- In this video I'll give the Pietta 1861 Navy revolver a real work out. I'll shoot it with round balls, with Kaido Ojama's conicals and with John Gurnee's historically correct paper cartridges. Kaido's email is kaido93@hotmail.com, and you can contact John Gurnee at john.gurnee@yahoo.com

I agree. The 1861 was the prettiest of the percussion Colts.
Thanks for sharing Mike. My very first hangun hen I was a very young lad was a CVA 1861 Navy 36 cal. Oddly these CVAs were like .380" diameter bores and I used Lee conical molded projectiles. Brings back memories!
I always look forward to your shooting videos. It looks like Duelist's Den has turned out to be a smart investment. Keep 'em coming!
Enjoyed this immensely. Thanks.
One of your best videos yet.
I think the peace and quite are doing you good.
Mike, it's really good to see you back at it on CZcams. I really enjoy your videos and definitely learned quite a bit from them. Keep it up!
Its great to have you back. I missed you, I ok forward to more videos
VERY great video! Lots of good information also. Really like your Den.
Thank you for sharing, looks like quite a versatile little sidearm.
Amazing! In under 20 minutes you answered several of my BP revolver questions! Thanks again for an excellent video that was both educational and entertaining. Keep 'em coming!
GoodStuff! Gonna get my 1861 out soon now, thanks bigguy...
You are a excellent teacher!!! Good job safety first!!! Love your videos!!!
Excellent video. Great, shooting , and educational 😊Thank you, Mike.
I bought molds from Kaido Ojamaa a few days ago, and now awaiting delivery. I appreciate the tvideo of different loads Mike.
Mike love your channel very much yours is the best on u tube ! In this video I could not se half your shooting threw the smoke ! Thanks Shane
This is a great video! and a nice gun!
Mike you have too much fun. Thanks for the video. :)
Mike, I love the videos. Love em. I also want to thank you for turning me on to the Slick Shot loading extension. It works great. I thank you and look forward to more of your videos.
Glad I could help.
Great video Mike, cat wat for your nextone.
Funny, I was just watching some of your old ones last night.
I went back and saw the two caps dropping. You’re good with that pistol.
The 'last gun Colt designed'. Right! It seems the 'Pocket Navy' was a repackaged popular '51 Navy' style by the Colt Company after Colts death! The first revealing of this ...Pocket Model of Navy Size Calibre... was 1863.
Some modern authors stated it not out until 1865!
Not one cap jam! All your hard work on this gun over the winter paid off
Great Video! It's nice to have a place to shoot where you can use some reactive targets.
That is some great shootin' Mike!
Great shooting.
Dude, you're awesome.
Darn good shooting! Nice pistol too. I'm gonna have to go out tomorrow and shoot now dang you!
Excellent video! Really enjoyed the shooting. Those Kaido bullets really group tight. Looks like they were really smacking the targets much harder than the rest of the projectiles tested. Would like to know how fast they were going,
The Kaido bullet in the 1861 with Triple 7 of Swiss should boost it up to a level suitable for white tail and hogs where it is legal to use a 36 cal percussion revolver. The 44 cal versions have proven devastating on 200lb + hogs on the last several hunting trips that Kaido has joined our hunting party, heck he out killed us all and harvested 2 wild boars and one was a wee bit over 250lbs dropping it with a single shot! The Kaido bullets hit harder than any other projectile made for these percussion revolvers and are very accurate. Great shooting Mike keep those videos coming!
Great video mike
Great shooting !
Nice shooting in that last string of bottles. and shaving cream.
Damn... Ol boy can shoot. Respect
You just do what you do.
I get tired of all the criticism on all the media pages. Wether be CZcams or Facebook. Folks such as yourself put things on here to help & or show others what things are all about - how to - so on.
Most folks now have to down grade everyone for some unknown reason.
Thanks again !!
Now I'm gonna have go out an shoot my police model this weekend & we just had 2-3 inches of snow last nite.
You know, it doesn't get said much, but you're a heckuva shot, sir
Very cool video. Thanks for the information. Bought this gun for my dad for Father’s Day 2019 we’ll see how it shoots. I’ve never used a black powder or ball and cap gun
Good advise DO NOT get in a gun fight with this gentleman. Even if he is only armed with a .36 caliber 1861 Navy.
Great shooting Mike, I wish I could get mine to shoot like that..
Good video! Thumbs up~John
great video! I noticed the grips seem more true to the original ( no typical Pietta tail as the 1851's have )
Outstanding job Mike! You make the viewer feel they are right there your guest at the Duelist Den by your creative videography.
Really nice out there. I like the different seasons in God's country. Many do not realize the beauty of the North East Forrest Woods. Awesome. This is uplifting to watch and I sincerely hope that your hard work motivates viewers to get out to a range and try a Percussion Cap and Ball Revolver!
I am very pleased with the performance of my 140 grain Universal Bullets in 36 caliber, I do have Two Cavity bullet casting molds in it, that are available for those who seek to obtain and cast their own.
As well as a newer 145 grain 380 diameter custom 6 cavity mold.
One thing I would say is that Pietta 1861 Navy is an awesome piece of machinery, there sure have come along way! I would just suggest to all using this and other Colt's as you have done before to Deepening the Rear Hammer Sight with Rotary Tool and or Pyramid/ Triangle Shaped File and have a competent BP Gunsmith such as (Dykes Reber of the Muzzleloading Shop in Little Rock AR) mount a Dovetail Higher Front sight Like the Uberti Remington sight or other on the barrel to shoot as close as point of aim as possible.
I have purchased 2 of those fine 1861 Navy's from Dixie Gun Works, and I did have Uberti Remington front sights dovetailed in on both of them by Master Black Powder Gunsmith Dykes Reber of the muzzleloadershop.com in Berryville Ark.
Thank You Very Much for your deeply thought out hard work. Indeed Combustible Paper Cartridges (CPC) were the most efficient "Best" Practical system around before the metallic cartridge! Please keep up the good work keep em coming!
I'm a fan of your bullet designs. Before I new anything about your bullets, I designed bullets in my head that is almost exactly the same design you use in the bullets Mike shot in this video. The only difference is mine are a little lighter for a given caliber. I'd like to order some moulds one day. I just started moulding so I'm still learning.
I just got one in stainless...beautiful
I think that pistol is pretty much a one kind of bullet gun. The Kaido bullet is all i would shoot out of it. Thats some very good accuracy. Nice shootin.
That last brylcream desperado almost got to you!
I just got one and man, I got to say, I really like it. I may like it better than my 1851.
Mike, I think that one can of shaving creme was out to get you!
Looks like the Duelist Den is going to host some really good videos. Keep 'em coming.
Nice single hand shooting, Mike ! I don't think people realize how difficult that is with these guns. Love my '61 Uberti but I must say my '62 police is really becoming my favorite of the 36's...
I want one now, but not with the 8” barrel. I love the paper cartridges. Got to get that set up.
I have a 7.5" barrel on the 1851 Navy, and I really like it. It looks cool and feels good.
Your cast conicals took out the shaving cream cans almost as spectacularly as my pointed nosed makarov rounds.
Lesser /evilist roy rings nicely. And burma did not know they sell reactive targets. Niche demograph sales are up this month for them. Fun.
I hope some movie producer puts you in the movies. I'm sure the westerns will come back. Your videos are excellent, Mike.
Good shooting!
nice shooting
Pretty cool for a old man 😎
What?! Evil Roy scurries off with his nads intact? Say it ain't so Mike.
Great video Mike. BTW, it looks like you've lost weight. You look good sir.
That dog has some bark to it!
Fun video!
Hickok 45 couldn't have done it better.
Thamks for the video.
John Davis jax fl
really wish they made a 5 1/2 barrel sherrifs model of the 1861 navy that would be a sweet shooting gun..great video...safe journeys
blackoracle69 A little high, but nice: www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=487253755
thanks i will give it a look
Take a chance on me, but you did pretty well on those one liters. I believe you should try getting them faster, then faster, turn it into a challenge.
Well Mike, you've done it again -- another great video! If I ever get half that good, I'll call myself "good." Both my BP guns (I only own two, due more to poverty than lack of desire) and both shoot high and to the left. It hadn't occurred to me (duh!) to file the rear sight groove. Can anything be done to move sighting to the right, short of good ol' "Kentucky windage?"
Thank you!
Seth Tyrssen Good Luck.
nice
Mike, I've always wondered if it would be possibly to design some sort of "muzzle break" for bp revolvers or even rifles that would focus, redirect, or somehow assist in quickly dissipating the smoke. Rifled smoke outlets? Lol.
I have a Pietta navy in 44 caliber. Yours shoots straighter than mine. My revolver shoots low left. Nice shooting on your part. Thanks for the video.
Does it show low left do to right hand shooter’s anticipation?
I meant “shoot”
Love black powder and shaving cream in the morning!!!! Thanks
You are something else with that one hand shooting , I have two 1861 colts never fired loaded but I am to crippled up to take them to the range .
Is that a Stetson Open Road hat? It is awesome.
Tsk tsk, Mike loaded six for the spinners lol ...!!
Hi Mike, thanks for the excellent video on the 1861.
What is the range distance are you shooting?
Regards,
Richard
:D nice revolver Mike i like the Colt 1861 Navy .36 Caliber Percussion Single-Action Revolver i hope someday i can buy one i got a question which do you prefer Uberti or Pietta but i like both of them :D
Huzzah!
Very good shooting sir!
l just love those modern bullets. Do they come in .44 caliber?
John Koeberlein yes its called the 1860 army
Mike, what's the triggers pull weight? great vid!
Hey Mike, how about a video comparing shooting a revolver, like a 3rd Dragoon or 1860 Army with and without a detachable shoulder stock?
I’ll add it to the list.
I could use a test from a longer distance to see what the effective range is))
Hey Mike, Great videos. Very informative. How can I get hold of Kaido conicals for my 1861 uberti .36 caliber. I would like to order some
facebook.com/kaido.ojamaa
I would like to know to all I can find is the molds not the conicals
duelist1954 Ok, that's the type of gun U really need to twirl before holstering.
Regarding the loading only five for safety, in that you are pretty much immediately firing after loading, wouldn t it be more than reasonably safe to load all six? Loading and leaving for a time where the chance of it getting bumped around, yes. I only load five. Through bad experience I have learned to do this. Anyway, so what do you think? Or is it that you just wish to maintain a firm impression that safety in this manner must be consistant even in , , any situation. I ve noticed in another video you loaded a five shot pocket model with all chambers. Citing convenience. Anyway, seems safety can be preserved with the consideration of particular variables.
Mike are you casting those Kaido bullets? If you are are you using pure lead? Great shoot'in by the way.
I didn't cast these, Kaido did. They are pure lead.
Mike an honest question. Why are you using .380 round balls. Most of the pietia I've owned have liked. 375 round ball.
Nice shooting. To get that on POA will you adjust the load, or file down the rear notch?
Gun Sense (drmaudio) Deeping Widening the Hammer sight(pyramid shaped file/rotary tool) and as well as mounting a Higher Front Sight will help with POA.
Gun Sense (drmaudio) I'll file down the rear sight
duelist1954 Thanks
Putting the hammer on the caps gave me anxiety
Hello Mister Beliveau you equipped your uberti on 1862 police of fireplace SLIX SHOT as on your other models? I possess one of these copies and it is true that the incidents of shooting(firing) are many because of the capsules which fall in the mechanism. Here in France we do not find the product SLIX SHOT and I shall like having your opinion before placing my order in the United States. Your video on the Colt Navy on 1861 in summer a pleasure has to view, very beautiful weapon that this one. By thanking you in advance Mr Beliveau.
modelmaker78 I don't think Slix Shot makes the correct size for the 1862 Police revolver. I'd recommend Treso nipples
duelist1954Thank you for your answer Sir. I am going to get these myself. All the best.
Do you ever use Cream of Wheat or any other type of Filler?
archersfriend Adding Fillers to Powder charges such as Cream Of Wheat is a 20th Century Replica Shooters Invention. Percussion Revolvers were Never meant to be fired with any filler as they were the Real Deal in the 19th century, that required the most power generated to be able to stop man or beast quickly which they usually did. Using a filler lessens the power factor of the load. As they were the Glock's of their time and lives depended on the Percussion Revolvers Special Hot Pistol Powders were developed just for them in the mid 1850's. When I shoot or hunt with my Percussion revolvers, I never have used any Filler added to the powder nor shall I.
Would you happen to know where to get percussion caps?
Dont know why, but when i saw this video i thinked of this:
"There is iron in your words of death for all Comanche to see and so there is iron in your words of life. No signed paper can hold the iron. It must come from men. The words of Ten Bears carries the same iron of life and death. It is good that warriors such as we meet in the struggle of life... or death. It shall be life."
You know the movie?
One of my favorites...The outlaw Josie Wales
@@duelist1954 Its a very good movie, and one of my favorites!
What was the powder charge in the paper cartridges?
So why cant i use the safety notch? Seems kinda ironic.
You can! I posted a question response to the author a few moments ago. check it.
OK Mike, how do you get the bad guys veiw???
Where do I get an original conical mold for paper cartridges?
why wont pushing on the caps with the dowel set off the cap?
There s a slight chance it could happen. Afterall, it is pressure activated ignition. Haven t heard of it happening , , y e t . All agree that using the proper size cap to cone (nipple) is the best way. I actually shape the cone by grinding/finishing for the proper fit to either 10/11 caps.
Another way people seat caps is to use the pistols hammer to press them firmly in place. Now t h i s is dangerous. Because while positioning the cone under the hammer etc, the hammer could slip from the persons grip and strike the cap.
How is the balance of the 1861 navy compare to the 1851 navy? Still trying to decide between the two.
Mark Allen except for looks, they are exactly the same
Hi Mike! I am a 1954 like you, lol! Mike I am a total noob & I have a noob question. Why would you choose Pietta when Uberti seems to be of higher quality? Thanks very much. I think I would like a Remington clone. New Model Army in a “Sheriff’s” configuration. I can’t hold a lot of weight.....Arthur (Itis) pays me frequent visits, 😑 Thanks again! I love your channel!
Pietta quality has improved quite a bit over the years. That said, I mostly buy Uberti made cap & ball guns, but some models are only made by Pietta, and I buy other Piettas for comparison purposes.
Mike: As a Texan I just had to order a Pietta Dance Bros. .44 from Dixie and it is on the way. Any chance for a review one of these days? I don't think any Texan can stop themselves from buying this replica. I stopped shooting years ago because I have no place to go but am actively looking for a relaxed environment to shoot. The frame is apparently incorrect (I think it was a necessary call to not butcher a replica dragoon frame) but still better than a $75,000.00 commitment for an original. Still looks quite nice in the pics.
I also have one on the way from Dixie, so you will be seeing it eventually
+duelist1954 Yee-haw! :-)
+duelist1954 What would be awesome would be to compare it side by side to the Dragoon from which it was based.
Are the Pietta Colt 1861 Navy and 1860 Army more reliable than the Pietta Colt 1851 Navy? As in does the hammer snatch caps off of nipples, or does the loading lever fall off the barrel from recoil any less?
Mike, is it possible to load up paper cartridges using the Kaido’s? I’m thinking being able to prepare them in a controlled environment would make them even more consistent.
Sure!
how can it be the london model 1861 if the London factory closed in 1856? I do prefer the steel blued backstrap myself.
Hi mike, will kaido bullets fit in a remington beals navy?
***** Yes
Dear Mike:
I like the performance you are getting with Kaido's conical bullets, but have noticed that Big Lube bullets has moulds that cast 210 grains for .44's, and I think 150 GRAINS for 36's with of course, their generous sized lube grooves which should be useful in matches by allowing longer shooting strings before cleaning because of the large loads of lube they carry compared to Kaido's bullets. This large load of lube should allow very long shooting strings if the bullets are sized and lubed with SPG or a like back powder lube; a shooter might be able to shoot an entire match without cleaning between stages. I hope, I hope, I hope. What is your opinion of these Big Lube Conicals for .36 and .44 percussion revolvers used in CASS events? I know that Kaido designed his moulds to produce accurate bullets for hunting and target work, but will they carry enough lube to allow a whole day's shooting before clean-up? I value and seek your input, I'V'E USED THE .45/250GR BIG LUBE BULLET IN CARTRIDGE COMPETITION AND HAVE FOUND THAT EVEN WITH THE HOLY BLACK THAT I CAN SHOOT AN ENTIRE MATCH WITHOUT HAVING TO STOP AND CLEAN MY REVOLVERS, OR WITH THE ..44/200 IN MY 44/40 RIFLE AS WELL. DO YOU THINK THAT THESE BIG LUBE BULLETS WILL DO AS WELL IN PERCUSSION REVOLVERS? Sorry about the upper case type, I didn't notice it until there was too much written to correct easily. Let me know what you think about those Big Lube bullets in Percussion revolvers used in match shooting please.
Donald Denison I use big lube bullets in black powder cartridges, but they would be very difficult to load in cap and ball revolvers because they don’t have a rebated heel. I haven’t shot extended strings with Kaido’s bullets without cleaning, so I don’t know if you could get through a match.
Big lube offers at least 3 bullets with rebated heels meant for cap and ball. I just checked, the .36 offering is only 90 grains, but is still heavier than a round ball and would it seems, be more effective on reactive targets. The .44 caliber designed for the Ruger Old Army has a second rebate designed for Italian replicas nominally in .44 Caliber that weighs 210 grains. I had given up on .36 cap and ball due to the lack of energy on reactive targets; maybe that 90 grain bullet will have enough power to take down those targets. That bullet designed for the ROA and Italian .44 REPLICAS LOOKS GOOD FOR SASS MATCHES AND LOOKS LIKE FROM THE DRAWINGS TO HAVE THE LARGE AND DEEP GREASE GROOVES THAT WORK SO WELL IN THE .45/250 CARTRIDGE BULLET THAT I HAVE USED SUCCESSFULLY. I THINK I WILL BUY BOTH THESE MOULDS, IT WOULD BE GOOD TO BE ABLE TO USE THE .36'S IN MATCHS HAVING REACTIVE TARGETS AGAIN. THAT 210 grain.44 bullet should give the 44 cap and ball revolvers real power and long shooting strings without cleaning. If you try Kaito's bullets for long strings of shooting, please report on the performance on You Tube. I'll try to get you a report on the Cap and Ball Big Lube bullets after shooting them .
Go for it then.
Thanks. I will, I'll offer a report on what I find
question, does Kaido Ojama' sell molds or do you know what bullet mold he uses?
His molds are custom made to his specifications by Lee Precision
Why do you prefer goex over pyrodex? Just for the sake of being period correct or is it really better? I have been using pyrodex P and haven't tried goex yet.
southerncountryboy8 Pyrodex is harder to ignite than real black powder and the fouling is even more corrosive.
I have one more question. Sorry for the bombardment. I'm shooting 15 grains of pyrodex P and using Remington #10s. Yet, when I shoot my 51 navy, the caps split and "flower petal" making the action hard to cycle. It's not cap sucking, nothing is being dropped into the action. Rather they are hanging half on the nipple as the cylinder tries to rotate. How do I fix this? Get slix shots? Is this just a normal occurrence? Is the pyrodex load too hot and splitting the naps badly? Thanks again for all the help.
southerncountryboy8 That is pretty normal
Do you like the 1861 over the .36 1851 navy?
Personally, I prefer the 1851 based purely on aesthetics
+duelist1954 I can't figure out which one I like better
