Anne was indeed a great actress. During her later years, my husband became a regular email corresponder with her. He worked in the film industry in the 1970s, so they had a lot to chat about. She sent us a personally autographed photo. She was very down to earth, quite a friendly woman. She was struggling with lung disease from smoking, just as Frank and Dino, and so many other actors of her era had in their later life. Unlike many stars, Anne ran her own little website. If you wrote to her, it was really her that replied. She was a highly capable performer, and left behind a huge range of work, from Honey West, to the young woman born on Altair, to the desert dweller of Black Rock, she gave us dynamic and vibrant portrayals... Sincerely missed by her fans, may her Spirit rest in peace.
She was a favorite of mine but I had no idea she had a website. I have some clippings of her attending Jeffrey Hunter's birthday.
Her show " Honey West," was what got me into martial arts. That show introduced me to the world of martial arts. It preceded " The Green Hornet " therefore is was Anne Francis not Bruce Lee who was the reason I earned a Master's Degree in Kung Fu.
I regret not knowing about her website until she became too ill to reply to requests. She had some iconic roles, including Forbidden Planet.

Ann Francis recounted in an interview about her work on this episode that unlike any other television series she ever worked on that unique to just this series alone there at MGM the entire cast and crew rehearsed the entire episode day after day for an entire week before any filming of any sort whatsoever at all began, so as she put it everyone knew their part and everyone else’s cold like a well old machine. I found that quite fascinating. Ann was really impressed with that fact about how the Twilight Zone was produced.
I loved how she mentioned that, too. Like the old saying goes: "They don't make them like this anymore."
I love Anne France and this episode. It did not have or need much dialog.

One of the best episodes, in my opinion. The twist is so clever and so unexpected. When I first watched as a kid, I took it for what it was, and it was quite creepy. But watching as an adult, I think there are meanings that go deeper than just the face value of the story. And, until now, I had no clue that it was a mannequin and not Anne Francis! Wow! So much relatability in this episode when you think about it. Great video, Rick. 👍👍👍👍
A favorite.
What I'd give to have that mannequin they made of her! It's got to still be around, somewhere. Remember the time machine used in Rod Taylor's "The Time Machine"? Someone actually found it in a junk shop, in pieces. Then he bought it, and spent thousands restoring it to its former glory, where it is now touring the country to be enjoyed all over again.
This is one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes. It used to scare me to death as a kid. I always thought store mannequins were creepy. Anne Francis is one of my favorite actresses, too. I agree that she is wonderful in this particular episode. Watching as an adult, I really like the story even more as I see the metaphors and deep meanings.
This is one of my favorite episodes. Very well cast. I also read that Ann Francis got to keep the head of her mannequin.
After Hours is my favorite Twilight Zone episode. When Anne Francis says calmly at the end, "I'm a mannequin." It's mind blowing.
This is a favorite of mine. Anne Francis was perfect for this part. The writing and direction was perfect at building the suspence of the mystery of what was happening. It was creepy and it haunted you after watching it. Excellent video Rick. Great Choice.

Yes. The Twilight Zone is one of my favourite shows. It seems like a normal show at the beginning with some twist or becomes twisted twards the end. Either it is surprising or a horribly slow realization comes over me to look for a way off this ride into ....The Twilight Zone.

Ann Francis, loved her in the classic Sc-iFi 1956 probably my top 10 popular movies 'Forbidden Planet. This movie obviously influenced Star Trek 10 years later. Thank you Rick. I knew those were real manikins at the end. You just confirmed.
My favorite show is season 2 "The Obsolete Man" because it accurately predicts the society we live in today.
This is one of my favorite episodes! That actress did a great job at creating haunting suspense and making me real like I was actually walking in her shoes. It’s definitely one of the creepiest episodes lol 💕

This is one of my all time favorite episodes. It built up really well and I did not see the ending coming. To this day, I think about mannequins I see in stores coming to life. The kind they have now days would be pure nightmare fuel! 😱😄

Anne Francis was a friend of mine, and I got to accompany her to a tribute in her honor in Hollywood in the late nineties. The group showed Forbidden Planet and this episode to the audience, and it was quite surreal to sit next to her as we watched this. It was the show that made me a fan when I was a kid when it was first shown. She was quite proud of it and I agree that it contains one of the best performances of her entire career.
"Climb off it, Marsha!" I have always enjoyed the episodes in "the current day" of Twilight Zone over the ones about westerns and war as the setting!

I’ve watched that episode a number of times. Keeps my attention every time. Every time there’s a Twilight Zone marathon I watch . Anne Frances was the right pick for that role. The Mask episode is one of my favorites also.

Indeed one of my favorites of the series... As a kid watching this episode, I always thought the elevator operator was Bing Crosby until I became older. Then again, as a kid Walter Cronkite reminded me of Walt Disney and often wondered how he was lucky to be on television weekdays and Sunday nights.

What a wonderful review!!! I was a kid when this originally aired (62now) and I really didn't understand what was happening. Now years later...when I watch this episode, it really is one of the best ones in the series. My favorite is the one with Burgess Meredith... I'm an avid reader with glasses...and I really felt his pain when his glasses broke. Sorry 😊 got off track!!! Fantastic episode and review!!!

This episode had it all. It conjured up every person’s nightmare of manikins coming to life after the store closes.
Rod Serling was from my hometown, Binghamton, NY. I caught the letters BGM over the elevator at 5:37, which was from my grandparent's home address. My grandparents knew Rod Serling. Such a great find!!

Excellent episode! It scared me a lot, when I first saw it! Anne Francis was great in this! Even knowing the ending, this is still a fun episode to re-watch.
My mom, uncle, and I are absolutely TZ fanatics; we all discovered it by watching the reruns. Anne Francis was also in my very favorite episode, 'Jess Belle'. My uncle still sneaks up behind me at the store where I work and whispers, "Who do you think you're fooling, Marsha?" thanks to this episode. It's never been one of my favorites, but I never thought it was creepy.
i love the episode, and every new years, im lucky enough to catch it on the scifi channel. I cant explain my attraction to many of the episodes, such as this one, but to me, its engaging from end to end. After dozens of viewings, i'm still happy with the plot twist, and, (maybe ive just realized my attraction) Rod's closing commentary. He does lead us into, another dimension. Thanks for the post, keep 'm comin'!

This was indeed a creepy episode but it's one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes!!! Not only was Ann Francis beautiful, she was a terrific actress!!! Thanks Rick for sharing this fun video!!! 👍👍🎄
Her best film was the 1956 Forbidden planet where she played the daughter Alaira Morbius! She was a beauty but the real stealer of the movie was Robby the Robot and the very space-age flying saucer. I saw the movie on t.v. when I was 11 in the early 1960s! Still watch it every time I can.
It is one of my favorite episodes. It's noteworthy how they gave the actresses high collars or strategically placed necklaces so that when the mannequin head was attached the seam would be hidden. The mannequin for Anne's character would have been absolutely perfect if the eyes hadn't been painted slightly cockeyed.

Wow! Rick, you have outdone yourself with this video. The background you presented about this TZ episode was amazing. I remember Anne Francis from this episode very well, but I can never forget her performance as Honey West and Bruce Biteabit, her pet ocelot on the show. Fridays as kid would have been less exciting without her show the year it was on TV. Too bad Honey West lasted only one season.
Yeah, I just saw this episode a few days ago for the first time after having seen it as a kid sixty years ago! This is one that I didn't remember the ending, so it was as you described - seriously tense and the twist is just great! How Rod Serling came up with all those incredible screenplays in such a short time is truly epic!

You are sooooo right this is one of the best of the Twilight Zone series. Anne Francis was a superb actress in her day and no one could have done a better job with this episode.....Classic
...this episode story stayed w/me as a kid in that if you mentioned Twilight Zone, this "department store" story would come to mind. I never understood the "gold thimble" bit....like in 1960, who and why does anyone buy a thimble, and what did that have to do w/the storyline. Agreed on Anne's reputation in the industry. Underrated, as she definitely had a distinctive personal style. Fortunately she made some good film/TV choices that will have her work noticed for eternity.
As a kid in the 1960's I was deathly afraid of being in a department store close to closing time, for fear of being locked in. This particular TZ episode was the reason.

I remember this episode well, AND it's remake in the 80's version of the show, I think with Terry Farrell. VERY creepy, indeed!
This was the first Twilight Zone episode I ever watched when I was a kid - 40 years ago. It scared me so much, I turned off the TV and didn't finish the episode. The episode ran again several months later (this is before I had a VCR) and I got up the courage to watch it in it's entirety. The Twilight Zone remains one of my favorite shows of all time!

I used to have the whole DVD set of these classic Twilight Zones and yes, this was one of my favorites and I agree, one of the more creepy shows of the series. Very eerie. They definitely set a mood and it worked. Really enjoyable and interesting to see how much work went into this and yes, actual people when in 'mannequin mode' wouldn't have worked near as well. And yes, definitely more classic Twilight Zones, please!
It is amazing that the directors and the cast and crew were able to make such great episodes without CGI or anything like that. Part of the reason why the Twilight Zone episodes are so good is because they are filmed So well.
The Twilight Zone absolutely scared the s**t out of me! Just the music creeps me out. Now some were creepier than others, but this one was up there!
I saw this episode when it was first telecast. I was just a little boy back then, still a couple years away before JFK would be assassinated in Dallas. That's how long ago it was. To say the least, this episode was very frightening to a young boy in kindergarten. It remains one of my top episodes today.
Love this episode! As an 8th grade English teacher, I used to show it to my students when we had our unit on Suspense. They loved it as well.
Anne was so charming, I would have watched her read the phone book. I fell in love with her in Forbidden Planet and then in Honey West. She was in a lot of shows, like Alfred Hitchcock and The Fugitive and she is always good. This is in my top 10 Twilight Zones.

I have been a big fan of TZ, & I'll watch the marathon on Sci-fi channel, I've got a couple of books on the show, so you can have a bunch of episodes committed to memory, that episode is definitely a real spooky one, it's interesting how the episode starts, you don't suspect anything at first, then it gets interesting, & as things go along, it gets a little MORE interesting, & spooky sets in, then it all unfolds, you're into the ectoplasmic vortex, & then it's over, & you scratch your head asking yourself, is it real, or are you in shock because it sets your head to whirl????? Tune into the next episode, & go hmmmmmmmm!!!!!!

Anne Francis - Astoundingly beautiful and talented! And, the special effects with the mannequins was off the charts even by today's CGI effects.
I saw this episode when it was originally aired, and it DID make a big impression on me! Remember that then we got to see a show once on broadcast TV. There was no CZcams or Netflix to see in again and again, freeze the frame, and so on. That it was so memorable demonstrates that it was one of the top Twilight Zone episodes.
Good job on the video Rick. This episode brings back memory of our local department store in the 60s. It was a higher class store and this episode managed to really give a department store feeling as they were back then. To me, it is creepy how well they did this. I ended up working in that department store and after closing hours with the lights off it was like this. Brings back so much.
The Bernard Hermann Score for this episode was especially Creepy...definitely one of the most unsettling episodes I watched as a kid. The closing narration was classic....."it makes you wonder, the people you walk by...." Indeed!

This is probably one of my 5 favorite TZ episodes. I was hooked when she went to that top floor and there was only one item and one clerk there. The first time I watched this I had no idea where the episode was going. It is amazing how captivating these episodes are even today.

This was an excellent episode. I saw it when it was first out on CBS!!! Rod Searling was one of a kind and we lost him too early. There will never be another Twilight Zone. Most of the good episodes were haunting! Loved them all.

A favourite of mine. It's weird that Marsha has any memory of a 'mother' and somehow access to money! All the actors were brilliant, James Mulholland brought some comic relief as the floor manager. The elevator guy looks like my dad when he was younger

This is probably my favorite TZ episode. I first saw it as a teen and it really made an impact. For a long time I thought it was some kind of fever dream because no one else I knew had ever seen this episode. (This was pre-internet and/or IMDB) It's such a simple story and no "monsters" or bad guys, just a good mystery/thriller.

The mention of the silent scene reminded me of season 2 episode 15 "The Invaders" staring Agnes Moorehead, aka Endora from "Bewitched". Not a single word was uttered until the very end of the episode. I'm 64 and this show was one of my favorites when I was a kid and this episode was one of a few I can distinctly remember.

Very well done featurette, thank you. My thoughts having just rewatched this episode (and already knowing the spoiler) is how wonderful Miss Francis's acting is, of course, equaled by her amazing beauty. I was focused on the execution of this episode and appreciative of all the artistry involved. I had met the film editor, legendary Bill Mosher, so all his work on this series, his having edited so many of the first season classics, always adds to my enjoyment.

I agree Rick! It IS one of the best! The ONLY special effects "trickery" were the mannequins. It was pure acting, lighting, storytelling at its finest. Mark Tuttle is a master.Have you done a profile on him? He was in the biz a long time.
