  • Yossi Sheriff, AKBAN Academy founder, explains the importance of levels of violence concept to the applicability of mature martial art.
Part of the syllabus of the 15th week of the training year
    www.akban.org/...
Levels of violence, (L.O.V), (רמת אלימות) is a quantitative scale of violence used in the Methodical pyramid, the methodology of the AKBAN. This quantitative scale depicts the possible damage that a technique, a weapon, or a physical aggressive engagement, can cause.
What decides the level of violence are a conglomerate of factors that hinge on these main points:
    * Total amount of destructive energy released - a kick to stomach (higher L.O.V) versus a punch to stomach (lower L.O.V), a gun (low L.O.V) versus a bomb (higher L.O.V).
    * Vulnerability of the target areas. On micro level - eye (high L.O.V) versus leg muscles (lower L.O.V) . On macro level - agricultural field as target (lower L.O.V) versus a school (higher L.O.V).

Great stuff. This video is important for us practitioners because regulating emotions is a valuable skill.
If we just react (vs. Respond) we could easily escalate the level of violence for something minor. It displays our current state of mind.
    Again, thank you Shihan Sheriff.

Very wise man!! This is what I teach my students in defensive knife...only use what you need to use to save yourself, or defend no need to go beyond unless required. Always forgive your enemy and let him make the choice to escalate, Your conscience is clean, your spirit with God is clean, and you are justified in your actions.

Great explanation of deescalation of violence. It seen like a direct response to the BJJ and MMA videos that say Ninjutsu is worthless in a fight. These martial arts only offer escalation of violence. For a policeman, bouncer, or anyone in a modern society, having techniques to control the level of violence is essential. I think in the United States, the problem with our police is they don't know how to deescalate confrontational situations. Instead of learning MMA choking techniques they should be learning more advanced martial arts like Ninjutsu and how to deescalate physical confrontations.

That's not right in the slightest. Emotional regulation isn't an issue with a system, it's an issue with the person. BJJ is probably the nicest martial art because there is always a position to allow an aggressor to give up. Hell if anything, choking someone is probably one of the nicest ways to subdue them without leaving too much damage because they go limp. It takes someone who is in control to know when to stop the fight and that comes down to the individual, not their techniques. And the kicker is that BJJ teaches you when enough is enough. MMA can be a bit too rowdy because they attract the dude bros, but the dude bros are the same guys who think everything that isn't hardcore sucks. But I digress, the reason people tend to say ninjutsu is worthless is because we rarely see the techniques apply even in the street. I haven't see someone get punched in the throat and give up, that's not to say it can't happen, but the likelihood of it is low because we see what tends to happen in fights. It's mainly about what is demonstrable to the world. That's how we know most knife defense tutorials suck, the person explaining how to defend against a knife doesn't think like a criminal, so we get bogus positioning in the demo.

Now THIS is true self defense! To many systems teach "self defense" as if they are on some battlefield without any legal repercussions for what they do to there attacker. In many ways I would not only call it a mature system, but a MODERN system than acknowledges the realities of the society that we live in.
There is no point in preventing a guy from punching you in the nose if doing so lands you in prison for 5 years.

would most people in that situation with the adrenaline flowing be able to respond either violently or technically. Motor coordination and rational thought go out the window.
Would someone not battle hardened even be able to do what was required if seriously hurting someone meant surviving? its not in our modern day nature to kill someone if we have not lived that life in a war zone, living rough or a gang criminal.
Joe Blogs with wife and two kids who trains in MMA or self defence twice a week is playing at it compared to a soldier, police TSG officer or criminal. But simplicity is still required even for these groups of naturally nurtured violent people.
