This was probably the worst game of Leverkusen this season yet. But with all due respect to West Ham, and they deserve all the respect they can get after this game, we mustn't forget that Leverkusen players had been partying the past few days and had a hangover. Considering that and the fact that this has been the 44th unbeaten game in a row, it's crazy that they somehow still prevented a loss.

Thats probably because of xabi alonsos philosophy when it comes to his squad. Everyone who is there gets played. They have good squad depth and he uses it by not always having the "star players" on the pitch. West Ham really had a lot of chances of to put them away in the first half but there lack of them being clinical cost them. Leverkusen were actually really poor in this match and in truth should have lost it however they got away with it.
Leverkusen have been insanely good this season but make no mistake to go unbeaten in a whole season you need an absolutely absurd amount of luck to go your way, credit to them though.

Such an unbeaten run is a nice thing to have, but Leverkusen would throw it out of the window if they have to. It could be seen yesterday when they were 0-1 down at West Ham but still kept their composure. Instead of hunting a goal like crazy just to uphold their record, they slowed things down to silence the crowd, have West Ham chase the ball and gain back control of the match. If it would have ended 0-1, they would have been fine with it because it would have secured the semifinal. The equalizer was more like a nice bonus. They showed great strategic intelligence and maturity by that. An unbeaten record is nice to have, and the Americans love those things, but you must never let these things turn into a liability and have you do things that you wouldn't do normally.

Bayer Leverkusen clinched the Bundesliga title a couple of days ago with 5 games remaining and now they’re in the Europa League semifinals and have to play the German Cup final next month. The treble is very much on for Bayer Leverkusen. With a minimum of 8 games remaining especially if they get to the Europa League final, there’s a possibility that Bayer Leverkusen wins a treble while also finishing the season undefeated and how many games are they unbeaten now, I’ve lost track of it because it seems like every time they play they don’t lose a game. Bayer Leverkusen are just inevitable and they’ve played so well and many times they’ve had to rely on luck to keep this historic undefeated run alive because whenever they fall behind and trail for a large period of the game, all of a sudden they just come back to draw or win and remain unbeaten. Against West Ham even though they were already ahead by 2 goals on aggregate, Bayer Leverkusen were behind facing another deficit and it didn’t matter in the end because they went through and avoided yet another defeat.

Bayern Munich has won the league 32 times. There is no way to beat them on that front. That's why the other stats are so important. Leverkusen could win the league with a record 94 points. Leverkusen could be the first team to win the league unbeaten. And of course winning by a margin of 16 points (or even more) over Bayern would also be historic. That's why they will do anything to win the last five league matches. As their last defeat was in May 2023, the have the chance to stay undefeated for a whole year and continue in the next season.
12 different teams have won the league so far. To stand out they need to do more. That will make sure that in 50 years from now people will still talk about this season.

The next five matches will be crucial if you care for that unbeaten run thing. Leverkusen will face a chunk of tough opposition in Dortmund, Stuttgart, Roma, Frankfurt and again Roma, all of it matches against teams that still have something to accomplish this season and are on a high themselves (possible exception Frankfurt). Staying unbeaten for an entire season is of course the White Unicorn of European football, but I don't think it would have top priority for Xavi Alonso. It will be interesting to see if he goes all in in the Bundesliga or if he will use the league to rest some of his key players.

I would not worry about going undefeated. I'd go for the cups. Seen it many times, going back decades. Once the league is won, games are lost in the league. I remember way back in 85, Everton were in two cup finals, won the league with five to play - just like Bayer L - had just gone 28 all competition games unbeaten with 24 wins (different times) - and then lost three of the four next league games
