chain fire event? Thanks in advance, this is important to me.
I am thinking about getting one a new model army, however, I don't know which barrel length to get. I know the 8" barrel is historically accurate but it seems unwieldy and muzzle heavy. On the other hand the 5.5" looks better but isn't historically accurate. What do you think? (Btw great video and I am ordering a calendar too).
Hello Mike, I hope you are doing well after the accident. Quick question - is there any difference between the .44 balls used for Colt and Remington (I believe both are .454) but Uberti has 2 different set of molds for Remington and Colt so except marketing name is there any other difference or I can safely go and buy my self a Lee Precision molds in .454 and use them both for my New Model Army and 1851 Navy (in .44) ? Thanks in advance.
You mentioned in another video that in order to shoot a colt 1860 army with conical bullets (the ones made to replicate the 1860’s originals) you had to cut metal away from the frame so the bullets fit under the loading lever. Is that true with Remington new model army revolvers?
I would really like to order the conical moles do you have a part number please also can I buy these premade Any box numbers would be appreciated thank you very much
With the base pin retention, would it be more effective to carry spare cylinders with you and when you run out, release the empty cylinder, toss in a new one and set the pin again?
I wish he'd weigh in on this question. That's one of the ideas that I had that made me want one of these. Carrying a pair of extra cylinders like speed loaders.
duelist1954 Thanks sir, Maybe I've been over lubing my loads. Also, I just purchased a conversion cylinder for my Uberti New Model Army. Could the Lee conicals be loaded into .45LC brass? It would be great to use that bullet for both functions.
threepdr1 They can, but I'm not sure that they will be a great choice in that application because they actually have a heeled base to allow them to start in the cap & ball chamber.
I read that 40 grs of 777 with a 140 gr round ball, will produce approx 1100 fps, and about a 440 ft lbs of energy out of an 8 inch barrel. This would put the rem 1858 about on par for ft lbs with a 125gr .357 magnum round out of a 3 inch barrel. Now does that sound right to all of you?
Irene Kirk 777 as well as Black MZ compress well so I wouldn’t doubt that you could fit 40gr with a round ball of either powder. I don’t have a chronograph or 777 but I do have Black MZ and it is noticeable a hotter powder.
hi mr b the Remington pietta your are shooting is it the oversized frame gun or is it the close to original frame size I recently bought a euroarms model Rem new army which to me is almost flimsy compare to my rogers and spencer also by euroarms
I find that Remington #10s fit the cones on my guns the best. Remington #10 and #11 are the same diameter, but #10 has a longer skirt so it holds tighter on the cones, but if I don't have #10, I'll use #11. CCI caps are totally different dimensionally than Remington. I find CCI #11 to be too loose on my Guns and #10s are too tight.
duelist1954 Is this the right mold ( #90382 Lee Double Cavity Black Powder 44 Cal Rem Bullet Mold 450-200-1R) ? And is this the right round ball mold (90442 Lee Double Cavity Black Powder Round Ball Mold .454) ? I'm really liking your Rem bulldog series. Thank You
+duelist1954 hey what is it that causes the remingtons to explode of.you can completely fill up the chambers? i have seen videos of blown up 1858 remingtons
Hey bud, I fired my first black powder cartridges the other day in my Ruger (Colt knock off) and I am addicted to it! Im firing .45 LC who do you suggest I purchase the blackpowder ammo from? (im not a reloader and I prefer the most high power and realistic to the time period stuff) Also what or who do you suggest for cleaning? Thanks bud.
Hi Duelist1954, I've owned a 1858 long barrel I picked up used over a year ago and shot it 48 times in one day... Just picked up the 5" Barrel yesterday both Piettas. Cabella's recommended .451 caliber lead balls in the book and I ordered 200 of them because the original kit I got with the long barrel was all used up. You say .454 will that 3,000 of an inch effect it or make it unsafe to operate? Also would love to see you do a Spiller and Burr Revolver some time, thinking that's next for me
If he used the felt wads for the Conicals he could get 35 grains of black powder in the chamber, wads aren't really needed but are more of a precaution for chain fire and possibly clean fouling, I have shot cap and ball without wads and lube and haven't had a chain fire, but fouling builds up quick! So lube your balls! Lol

I prefer Pietta Remingtons
The cartridge conversion cylinders are built to handle any standard pressure factory made cartridge.
The gun's chambers are .450", hence the .451' ball recommendation, but chambers can vary, that's why most of us feel safer with .454" balls

Remarkable shooting. For an antique! Glad I just ordered my rem 58 in stainless steel.
Ringin' steel every time with those conicals. Like music to the ears.
I am so glad you have posted these videos I am jus getting into black powder revolver an I always come to ur page for advice you deserve a 10-10 my friend
Thanks Mike, Great shooting....this is why I own 5 of them.
Yeah. It was the standard round ball load for this gun.
Your videos are nice, thanks Mike
nice groups Mike! gun shows amazing accuracy.
Also, I have a series on B-P cleaning on the channel...it is on black powder cartridge guns though.

Super vidéo, je possede un remington 1858 pietta, et je l'adore.
Hello Mike,

hi mike , just wanted to say thank you .for all the work you put into making these videos esp on the pietta remington, cleaning /striping down, wad making , have you done one on home casting ??
and yup i bought pietta remington in stainless
where do i get one of those way cool badges?
The chambers of the pietta Remington holds around 47-48 grains of black powder
Hi Mike, again a very nice video, I really enjoyed watching it! I noticed the better quality of the video, do you have a new camera or is it just something in my eyes?
Piettas are good guns.

Any chance of a similar vid comparing the accuracy of Lee conicals vs round balls in a .36 Uberti Remington Navy ? I've heard conicals are more accurate than balls in .44, less so in .36.
That .44 caliber ball sure makes the steel ring loud! Is there a reason you don't use your felt-things with the conical bullets?
is it normal to have slight movement from the cylinder in these Remingtons ? with hammer down and in full cocked position.
can you use hodgdon 777 33gr. muzzleloading easy clean propellant pellets in a black powder pistol?
Hi.
Is the conical bullet used in the "old West"?
_Andrea_
Yes
What do you think of Pietta pistols? Cabelas has a sale on them and I was thinking of buying either a .44 or a .36 caliber and a starter kit. What's your opinion and advice?
how did it blow up? was it because of a chainfire or because too much black powder??
Do the Remingtons "pull caps" the way the Colt's do? Do you typically perform the JB-Weld mod to the hammer of a Remington or is it already flat? Thanks for these great videos. You've become my favorite CZcams channel. And that's really saying something considering I also subscribe to Hickok45!
So, with conicals you don't have to use the yellow/orange wad that round balls require?
I've got one that will be out in a week or so.
hello duelist1954,
i reviewed your last youtube video on the 1858 remington new army carbine rifle, can you please tell me what size of cap number to use? i tried winchester mag no 11 and had to many mis fires.
so do you advise to use remington cap no 10 ? will these work, in your video when u capped the rifle you didnt say what sized caps you are using.
please advise, GREAT videos for new black powder users. thanks steve
my dad wont let me do black powder revolvers he said may be one of the conversions do you think the remington would be a good revolver to start
How is the pietta Remington in comparison to the uberti Remington?
Great video tutorial i have a question does more powder equals more power or less?
More...up to a point.
now i see the ejection rods for colts now its a hard choice i like colts and i like remingtons dont know what to choose
Hi...great video thnx. I need to ask so I'll understand clearly, with the conical you don't use a wad...or any lube. With the conicals, is there a significant risk reduction from chain fire event? Thanks in advance, this is important to me.
Lube or wads are not what stops chainfires. A tight fitting ball or bullet does that. Conicals are lubed in their lube grooves.
I make my own, so they cost about the same as greasing the chambers. If I run out of wads I grease.
Clear full
Does the Pietta New Model Army need to be modified to shoot Lee conicals? Do both 200 and 220 grain Lee conicals work?
Mark Phillips No. yes, they both work, but the 220 grain is actually too wide, so it is pretty hard to load.
Mark Philip I’d recommend the 8 inch barrel. They balance very well.
@@duelist1954 Alright, thank you!
35 grs is the maximum charge?
one more question pietta or uberti
Hello Mike,
I hope you are doing well after the accident.
Yes. They all use the same balls
+duelist1954 Thank you very much Sir. Get well soon. One question more - can I support your channel via patreon, paypal or any other mean?
What is the purpose of the wad. I never use wads and only use grease over the ball when it's cool enough that it won't run.
Do you lube your black powder conicals with your homemade lube and how do you lube them if you do? By hand, pan lube or lubesizer?
LesR(swordman50) I take a chunk of lube and rub it over the lube groves on the conical
No. You put lube right on the conical bullets.
What is a good lube to use on hot days?
You mentioned in another video that in order to shoot a colt 1860 army with conical bullets (the ones made to replicate the 1860’s originals) you had to cut metal away from the frame so the bullets fit under the loading lever. Is that true with Remington new model army revolvers?
Glrk10 no. most Reningtons have enough room, but you need an Uberti rammer, or you will damage the bullet nose.
I would really like to order the conical moles do you have a part number please also can I buy these premade Any box numbers would be appreciated thank you very much
Where did you get your Evil Roy steel target and how is it made would like to have one for shooting my new model army revolver at?
www.letargets.com/content/at-202-evil-roy-target.asp
duelist1954
Thank you
I want to get into black powder revolvers what would you recommend for a beginner?
Jeremy Lamano I recommend you get a steel framed, .36 caliber, 1851 Colt Navy
With the base pin retention, would it be more effective to carry spare cylinders with you and when you run out, release the empty cylinder, toss in a new one and set the pin again?
I wish he'd weigh in on this question.
That's one of the ideas that I had that made me want one of these.
Carrying a pair of extra cylinders like speed loaders.
I think Jerry Miculek used that trick once.
I was wrong. It was Cisco.
czcams.com/video/7SODMSbV7Fs/video.html
It's not as easy as Eastwood made it look in Pale Rider. It takes some practice to be fast.
It is fun to shoot, but I don't see a big market for it.
I noticed that you don't mention lubing the bullets. Do you not lube, or did you just skip that step? If you do, what lube do you prefer? Thanks
Look at 8:45. I use lubed felt wads under the ball
duelist1954 Thanks sir, Maybe I've been over lubing my loads.
👍
How does the Remington compare to Colt as regards “cap sucking” and cap jams?
Tony Camaro because the hammer goes through a narrow slot in the frame, cap sucking is rarely a problem
Would 35 grains have been a typical load back in the day with an original revolver ? I'm guessing it would have been but not sure.

I'm with you. Load 5 stay alive!
Or load six and stay alive. That’s what the safety notches are for. No difference in safety. Personal preference.

You say .454 will that 3,000 of an inch effect it or make it unsafe to operate? Also would love to see you do a Spiller and Burr Revolver some time, thinking that's next for me
Remington Rider Revolver , on youtube
So the lube on the conicals is enough to prevent chain fire...
I believe he mentioned on another video that chainfire is more often caused by loose or missing caps.
The lubed felt is just to keep the fouling soft and minimize corrosion.
Lol
Does it matter how you load a black powder revolver?
Wow! The chambers end up being full of gun powder?
Awesome I got one damn thing ways 2 pounds don't know when I'll go shooting
oh and will 38 special fire out of a 38 long colt
Salut Mike sais-tu que ton nom est français et qu'il veut dire Joli petit taureau. Beli =belle = beau = beautifull...and veau it's a little cow
Uberti's are closer to oiginals, Piettas are oversized. I believe you may have confused them.
