I liked how Miss Kentucky started off her final answer with strong words like macro and micro, but then at the end I thought “so how do you suggest businesses to be environmentally conscious?” Because when you think of her answer it was just another “we can make changes in our daily lives” while it’s absolutely true, we’re past that point and need stronger ways to make a change.

Other than Miss Maryland, none of the walks were exciting. Since that was the same for all of the candidates, I felt the generic walks were a planned or requested thing. What I’m HOPING is that Miss USA will BRING the walk at Miss Universe because the other Miss Universe candidates most certainly will. Our Miss Universe will be a mystery as we’ve not seen much of her prior to the Miss USA pageant. I hope she’ll be far more prepared and visible than our previous Miss USA. There is already soooo much more press and hype surrounding the other Miss Universe candidates. I want to see a fabulous wardrobe, presence on performance from Elle. Being that she’ll be late to Israel, she could parlay that late arrival into moments that can highlight her. She has all it takes to be fierce. She just needs to unpack it and bring it.

Group discussion is a great addition. Would love to have the final 4 instead of the final 8 when announcing the winner (remind me of Miss World).
I totally agree with you regarding the video info of all delegates. I've refrained from watching any bio/information for the girls to avoid any bias.
My personal judgement is based on 3 categories; first impression (delegates introduction) and presentations for Swim/Athletic and Evening wear.

I do agree that MUSA2021 production can be improved. But it's understandable given its the 1st venture of the new director. As to the winner, Kentucky really sealed the deal in the Q&A. I like the format of the casual interview there we can really gauge who will shine in a group setting. But I also wish there is still a final question if they trim down the ladies to top 3. Elle's gown is fine with me as to the shoulder strap I think it's OK it gives an illusion of a broader shoulder which will also highlight that she has a thin waistline.

I do hope in this era, they will bring the pageant back to either being televised or just streamed through something more accessible! I really didn't like crowning. It was RUSHED and I like when they do a traditional top 5! Also you could see the pageant joy radiating off you in this video and it was contagious! :) I did miss getting to know the contestants. I obviously had done my research but for my fiance watching with me, I know he would have appreciated the bios. I don't miss video packages! Get rid of those!!! I commented on a past video how one of the years in the past, they each had a day on snapchat to take us around and we got to know them. As a humble former judge, coach and contestant I have watched this pageant with equal measures of enthusiasm and inspiration. I have watched winners come and go so I was not surprised but perhaps stunned that some of my faves (Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Ohio) did not do better in the placements or final rounds.
    1) OVERALL SELECTION: We only see what happens on stage but I have heard that prelim judging (swimwear and evening gown) took place before the Judge's interviews this year... a first! The judges had a chance to see the girls before actually forming an opinion about them, loving their looks or anything else - before forming an idea about who the next Miss USA will be. I LOVE this idea. A girl may have hype surrounding her and yet dissappoint when met face-to-face.
    2) CONTESTANTS: I already had Kentucky on my "Pageant Radar" from the moment she was crowned in her home State. But, I also adored Georgia because I knew of her from her days as an AU cheerleader and Pageant competitor. Loved Alabama too. First time a Woman of Color has carried the title since the 90's (She was a former student at Alabama State University who had competed at MAP three times). Others like Maryland, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kansas, and Ohio were also impressive but the cut was too deep to recover from. However, the training in Cancun and Texas paid off for both groups, Teen and Miss but Teen Florida was on fire from the word go!
    3) SWIMWEAR: Those SHOES! So happy not to see "Tippy Tops this year. They looked like the plexiglas ones I wore in the 80's when I modeled actively, Loved the variety of swimsuits and did anyone notice the fan blowing below them at the end of the stage? Hair fluttered, suits with ruffles flourished and everybody sparkled! Best Walks: Kentucky, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North and South Carolina and New Jersey.
    4) EVENINGWEAR: Spectacular! I have not seen such beautiful gowns in decades and many of them did not even make the cut to Top 16! Best Gown: UTAH!
SUMMARY: Nothing is more special than to see your winner on that National Stage. They are winners in every sense of the word from the moment they become a MISS USA Contender! When that proverbial "Bell" and the "Fight for the CROWN" begins, its all up to the girl who leaves the most last impression, from beginning to end.
DISAPPOINTMENT: the quality of the judges and commentators, the opening number quirks and the final announcement of the crowning was not explained since so much else had changed.
OVERALL: It was a good first attempt by the new head, Crystal Stewart!

Plus, this time, since it’s the first time they’ve done this, they got to hear/see how the first group did. I think that’s partly why the second group had better overall answers in general. 🤷‍♀️

I thought that South Carolina has a Miss Universe face, as well; she definitely relished the moments and had fun on stage soaking up the experience, but in the end perhaps more formal answers would've projected her higher in the placement. Louisiana has ties to the Chocktaw and Chappepeela tribes and not hearing her speak was a missed opportunity especially given the site location and some of the experiences the contestants had pertaining to indigenous people (I'm from Louisiana tho, so I'm biased in favor of Miss Louisiana(s). I do love that Asya had lots of camera time (she is so beautiful and she also had a great presence engaging with others). What I did not enjoy: The lighting was not flattering; The camera views were varied which I enjoyed but I wanted 2-3 seconds squarely on the face of each of top 16 (um, can we see what the contestants actually look like?) I thought the host was better suited for teen (too informal for me); I didn't enjoy Jah Rule (either time on stage)(perhaps I'm just old LOL); and I'm with you - announce the top 2 and let them face each other - in this case those two women are class acts and I would've appreciated their opportunity to share that lifetime moment. I could've appreciated a 5th place being awarded as well, they've worked that hard as it is. I do like awarding a Miss Congeniality too - our nation has forgotten how to be nice to each other. Regarding the top 16, they chose several women that look so much alike (the blonde hair, the same styling) that it made it difficult to have that standout moment (like SC's smile) and ultimately, I wonder if that's why there was only 1 in the top 8. But hey, at least there were blondes this time (it's been a very brunette affair in recent years except when Nebraska won). I appreciate your insights, Dani, and I love your channel. My perspectives go back to 1975 as a little boy when I cried when Summer Bartholomew (Miss USA) didn't win Universe LOLOL. We all cheer for Elle to have a safe (and winning) experience in Israel!!

Oh yes I do enjoy the opening discussion very much but i dont think the outfits change is necessary. I would’ve done it in a red carpet sort of set up (instead of the round table) so the girls still can wear their gowns. And agree with you regarding the winner announcement too. Even if they want to do what they did with top 8, they still could build suspense. They can actually copy Miss World, because that’s basically what they’re doing with the winner announcement and still have the suspense

When I met Crystle Stewart in person years ago, I thought she was an absolute powerhouse of a human being and wished more people would have a chance to know her. This production was all about Crystle in so many ways, and Elle is an IDEAL representative for Crystle's first winner - brilliant, beautiful, poised and present. She has Crystle's values in so many ways. So regardless of everything else that happened, the final result was perfection. And I happened to like a lot of everything else that happened. I did love seeing national costumes online and believe they could have enhanced the live production. I loved the interviews. I LOVED Zuri Hall - wow. Did not enjoy the music at all. That can change. Dani's reviews here are excellent though more could have been said about those who didn't make top 8. I thought Utah was excellent. I did not feel the same way about Kansas or South Dakota. Maryland seemed too 'aggressive' with her Girl Scouts reference and I agree that bringing it up a second time was a mistake. Texas was not credible talking about kindergarden and 1st grade as an effective, ideal in-school program. NC and IL summary comments were spot on. ND was outstanding. I was worried FL would win because I don't think she was ready for interview the way KY was. In fact, by the end, it wasn't close. But sometimes, the judges are the last to see that, even when the rest of the entire world does. So Crystle, again, selected the right judges to come up with the winner that the public saw.

    1. the, “girl chat” moment was awesome! i hope they continue that, and i hope that future contestants use it as an opportunity to BE THEMSELVES (relatively speaking). ky, md & nd were good at threading that needle.
    2. ky putting her hair up for finals also contributed to the straps of her dress not looking so heavy.
    3. what does one call the other 4 girls who didn’t place? are they just top 8? final 5? that format will take some getting used to.
    4. you went competition professor on the vid packages… it makes PERFECT sense, and makes me give a lil’ low key side eye to a couple recent miss usa’s & universe’s 👀 lol.

They only ones I felt that deserved the crown were Texas, Kentucky, and Maryland. These were the only three who felt ready for the competition coming up in two weeks.
However, I think Maryland would’ve been the best candidate.
Kentucky gives me Kara McCullough vibes and I think she’ll place just like how Kara did (Top 10). Good enough to advance to evening gown, but not good enough to break into that Top 5/6 USA has been struggling to achieve lately.
Meanwhile, Maryland’s walk has a lot of movement and spice. It can come off as over-performing at times but it’s generally fun to watch. Plus, she’s an excellent speaker too. She would’ve been USA’s best shot at entering the final round :/

The last 5 minutes was everything. I saw that producer magic at american idol where i watched the lady cut the camera guy off then dramatically act out how she wanted the girl to answer... As for budget , Kansas had no problems😂 girl friend had LED lights in her costume hand painted by a professional designer and a gown from the same collection as miss peru 2020.

I agree on the contestant bios and video packages. Those were not a part of the NBC/Trump era when I completed and not only do the “frame” contestants, it dragged out the top 16 announcements and took away from the actual competition. I felt like this was one of the best judged Miss USAs in a long time with that omission.

    1. Opening attire should have been different for the final.
    2. Contestants intros should include more info other than them saying their names and states.
    3. Swimsuits for the swimsuit competition should've been different for the final. Same sponsor but different style for the Top 16.
    4. Delighted that Top 16 competed in swimsuit and gown ... yay!!
    5. Delighted to see gowns from a variety of designers ... yay!!
    6. Delighted the Top 8 had an informal interview to relax them before them answering their selected judges questions. (KENTUCKY cemented her victory the moment she said - "From a macro and micro". And the way she formatted her response with a solution. Yes, she understood the assignment 👏🏾.
    7. Another change I would've added was a Top 4 and have them answer the same question. That's added pressure for sure and it adds more suspense. Also gives a perspective on how each women views a very specific topic differently or similarly.
    8. Delighted that there weren't video packages. I've worked in production for a long time and when it comes to pageantry, I've often said how these packages influence the judges scores. So it was refreshing to have that component eliminated.
    9. Choreography/production format for Miss USA should be different from Miss Teen USA for a multitude of reasons, especially since both events are on the same stage.
    10. I Loved the Host - she was on point. The co-host seemed a bit nervous.
    11. Delighted that men are back on the judging committee - yay! Although there should always be a former Miss USA on the judging panel. just a thought.
    12. North Dakota, Florida, and Illinois placing as runner-ups was not too surprising... I mean their faces were all stunning. Kentucky's face, energy, and overall presence was very well rounded. Overall the Top 8 was amazing an no surprises there. I was only saddened the Michigan didn't advance to Top 16.
    13. I believe the Crowns should be bigger and more elaborate than the newer tiaras for TEEN, USA, and UNIVERSE.
    14. The Miss USA and MISS UNIVERSE competitions should be held at least 3 to 4 months apart. Gives time to media and visibility in various capacities to promote delegates and build up anticipation for the excitement/interest of competitions.
    15. I'd like to see the judges scores be seen for the television audience - just for transparency during the Top 16. I know that's easier said than done though for a multitude of reasons.
    16. Dani - great post as always... keep them coming. Because #PageantMania is in full swing with so many competitions taking place within an 8 week span.
    Cheers 😘

AGREED!! I really disliked how they handled the crowning! The first runner up and 4th runner up had the same experience, there should be building suspense! For us it was like “shoot okay what 5 are left? Okay so they all either won or got nothing??” Super strange! I think Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina and Texas actually handled the round table discussion and questions the best. They shared the most personal examples that allowed us to get to know them so I was SHOOK with the final placements (other than Kentucky of course!) But I have to remind myself that it’s cumulative and the final decision isn’t based on the answers alone.

I know I'm late to the party, but I too really liked the new format. And they accomplished the "get to know" the contestants in a lot more normal and natural format than the video packages ever could. I kind of hope Miss America takes note! And yes, the announcement of the runners up and the winner was WAY too rushed. That has to be fixed for next year!

I’m glad they went all the way to Top 8 & one of them actually won! I said it before & I will say it again. If one of them wins Miss USA, then prepare to put USA in the Top 5 Miss Universe!
I’m surprised NY didn’t make it. Not actually surprised Nevada didn’t make it though.. His presence is more than enough to represent whatever he wants to convey.. At least the Org still chose a natural-born woman. Kuddos to the judges..
How I wished they still have the video packages for each contestant just to know them a little better..
I also don’t like the manner of announcement. I was hoping the Top 8 would still be cut to a Top 3 & have a common final question.. And then have a 2nd ru, 1ru & then the winner..
Congratulations Kentucky and USA for having a strong contender to Miss Universe this year!

I dont like how they announce the winners. It seems like the announcers does not have any energy. It is not exciting👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼 I am a big fan of the old system where they will announce 4th runner up, 3rd runner up, 2nd runner up, 1st runner up, and the new Miss USA is........... They also should bring back prizes such as a new car, jewelry, fur coats, etc.......
