    Sweet Talkin Woman has a number of riffs and harmonies that evoke doo wap styles of the 50's and 60's... multi layered vocals and a driving beat that makes one rise to one's feet! All hail ELO! Same! I first heard 3 of ELO's songs on the radio, and the DJ did say something like, "Here's a block of ELO," and played The Eldorado Overture, Can't Get It Out of My Head, and Roll Over Beethoven, in the summer of '75, age 8. I was mesmerized, permanently hooked, though it was several years later that I learned that the first two were two separate songs. I recognized Roll Over Beethoven from having heard Chuck Berry, and the Beethoven's Fifth intro was a cool addition.
      Over the next 5 years, I heard several ELO songs; some of which I knew was them, some I heard but didn't know who the songs were by. In the autumn of '80, I heard a 2-hour Westwood One history of ELO, though I don't remember the actual title of the show, and I knew most of the songs; for some, though, I hadn't realized they were by ELO. I was more of a fan than I realized!
      I sometimes wish I could hear ELO's songs for the first time again, as an adult, just for that thrill.

  • @aquariaaustin2077
    @aquariaaustin2077 Před 3 lety +8

    The reason this song is so great is that Jeff Lynne never let it get boring. Something is a little different in every verse section, pre-chorus and chorus. Maybe the arrangement is a little different (example: the lead in to the second chorus is lighter and higher than the first round). Maybe a vocal line is dropped in from out of the blue, or there's an instrument playing the same riff another instrument played elsewhere. The hard vocal breakdown near the end is beyond inspired. You're thinking they'll do the standard chorus codas to the end, then they make you sit up hard at the sudden--but completely believable--change.
    This is fantastic pop songwriting. Should be taught in musicology classes everywhere.

    Personal favorite, I live in rural Kansas, and when my boy was in Pre-K I would drive him up the lane to meet the bus. One morning this came on the radio, and to my surprise, I could hear him in the back singing the response (slowdown...hold on... ECT.) I now can't listen to it, with out hearing it in my mind. He's 17 now, and growing into a fine young man.

    Hi Jamal. E.L.O. Electric Light Orchestra. I bought this 45 at Rock 'n Easy Record Shop in Brunswick, Georgia in early '78. The vinyl was not black, it was a see-through light purple record that was just so cool. The ultra talented Jeff Lynne and his awesome band took their classical music training and rocked it way up creating a sound like no other musician or music group ever before or since. Super nice guys by all accounts, too. Love, love, love it and glad you do, too!!

And I can tell from your reactions that you are hearing EVERYTHING in the song -- picking up on all of it. You can listen to virtually ANY ELO song -- they are all great.
