      GM spent perhaps a billion dollars in the 70's and couldn't solve the problem and gave up. No one other than Mazda has made them in unity.

    I don't have time to list and then explain all the things wrong with this video, the verbal typos, the things stated as fact that are completely theory, and still others that were just flat out wrong.
    You did cover one the most important things people need to know about a rotaries, how inefficiently they burn gasoline. In the conventional sense, they do lend themselves quite nicely to e85. Obviously I've never experienced one with hydrogen, but hydrogen burns so fast and efficiently, that is a truly interesting prospect. Thanks for the bits and pieces that could be valuable.

    I love the 1989 Mazda RX-7. It was fast and smooth…but does burn lots of oil and gas. One of the best car nevertheless that I’ve driven.

    Japanese and Chinese government don't get along well. Battery Tech is firmly in Chinese hands, so Japanese car makers are forced to look for an alternative, which is good for everybody as there might be better tech out there. But this is just sad... citing better aerodynamics as an advantage of the rotary engine is grasping at straws. And while hydrogen as a fuel is certainly interesting, without infrastructure to fuel cars it will fail. And I'm afraid with EV infrastructure on the rise and batteries improving the window where there is even a chance for hydrogen is closing.

      The "infrastructure" you refer to is dependent on "the grid". Electrical power needs to expand to satisfy the demand. The pipe dreams of wind and solar power that require huge batteries to store and draw power from are too expensive to be practical. This concept of using an onboard generator to maintain battery charge and/or drive the vehicle is brilliant. Each vehicle has it's own power station everywhere it goes. The available power at EV charging stations is distributed to each vehicle drawing current. The result is that as more vehicles are actively charging, the longer it takes to get a full charge per vehicle. If the sun isn't shining or the the wind isn't blowing this time period could get very long.

    Have they solved the rotor tip seal problem? I doubt it.

      What problem, that it's a wear component? Big fat hairy deal, "rebuilding" a rotary is easy and simple. You detach the end cap, pull the shaft with the rotors on it, swap out the seals, and put it back. Done! The entire engine has a total of less than two dozen moving parts and in the older 2-rotor 245 hp configuration weighed under 300 pounds. Any decent mechanic with the right tools and training could do it in a couple of hours tops.
      Moreover, apex seals HAVE gotten better and in the aftermarket and racing communities there are excellent ones that are quite durable. Even the old stock ones were only a problem when running high-boost turbocharged builds for extreme horsepower, basically chasing power could easily lead to pushing the apex seals beyond their limits. This was primarily an issue with the twin-turbo RX-7, especially when modified for more power than stock. Prior RX-7 generations (even the 2nd gen turbo) and the later RX-8 didn't have this problem and were quite reliable when cared for properly (such as not forgetting to refill the oil and letting it run out).

Only Mazda stuck with it and they only made about 2 million units over 45 years. At the same time Honda were pushing out more than 20 million piston engines a year!

      ​@@thamesmud Rotary engines, like every other engine tech, have benefits and drawbacks, along with some engineering hurdles. Primary among the advantages are an incredibly compact size and weight to power output ratio, very low complexity and number of moving parts, virtually zero vibration, very low parasitic losses, and ability to rev extremely high with incredible smoothness. Among the drawbacks are a low torque output meaning it has to rev high to make power, and challenges surrounding apex seals (a problem now mostly solved, thanks to the aftermarket performance and racing sectors) and relatively poor fuel efficiency and emissions. (something Mazda has been working on since the end of the RX-8 due to its inability to meet fuel economy and emissions requirements). The fact that they're announcing a production model means they must have solved those problems to a satisfactory degree that allows them to be viable for production.
      Why has it taken so long? For one, rotary engines are a relatively late development and have to compete with piston engine technology that has a five decade head start in getting the most out of it. Every technology with potential worth investing in begins crude and gets better with time and resources put into it, and the rotary has had significantly less of that compared to piston engines and thus has had less opportunity to reach its potential.
      Mazda is a small company, and don't have the huge amount of funding to pour into R&D. Other larger manufacturers have chosen other priorities, many of them being resistant to innovation (looking at you, US companies still sticking with pushrod V8s) and others not seeing the potential in the rotary concept especially when paired with their business model and range of vehicles offered. A lot of that comes down to the characteristics of the rotary, which throughout its existence has rendered it something of a niche thing. Primarily, the combined upsides and downsides have made it very well suited for lightweight, high-revving sports cars and race applications, and not so great for regular commuter cars and not at all suited to large heavy vehicles like luxury sedans, trucks, and SUVs. This is why it has had an intensely devoted enthusiast fanbase and little mass-market penetration.
      Using it as a range extender in a hybrid configuration changes all that. The torque problem is solved by the electric motor handling the low-end grunt and the rotary handling the high-end power in the rev ranges where it shines. This also covers the fuel efficiency issue quite nicely. And finally, it brings the rotary into viability with a much wider range of vehicles than the traditional lightweight sports cars which were its niche.
      This overcomes two major challenges that held back the rotary in the past. One is economies of scale, the sports car and racing applications were inherently low-volume and in fact the engines were largely hand-built because Mazda didn't make enough of them to make it worth devoting a high-efficiency assembly line to. With it moving into their high volume vehicle segments, that will change and the engine will finally get to show off its benefits in terms of coomplexity and number of moving parts which will translate to a much lower cost of manufacture. Secondly, being a niche sports car and racing engine meant there was little incentive for most mechanic shops to invest in the training and tooling to work on rotaries, which are quite different from anything they normally work on. With them going into higher production in much more mass-market vehicle segments, that will change as well.

      ​@@thamesmudThe biggest problem with rotary in an automotive application is carbon build-up. With lots of different owners, these engines aren't being run hard enough to fully burn out the carbon. Over time, that carbon builds up to the point that the tip seals aka apex seals start to stick in their grooves. When they start sticking, it lowers the compression which makes the engines further carbon up and more prone to flooding and hard to start.
      Modern piston engines are starting to have this same problem due to the use of low tension compression rings. Carbon is also making these rings stick and lowering the compression, not to mention the carboning up of valves with direct injection. All this to save fuel is just adding additional probelms for the owners out of warranty. Both types of engines are at their best when they run at freeway speeds but not so much city driving and not given the time to fully warmup is how you eliminate the carbon problem.

    Rotory engines need less oil and coolant? From what I know rotory engines burn oil by design.

      You can do a pre-mix to prolong it's life, but otherwise any oil burned is just from either a leak or whatever stayed on cylinder walls.

    How long does it take to recharge if you travel 1200 km, 10 mins I hope, and not 10 hours, ready for the next days travel. If so then these car are suitable for Australian conditions.

    Some things were left out of this video.... the rotor and the cylinder have also been resharpen witch increase the compression ratio, increase torque and increase economy reducing internal wear with the double seals at the tips of each rotor. The seal materials have been improved and overall the little rotary has many other upgrades as in the last 30 years Mazda has never stopped its R&D. Running at a constant high speed against a generator also has many advantages in temperature stabilization and acceleration wastes... I am a retired engineer and mechanic of over 50 years and I applaud these advancements and Mazda's perseverance. I am now too old to buy one but I would if I had the need. They made this video as simple as possible not to loose the attention of the idiots like the one below....

    With the good design and technology, engine efficiency could be better than gasoline engine. EV car is a total deception on the so called economical. You charge them with power coming from power plants that is generally operating at 35% efficiency. At 70% EV efficiency times 35% - that is only 25% system efficiency. Worse for the environment at a hefty price. Even if rotary engine increase its efficiency to 50%, that is a game changer beating gasoline piston engine by 15%.

    I am more interested in urea fuel cells or engines. Urea is easily made from renewable energy is far more energy dense than H2, safe, and is tried, and tested technology.

    People should stop comparing this new rotary range extender with the old Mazda rotary propulsion engines. It's a new deal. Just read and understand the difference. The old problems of the rotary are gone in this new application.

    Rotary engines are brilliant in concept but failed in practice and that is why Mazda was the only car manufacturer in the world who kept on manufacturing cars with rotary engines until Mazda stopped making such cars a few years back. You can buy sporty 2nd hand ones for next to nothing in the UK and they are nice to drive!! The problem with the Rotary engine is the seal at the top of the triangular rotator, it cannot be sealed perfectly. Accordingly rotary engines are plagued with high fuel and oil consumption and high emissions. Otherwise rotary engines are smaller, smoother, lighter and with fewer moving parts than reciprocal IC engines of equal power output. I nearly bought one, 2nd hand of course. Voltmotion, you don not know the basics of the subject you are tackling here!!

      Yes, and the hydrogen part is just greenwashing. Without a commercially viable fuel-cell and infrastructure, hydrogen as a fuel is dead in the water.

    Wow! What a load of misinformation! The Mazda MX-30 is just an overdue hybrid with a tiny rotary engine acting as a generator. The discontinued Chevy Volt tried this idea in the US and failed. BMW tried in their early electric car to add a small generator as a “range extender” and that failed to catch on as well. Mazda’s CEO should go back to sleep and forget the rotary engine.

    golly dont know where you got all you "facts" about rotary engines. It is not half the price to overhaul a rotary because it has half the parts, in fact it cost way more. It is a very hot engine that requires extra cooling and so much more that others have covered in the comments.

The choice for an EV is not related to the kind of fuel, it is for the simpler drive train versus the complexity of ICE, and other qualities that an EV carries. I predict that at least as 50% of automobiles on the road will be EV by 2040, there will be also ICE where it is necessary due to local circumstances, we will continue to see horse carriages, oxen carts, horses an burros. What we see today in EVs I predicted in 1945 while attending a "Course of Practical Electricity", but economic difficulties I never had the chance to convert my TOPOLINO to a test car with the possibility to switch from original to hybrid, full electric, and many other versions, today I am 91 yo and drive Civic hybrids for more than 20 years.**|*

    Another AI vid. 600 MPH ( time index 4:59) is not a mistake a real narrator would make. Most of this info is basic knowledge and background info about the history of rotary engines. The Apex deals are still a problem spot and only marginal improvements gyave been made. The fact that this engine will run mainly as a generator with a very narrow operating band compared with the dynamics of a rotary engaging in direct propulsion. It's obvious that increased engine reliability will be a result.

    I don't hate Mazda. I actually quite fondly recall my little '84 626 5-speed from back in the day. But Mazda, being Mazda, has squandered its resources with this desperately complicated "solution" to ev "problems" that already have been solved by others much more simply. Funny their ceo would claim to "destroy" evs while underpinning this hybrid with batteries and relegating the wankel rotary to playing backup to the electric motor. How does that do anything to "destroy the ev revolution?? Oh yeah, it doesn't. It merely makes a more complicated (aka, more costly) play thing for enthusiasts and die-hard ev deniers.

    USA n crude oil producing countries n gasoline retail companies are afraid of EV. Basically, EV has much lower maintainence cost n less parts. That'll kill gasoline vehicles Many countries that paying high fuel price will go for EV.

    Just like Toyota and hydrogen. Great but if that's the way then infrastructure would need to be built. That'll take decades to accomplish. Better get on it. I support hydrogen but i don't support the battery only push. Right now ev is a bad technology.

    Gas price gonna be higher and higher, and you intrude new combustion engine. Environmental friendly is new direction, and E.U. would not support it. Gas is history.

    Garbage rotary engine. I bought a brand new Mazda RX8 in 2006, POS car needed an engine replacement at 50k. Mazda replaced under warranty, but I was told, the next one ($15,000) was on me. The problem was they had to thin out the engine oil so much to get the car to pass emissions that the apex seals won't last. I treated that damn car like a princess. Design is fatally flawed, stay away from it.

    good luck to Mazda e to all car makers. It seems like another attempt to pack too much machinery in vehicles that should be designed for simplicity affordability and no or low maintenance. Hybrid power is a great engineering exercise but not a long-term solution. It would be better spending Mazda finite resources in developing affordable and efficient EVs.

      "crashing?" Rubbish. EV sales are up each year better than the last, despite any seasonal fluctuations. The OPPOSITE of "crashing." The carmakers claiming ev market crash are the ones losing out to their rivals.
      Legacy automakers have a conflict of interest. No wonder they are struggling. ​But the likes of Tesla, BYD, MG, Polestar, Hyndai, Kia and others defy your claims.

    no engine can win over a non polluting electric motor, not by a longshot, plus plug in hybrids are nothing new. sorry Mazda try again. the only way a engine surpasses EVs is if there's no exhaust. it also doesnt matter what fuel is used, or consumption, it still pollutes.

      Not necessarily. Closed cycle methanol or ethanol is entirely possible, as well as artificially created hydrocarbons using renewable energy and Co2 from the air.

      You're talking in terms of emissions but owners arent worried about that. What owners are concerned with is the out of warranty cost. Lots of ev batteries are bitting the dust after 100k. How would you like to spend 10k to change your battery when MOST people wont have to change their engine at that same mileage? Tesla right now is having a major problem with the batteries dying afyer warranty. This is why I still beleive that hybrids are the best solution because at least you have the engine as backup like in a Prius.

      Yes, EV’s are coal-powered. Plus, the extreme labor and raw materials needed for the batteries…then a few years later the problem of how to dispose of the battery…plus, who is buying the used EV’s? Soon too, we will finally learn that oil from the ground is renewable and not a fossil fuel. We were scammed about that.
      I love that Mazda isn’t bowing a knee to the EV gods. Long live the ZoomZoom.
