The shield keeps you quite safe from explosions. You can stand in the center of the caretakers death explosion, and not go flying more than 1m out of shield. And while bulk detonators are still capable of killing you, the shield is big enough (without upgrades) that standing on the other side of it, or right on the edge, is far enough away from the bulk to live. (You don't have to lose ground to the bulk if you shield, unlike if you kite the bulk.) PLUS the bulk explosion fragment pods bounce off of the shield, which does technically reduce the blast range. I like the shield a lot. Edit: Shield does not reduce explosion damage.
@165 Yeah, I meant that it absorbs most the knockback. Probably could word it better, but it's also not an essay. I guess I could try having a bulk blow up IN the shield, and right next to it. But from my experience they never walk into the shield in an actual game, the damage is never CLOSE if you have a shield down. Especially since the bomb frags of the bulk detonator again, bounce off of the shield; not landing inside it. Edit: I tested it an yeah, bulks still kill you if you're in range, regardless of the shield. Nice, crassus detonator was the last creature I needed for my "get a kill on every creature with a pickaxe" quest that I put myself up to. If you ever want to do that yourself (for some reason) you have quite a headstart
Shame I made a separate, reset save file to do a melee (damage) only challenge. Can't even have bosco, so if i'm killed, i die Did you know base kit scout grapple is fast enough that, if you grapple from one side of a bulk to the other, straight through its attack zone, you make it unharmed? Haven't figured out killing one yet, and i think a nemesis would be actually impossible, even as driller (because, though axes are ranged melee damage weapons, you only get 8). Also fun fact: With Skull Crusher Ale, you can one shot a haz 3 grunt with a headshot, two hits with body shots. With the passive of See You In Hell, it's a one shot body shot.

Next hurdle is the caretaker, and I think I need the pickaxe power charge or pickaxe power damage beer for that fight Also not sure if I should allow having a Steeve or not since it’s technically meelee

I wish there were more melee build available. Even if just for a season event, being able to squash bugs with a mace or a huge ass hammer would be fucking dope
