Today we hone on another song by Guns N' Roses from Use Your Illusion II: Estranged.
You lot seemed to enjoy the deep dive into Knockin' on Heaven's Door in the previous video; whilst perusing through the comments I noticed that Estranged was mentioned more often than not. It's clearly a fan favourite so I thought I'd shine some light on it.
Estranged is a musical masterpiece and in my opinion features some of Slash's best ever licks and melodies. It's a shame it's only 9:23 long, tight sods they could have at least given us 11 minutes.
Enjoy the video!

illusions 1&2 are masterpieces
YES! They often get the cold shoulder from GNR die hards but I have a lot of love for both albums. So much time must have gone into them.
The Garden is my favourite GnR song
@@SpedSpedding I think Use Your Illusion 2 is their best album...it's my personal fav album by any band
You could make one great album with them, if you got rid of the crap. They should have left half of it in the studio and made one truly amazing masterpiece instead of two half-decent albums...
@@madaxe79 Totally agree, yet I do like most tracks on both albums. Kinda weird.
my favorite personality in the youtube guitar universe.
love the one liners and edits that probably go over most peoples head.
Estranged is my favorite Guns N' Roses song, and Slash is my favorite guitarist. So thanks for doing this video!
My pleasure! It’s an amazing song I agree.
It’s my favorite as well! But on the other end of the spectrum I love Coma!
I was in high school when this song and the two albums were released. Can’t recall there ever being more excitement for the release of these albums .
His solos on estranged and don’t damn me are two of my favorites. For a guy who admittedly can’t sing (he can’t- I’ve heard him try), he has the perfect ear for solos. It’s really remarkable.
Imagine how much more epic stuff they would of made if they could have just kept their shit together. Still pump both to this day
You're right, what would that 6th album have sounded like if they had their mindset now? Slash's stuff with Myles is mind blowing so it was always in the tank.
@@SpedSpedding I’ve always been amazed by Slash’s tone. I’d assumed he used some effects, but I asked him after a show in the mid 90s in Fort Worth, Tx and he assured me he doesn’t use effects (or didn’t at the time). Was all through his Marshalls.
You kill me, I’m 65 and into guitar about 7 years. I have to say you are entertaining. I learned a lot if Page songs from your channel. Just watched Estranged I’ll learn that tomorrow. And yes I’ve tuned one of my guitars to e flat. I wish I new all the scales you talked about in your tutorial.
How do you feel starting at 58? I thought I was too old to start at 33. I’d get frustrated and quit. Now 10 years later (that I could have been practicing), I feel too old at 43. But I’m not giving up this time! Wait, why I’m I sitting here watching other play for hours when I could be playing! Ugh!!!
Oh shit, you always put a smile on my face.
Haha that's awesome. I live for making people laugh, always have. You can ask any school teacher... 😂
Thanks for all these Slash lessons and breaking down the theory behind it!!
Such an amazing song and one of my favourites! Finally is time to learn it right! Thanks!
Amazing Ruben, you're gonna enjoy this one. Great bending practice too.
Outstanding video Sped! I really appreciate your approach to teaching and throwing in great bonus points
My pleasure! Thanks so much for watching and leaving a cool comment.
Another Spedtacular lesson!!! You always leave me wanting more. I have my LTD EC-1000 with Symour Duncan's tuned to the prescribed tone and downloaded a sweet Slash patch for the Boss Katana. 🤘
I’ve never owned a Katana! Didn’t realise they had downloadable patches. Is that over Bluetooth or have you got to usb it? Couple of students have them and probably don’t know either. 😂
I need that tone it sounds so beautiful man
Seriously their best song imo
I always enjoy your channel, the lessons are so well explained and the pleasantries are just what we need. Peace from Canada.
That’s so nice Giovanni, thanks so much. Glad you’re enjoying the content. 🍁
I like the song choices my friend. Loving your channel!
Thanks for watching Brock! Stoked that you’re enjoying your stay.
Great channel Sped, thanks. Bloody wicked song and doing justice to Slash’s playing/sound
Try my best. Glad you enjoy it! 🙏🏻
Love your playing. Keep it comin' 🤘
Thanks, will do!
Incredible!!
BRILLIANT Sped
Fantastic solo for sure
Great tutorial as always
Thanks for your insights and thoughts and the Tabs over on your Patreon 👍👍
Always so so interesting
And The improve at the end 👍👍👍 Oh WOW
💯🎸👏👏👏👍😎
Awesome Chris! Glad you liked my spin. You’ve also get everything you need to have a go yourself as well. 💪🏻
You're best video format IMHO🤙
For these last two videos? That's cool, I will keep it in mind.
Amazing, intonation, perfect. The sound and' 'spirit" comes and flows from your heart by your fingers. The best sound gear. Thank you.
My pleasure, thanks for the kind words!
Shit! Got all emotional there... cheers Sped! One of those feelings from Slash that just sticks... amazing... thanks for breaking it down!
Not many can do it with six strings can they? 😢 You’re welcome Scott!
Subbed because of your cool and collected Anglo Saxon demeanor. finally somebody who does not have a schtick.. keep the lessons slow and methodical like you do.. and calm....
Some real classics on those two albums, saw them back then at giants stadium at the meadowlands with metallica and faith no more, great show ! Good one Sped !
I remember reading about those shows in his book. Amazing, wish I could have been there for one of those!
Thank you Sped for always being right on the money when it comes to Slash.
You’re welcome! I do try me best. 💪🏻🥹
This is my favorite song by Guns and Roses. I never understood why it was not more main stream. But I am very happy it was not, because if it was, I would be sick of it. Thanks for sharing!
I completely agree.
I don’t think many people know it was based off the book by “Without You” by Del James (The November Rain video mostly). But there’s actually 3 (4 if you count the Don’t Cry alternate). So it’s actually a series, Don’t Cry, November Rain, Estranged, so I think it was so different (and long!) people just didn’t get it. Plus it’s a song that you really have to appreciate music for. Like in this video, there’s really no chorus, it’s all over the place. In an interview with Slash (or Izzy I can’t recall), they said Coma was so hard to play because it’s all over the place that sometimes they’d have to have the sheet music with them lol!
Wow, Sped. Just caught something I haven’t seen before. But it sounds right to my ears. After some bends, you are bringing back to the whole note, and pausing for a satisfying length of time before adding the vibrato. I don’t recall seeing this exactly the same way before with a Slash solo. Maybe it’s always been everywhere and I’m just noticing it now. But it sounds just right.
When it comes to vibrato and these lessons, I have a few listens and do my thing. I try to remember exactly where it is but I don’t want things to end up overly mechanical. As a player I always like to resolve a note for the ear before exponentially bringing vibrato in. That way you get to hear the note undisturbed before sweetening it. We’re only ever going sharp after all so I think it’s a nice way to accentuate.
Best way to end the week with a bit of Slash.. saw them live at Milton Keynes Bowl back in the early 90’s.. amazing.. and ooooo I did like the little A/G/F run and fills in the second part, made me pull my soloing/rock face and I wasn’t even playing it!! 😂 … top work as ALWAYS!.. 🤘🤘
😂😂😂 I love that! I wasn’t playing anything from the song, simply eluding to the fact it’s the same progression. Glad it got the trout mouth seal of approval. I made ALL of the faces as you can see. 😂
What a lie! Everyone knows they never used to show up to their concerts 😂 unless I was just lucky and they always left early. But I still go see them now they play almost too long! My old legs can’t stand for that long lol! I saw them on NYE in Vegas. My friend is Axls realtor there. He was showing him a penthouse next to the venue. I was in the lobby and he walked right by me. I thought to myself “well he won’t be on time”. So I made my way to the venue and he was already playing!!! He seems so much happier these days as well!
Wasn't a GnR fan, but I was in my early twenties when this song broke and I instantly bought the album because of the angular nature of Slash's playing on this track.... and this is coming from a Bowie, Joy Division, Bauhaus, Roxie, Marr guy! Who writes in this melodic way and chooses these notes? Still incredible to this day. Love to know your signal chain in this video.
Really cool and helpful video dude!! Can you give some hint about how to get the tone? Thanks
Tone's great, I'd add a little bit more gain for more sustain tho...Playing is great too but there's a lot of parts that sound different from the original (for example that section that starts at 8:30) mainly because you're picking a note and sliding it to the next note and then picking the other note again while Slash picks just the first note and bends it up to the next note. He actually does that A LOT, he does a lot of 1T bends, 1/5T bends and even 2T bends sometimes... if you watch the Live in Tokyo DVD you can clearly see how he bends almost every note in his more melodic solos like in November Rain, Estranged and Knocking on Heavens door.
He always bends. It’s almost his signature. He’ll bend a high E to a low E 😂 but yeah most of his solos are around the 12-17 frets with many bends. I also read he doesn’t like to use his pinky if possible. But with those bends, some girl is lucky! lol! Also what’s a DVD? Laser Disc or Betamax baby!
Great video. I wouldn't have cared if I didn't learn anything and yet I did. Great tone also.
That’s awesome! I try my best to put something entertaining and educational in each video. This is kinda split into a few sections again.
Good stuff!
Thank you!
Your playing and tone is, as always amazing. For me November Rain has some of the finest rock solos of all time. Every emotion is captured in them. Slash knows melody
Wearing that song proudly on my arm! ⛪️ ❤️🔥 And yeah, he does. One of the best.
@@SpedSpedding Could you be any cooler? Honestly asking 😎
@@pageluvva I definitely could... 😂 You wanna see what I wear in the garden.
Bloody masterpiece
Isn’t it just.
I’d forgotten that solo. I haven’t listened to that record for decades. Nice one!
Worth digging them both out? 🤘🏻🔥
Awesome brother from Warren 😎
Thanks for the visit
First of all amazing play. your sound is top notch. I wonder what kind of effects does it take to get that sweet sound.
Excellent tone! What is your signal signal chain, settings, pedals or plug in?
Definitely the best tutorial for this solo on CZcams 👏 Also what amp are you using?
Top work as ever, Sped. Currently enjoying this while camping in a field in Norfolk, should have packed a Les Paul!
Haha, sounds idyllic! You'll have to nip out tomorrow morning and get yourself a new one like I mentioned in the video! 😂

We also need an honorable mention here to @NikoSlash when talking about great Slash teachers ;) Sped, thank you for your videos! Superb work and content delivery! Also, BXRELL is awesome!
Yeah Niko is an absolute monster player. Glad you like the new band. More exciting things coming soon. 😍
@@SpedSpedding also soooo nice seeing you interact with a lot of your fans and followers and answering so many comments here. That's a really clever and heart felt way to grow up yout fanbase properly: Excellent content and close attention to people! Also, hard thing to keep up with! Way to go!

@@SpedSpedding makes total sense. People feel special when you dedicate your time to answer them back. Keep the good content flowing, I'll keep coming for more, that's for sure!
Great video my friend. Great Slash solo love the tone & the bends. One of my favorite Slash solos. Funny thing I saw them live when they first album came out Slash went into the intro of I think it was My Michelle & I remember thinking shit dude use a tuner I laughed out loud he was way out of tune but I pretty sure back then they were mostly out of it back then lol. Burrell sounds great wishing you all the success you have shit tons of talent. Best to you & Gab.
Hahaha yeah I've seen some footage from the early days and of course read his book. It sounds wild. Reckon he needed some Ratio Locking Tuners back then, why didn't he watch my video! 😂 Best to you!
Fuk tunin’ a guitar😂……. Perfect timing Sped, as I literally just purchased the Epiphone Slash in November Burst Tuesday this week. Guess what? You’re still THE MAN!!!! I’ll be diggin’ into this!!! Thanks, love your channel man🔥🔥🔥
Haha that’s awesome Gary. How do you find them? I was actually speaking to Gibson about that range and making some content for them. It’s not happened yet though.
@@SpedSpedding Oh that would be cool! Hopefully you’ll be able to make some content! I like it! I was thinking about a Slash or Custom Epihone when I stopped in Guitar Center. It was the last day of their sale and I got it for $649.99 new. Only the November Burst for that price. Absolutely steal! The pickups are pretty good, but would be better with something like the Seymour Duncan APH-2s Alnico II Pro Slash Humbucker 2-piece Pickup Set - Zebra/Reverse Zebra
You nail it bro. Your Lester have an ebony board? It sure looks dark.
What year is it?
Thanks bro. Just subscribed
It's like Slash asked Axl, "Dude, what would a guitar sound like if it was a dolphin, swimming?", to which Axl answered, "Dolphins in the video🤗!". So many tasty bends😋.
Rumour has it Slash actually used a 🐬 on the record. 😂😂😂
@@SpedSpedding I can picture them bringing a dolphin into the studio in those days ("sing, dammit!"), trying to one-up Led Zep with their fish nonsense😄.
@@ahyesverygood1336 Considering what they are said to have got up to in the studio during the recordings Appetite, I *really* don't want to hear any implications about dolphin incidents.
@@meadish Axl with Steven's girlfriend? Should have had a dolphin back then to bite Axl in the ass.
Buen video, una pregunta. Qué cámara de video usas?
What are you plugged into for this video? Your tone is amazing.
Estranged is my favorite gnr song. So epic.
Glad I picked it for you. 🙌🏻🥹
Awesome job! Hey how did you get that awesome guitar tone? What’s your gear in this video? Thanks!
Try and search on CZcams. Lots of people with settings. But there’s many! But might get you in the ballpark!
Nothing sounds better than tastefully controlled wide bends in a melodic and memorable solo. Except they don't when I try to play them. :D Thanks again, Sped.
Decent vibrato is one of the hardest things to master. You’ll get it. Strength and control incoming. 💪🏻
Quite Possibly. It is indeed a masterpiece.
A true masterpiece Glen. 🤘🏻🎩
You could be mine is also an amazing song with great riffs and an awesome solo
I love that song! Might take a look at it at some point. 🎩😏
This is awesome,Could you please do a video on the November rain final solo ?🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I’ve taught all three solos from November Rain in separate videos! Search it up. 💪🏻
@@SpedSpedding thank you, I’ll give that a look 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🎩
Love it Sped, thanks for sharing. It's good to see that you've got a growth-spurt on in the knee department. You'll be growing adult fingers soon. ;)
Guns and Roses and Metallica were the reasons I picked up the guitar at the age 13, especially when the two albums and the black album popped up. However I always gravitated more towards the Guns side of things and it has stayed this till today. Especially Slash is a constant in my life as i to this day follow all his ventures. He now has the imho best rock singer in history of rock with Mr. Miles Kennedy, who is imo at least on par with Robert Plant and David Coverdale! Thanks for the lesson, that was indeed cool!
Myles is incredible. Never seen Slash and Myles live which is a shame. Caught the Guns reunion first time round though and they were killer.
A personal favourite is Not For Me, both Slash and Myles are outrageous on that track.
Axl came to his sences and finally realized he wasn't anything without his bandmates
Yes
😏🔥
“Honey, Sped said to add it to the rack and don’t look back, so not to worry!” I’ll try that one out and let you know how it goes! ☠️

Coma in UYI 1 is the most technical GnR song.
You reckon?
Call Amberton's! Ha. this explains why i'm up to 1o guitars and I'm still in my beginning lessons.
Shows us slash was lead in guns n roses all along
Very hard for Axl with his personality disorders but money brought him back!
Its very American anthemy sounding, but still one of my all time fave songs
I know what you mean. It’s like a sad epic Top Gun. 😂🪽
@@SpedSpedding HAHA, you hit the nail right on the head. Its such a masterpiece this song, gotta give cred to Axl as well with the piano work. An amazing mix.
Fuck yes!

Play Don't Cry by GNR plz IDK how can i play it ,And i wanna say something to be honest u the only one when i need to learn something for GNR i always watch u IDK man i feel u like Slash so u doing well BTW because of u i played November Rain solo, Knockin on Heaven's Door solo, Sweet Child O Mine intro and first solo until the fast part snd i'll learn Estranged solo too and i've been just start playing guitar 5 or 6 month ago so i owe u dude and i love u sfm really
You kinda look like the very young version of Eric Clapton. I saw a vid of him talking about vibrato and the importance of it. Anyway You look somewhat like he did 50 years ago or longer.
Thanks for your vids and teaching how to play songs. You are a great teacher.
I checked on ytube. It's an interview of Eric Clapton in 1968. He was talking about vibrato and the wah wah pedal.

@@brockpinson949 Thank you Brock! I love chatting to people on here. 🙌🏻
It might be a reference to led zeppelin. I believe slash mentioned he got a black double neck guitar because someone was already using a red one.
I do wonder, would it be possible for you to experiment giving out lessons in which you describe the timings. Of the notes (if you haven't done a note already). I think that would help a lot of beginners like myself. Just name some notes like this is at 1, this is at & etc. What are your thoughts?
(Also, due to a bug, I could not see this comment as I typed it. Hope it comes out okay!)
Yes, just confirmed that I wasn't hallucinating. Slash did say he liked using a black double neck guitar because Jimmy page was famous for using a cherry one. And the music video for this does feature it. The conspiracy deepens. It's very possible slash knew of Jimmy's existence.
I bought a red one. Only to realize I can’t even play a regular 6 string lol
If you put a black top hat on it would be cool!
Haha I’ve done that before. And the sunglasses. 😂🎩
@@SpedSpedding you sound good. Almost too good! You could take slash's job♥️
Yes, yes it is.
🤘🏻😏 Steve knows.
The answer is no. But it is great.
Fair.
Question? About a different guitar player in a whole different band...
Why is " The Song Remains The Same " from Zeppelin so difficult to play with just you and your guitar and nothing else?
Song came out in 1991. The video was 1994. 😊
As a single in 1994 yeah. When I credit individual songs I always just grab the single release year. Need you in a pub quiz though for sure. Haha.
GnR coulda been our (Americans) Zep-Stones-Aerosmith all rolled up into one........ but they blew it 😓
I've been saying this since 1996 when Slash left the band. Between the drugs and alcohol, plus Axls ego they just couldn't hold it together.
Now play it without bends 😎
Ok, but why?
Slash only needs one string and just bends one string the entire song lol.
With a guitar
Slithercis g9od notcov3r thextopvin tab butcit so7nds good
🤷🏻♂️
Stop it Sped, you know this isn't No Quarter live solo 😂
the only key to play this song is Guitar Feedback in front of Amp, it's useless to olay this without Feedback😂
Tbh, I never listened to G&R. I recall there was a riot at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal after Axl buggered off after a few minutes. So, on account of Axl being a bell-end, I never listened to them. Slash seems to be a very good player. Also, can't stand Axl's screeching.
P.S. love the hat! 😆
Sounds a little like pink Floyd?
It does doesn’t it. Comfortably Numb?
@@SpedSpedding 👍😊
Reverse bends could be better.
Wow strange introduction
Use you illusion is when we learned that rocks stars are not gods, and all the hype was "money for nothing". I just think GnR didn't have much to say musically, and guys with much less skills, like Kurt Cobain were more musically literate and true artists.
At least we had Bowie for awhile. That sorta helped the 90s
I'm a huge Bowie fan as people know, you may not, continually evolving and original and innovative until the end. I do think there's a lot of special moments across these two albums. They're probably just not for you (as Myles sings) and that's cool. Thanks for commenting!
Bahahaha you were so into Bowie that you couldn't appreciate the illusion albums?Damm bro they we large complete works of art so much music going on. That's OK if it wasn't for you but seriously those albums were intricate and amazing. So many great songs in one giant opera.
The “true artist” thing is subject at best and pretentious at worst. I agree the the UYI albums pale in comparison to appetite. I didn’t care from them when they came out and largely ignored them until the last year or two as I got back into playing guitar. I think there are some great songs across both albums but several mediocre ones as well. I think axl pushed them in a different direction musically and got away from the bare bones dirty club rock that many of us preferred. Nirvana was very cool but it’s a different type of music. It’s like comparing the velvet underground to the New York dolls. Indie rock tends to be more cerebral and arty which is cool, but The Rolling Stones are really none of these things and they are cool as well.
Sped, that reverb is absolutely sick. Mind sharing what one?
Could you tell me the guitar and amp settings please as I can’t get them. Thanks!
No. Next question.
No more questions.
