  • In our previous episode we compared the tone of a synthetic erhu with a python skin erhu. Today we are comparing the tone of a starter grade Rosewood erhu with a concert grade Ming Qing wood Erhu.
    Here are the erhus used in the video:

    it seems like the high end one is a bit fuller overall and especially on the highest notes holds up much better than the entry level one, but im sure its possible to get the cheap one to sound better in that range as well maybe with different bowing technique or articulation

    Very nice video. I know very few about erhu. From what I know about drums and guitars, wood type might not have the greatest impact on sound. It's importance might be lesser than skin type, skin tension (& uniformity & thickness), sound box size (huge dif in this video), bow quality. But from your video episode 15 about erhu disassemble, the sound made by the handle at 5:05 suggest a very hard wood...

    I have a question--for erhus, I noticed that there's a distinctive sound that's unique to erhu and not on violin. It's a "reed-sounding" quality. How do erhu players achieve that sound? Is it through sliding into every note? Or vibrato?
    While the violin sings/cries and sounds very clean, the erhu sounds raspier, more natural/wooden.
    Right now, when I play, I just sound almost exactly like I did when I started violin, but I want to sound like an erhu.

    • @EasonMusic
      @EasonMusic  Před 2 lety +3

      Hi there! So sorry for not replying you sooner. there are a lot of factors that make the erhu sound as it is, but the main component has to be the python skin and the types of bridge that you choose.
      Even erhus from different regions have different tone colours too. The raspier, more brash tones are typically erhus produced in Beijing region.
      You can check out our video on erhu tones from different regions in this video we made, hope you'll like it! :)

      New to this thread but I found this comment very useful! Thank you for your informative video, I am also a intermediate to advanced string player and I always heard this instrument timbre in oriental songs that I've loved and had no idea what the sound was until my very experienced teacher just said "Oh, that's an Erhu!" Since then I've been absolutely hooked and will get my hands on this beautiful instrument next week.

      they have a 3x payment option though. Concidering that a lot of ehrus for beginners are around 200-300 the prize for this starter one is quite fair especially since it sounds quite alright compared to many other starter ehrus. Wanting to pay 100 for a ehru as a beginner, there will be a much worser sound for sure

    I just purchased a Lin Sheng erhu which cost more than. twice as. much as my first erhu, however, my first erhu has a more beautiful sound and I regret selling it. My teacher keeps telling me that the tone of my new erhu will improve after 6 months of regular playing but I'm feeling discouraged. It just sounds too bright and one dimensional compared to the cheaper one. Is there anything I can do to make it sound more mellow? Will its tone really improve with age and regular use?

I speeded up the process by sticking my erhu next to my hifi speakers, covering everything with a duvet (to prevent my neighbours going mad) and leaving it on. I also bought a Hu Han Ru erhu from Easons which I am very happy with. Both excellent erhus.

      Tenzin Lecktsok my first pick would be a small diaphragm condenser microphone for quick transient response. AKG makes the perception170 for relatively cheap (for a microphone), $1-200 and Audio Technica makes good mid priced ones like the AT4021 for about $350. I can’t offer much help if you decide to go the pickup route, I’m not too sure a piezo would work too well but they’re easy to make so it might be worth a shot.
