I don't know if anyone has told you, but " 별 " - "byul" is Korean for "Star" so her name literally translates to "Moonstar" :) And yes, it was her singing and rapping. She is the main rapper, but also a sub-vocalist for Mamamoo.
A couple of years later, this is STILL one of THE COOLEST MV's I have seen, still one of my favorites.
Byul-yi really did so great here! Amazing what happens when a company finally allows their talent to do what they want to do instead of sticking them in a box and leaving them to rot.
You definitely have to react to Moonbyul's participation in the reality show "Second World", which she won, is a vocal battle reality show, in which rappers from various groups compete to show that they are also good vocalists.

The higher vocals/adlibs in the background are Seoho from Oneus and Yonghoon from Onewe (both RBW groups as well). Moonbyul is amazing!

Moonbyul is a great vocalist, see her winning song from Second World "Refuge" for example. However the high falsetto adlibs are from Seoho from Oneus and Yonghoon from Onewe. Mamamoo's two brother groups at RBW (strongly recommend both. All RBW groups are unusually vocally talented). I believe it was part of Moonbyul's desire to erase gender lines to have the really high parts done by male voices.
This song is about the struggles within herself, bright side vs dark side. She plays with words from her name Moonstar, 문 pronounce as (in korean it means “Door”) The backing vocal was done by Seoho (ONEUS) and Yonghoon(Onewe). She has a very broad discography from her solo albums, always surprise us. Last year alone she had 3 comebacks, all in different genre.
moonbyul is such an amazing artist. she always writes her own lyrics and produces music for other groups/artists as well. I strongly recommend Shutdown (Feat.Seori) it was magical. she actually is a trained vocalist so no surprises about her amazing vocals on here. she is also known as someone who doesn't want to see gender-norms pressing on art and artists. she talks about how music and art in general is genderless.

Moonbyul is one of the most talented, credited and diverse Kpop artists in the industry, she gives a different sound in every album and is so talented with different styles, she's really a fan favourite among moomoos and others.
She has a really broad discography. On the other end of the spectrum, she has light and upbeat songs like "Lunatic" and "Cheese in the Trap". Then there are her more quite ones. My favorites will always be "Absence" the performance video version, "Iljido" and "My moon". She also has a lot of great songs featuring other artists like the controversial "Shutdown", popular ones like "Selfish", and "G999". A lesser known one is "Lady" where she features in a song by Bumkey. She also has multiple duets with solar both under the tag of Mamamoo+ and not.
Moonbyul is a killer vocalist, but I do have to mention that the high note that was pointed out (along with a couple others) were actually done by her company juniors Seoho (Oneus - boy group) and Yonghoon (Onewe - band, like they actually play instruments). Moonbyul definitely can hold her own vocally, but the producers probably just wanted that contrast in the song. Strongly agree with others saying to check out Moonbyul’s vocal performances. :)
That said, RBW is full of insane vocalists. I highly recommend checking out their other groups too. Yonghoon’s high notes ALWAYS give me the chills. The bands lyrics are also BEAUITFUL. Many of their songs are very lyrically-driven. And Oneus as a group have some amazingly theatric MVs.
If you want to see more of her vocal range, i recommend her Second World stages (specially Congratulations - an upbeat song - and Refuge - a ballad, yep, she can belt too), it's a vocal competition for rappers that took place last year (and she won haha)
If you continue your Mamamoo journey, you will discover that Moonbyul is the chameleon of Mamamoo. In this video and song she is the street rapper and hip hop chick vibes. In her collaboration with Seori, she is a woman in love with another woman and sings a beautiful duet. In her song Lunatic, you get a great pop song which is very catchy. With Cheese In The Trap, you have an angst teenage girl song, think Avril Lavigne. There is further solo material from Moonbyul, so you have a fascinating journey ahead of you.
the high voice and the low growling voice in the background are actually done by two members of oneus but she can definitely pull that off if she wanted to. you should check out her cover of refuge by psy🔥it's one of the best vocal performances i've seen ever😍

The credits for the song don't have a feature but do have chorus listed as Park Seong -guk, Lee Seo-ho, and Jin Yong-hoon. I don't know Seong-guk but Seo-ho is the main vocalist from Oneus and Yong-hoon is the main vocalist from Onewe. Both are known for their ability to hit really high notes. Oneus and Onewe are brother groups to Mamamoo at RBW.
Moonbyul is one of the women in S Korea who has written the most songs! I believe she has over 110 songs credited to her. She is so talented!

This is my favorite from Moonbyul and Absence is a close second. If you look up their current My Con concert world your videos you will see Hwasa doing this song because during the concert, each member wears the outfit and does a solo of one of the other members, then they do 4 solos but as the full group. Yeah, All 4 women are successful soloists. Basically, you get mamamoo vocals and performance where it is 1 member, 2 or all 4 and the can and do sing each others songs. Hwasa's I'm a B is my favorite of hers, Water Color is my favorite from Wheein and I am a totally in the Solar System for my bias so I love everything from Solar, my suggestion for her is to watch the Face album live performance and get all 5 of her songs. Honey MV is from the album and is worth watching. they all have 2 solo albums out, so Solar really has 1 song and some covers from her Solar's Emotion project, songs that will make you cry. The Mamamoo+ is a subgroup of Solar and Moonbyul together and their latest mini album and MVs are incredibly good, Chico Malo, GGBB and LLL. If you see songs from the Angel line, like the song Angel, that is Solar and Wheein and the Rapper Line is Hwasa and Moonbyul.
Oh yeah, she is phenomenal. Still, I feel obsessed with her songs too. Her songs are just masterpieces. Thank you so much for this.

I think most would agree this is one of her best. She is a full blown rock idol here. When she does this on live stages,... it CRUSHES!!!!
The MAMAMOO members are among some of the most-credited idols in K-Pop as of 2023
- Moonbyul actually has the most songwriting credits of all 3rd generation female idols at 111(2nd most credited famale artist overall... Yoon Mirae at 139), since she writes her own raps(and more) in almost all of the group’s songs.
- Solar has 37 credits to her name. She wrote the lyrics and composition for her solo song, “Spit it Out”. Composer on "Honey".
- Hwasa has 44 credits. The lyrics to her solo song, “María”, were praised for its inventive and meaningful wordplay. ("Somebody" w/Loco).
- Wheein has 9 credits (that I can find, maybe more)
All of her solo work is amazing! Aside from “Eclipse”, “Shutdown “ and “Snow” are my absolute favorite from her ❤she’s vocally amazing and we definitely don’t hear enough of her range outside of rapping

Yes, that was all Moonbyul! She also writes, produces, composers, directs, etc. She currently holds the record for the most credited female artist in all of Korean music! She is an ace!

I believe Moonbyul was originally a singer. All four of the Mamamoo members are great singers so when they were formed Moonbyul was assigned the rapper role, most probably because of her voice that's lower than the other three and also because they need someone to fill up that role. But dang, she really kills it.
One other thing I wish they would do is give the center of the stage to Moonbyul when it comes to the dancing part because she's the main dancer but I've never seen her take the lead in any of their MVs
