A game I would bring back is telltale poker 1&2 but if I had to pick one it would be Friday the 13th. I never cared to play the game but I love the gameplay. The love and passion from this game. Showing anyone who loves horror or Friday the thirteenth knew This was your game to play. R.I.P.
To clarify things, even though we've both been saying "stop killing games", it's just a coincidence. I had the domain registered back in January. I think we both have a similar diagnosis on the issue, but different prescriptions. Also to play devil's advocate, SOME games can actually be a lot of work to transition to run without the company server, but this is also an entirely preventable situation. Most of my effort is trying to stop future games from being destroyed, where this can be fixed from the design phase. Anyway, I'm glad people are sick of this problem completely independently of what I'm doing.
Awesome to hear more people talking about these. Ross Scott of Accursed Farms just started a global campaign to bring legal action against it, particularly against Ubisoft for their shutdown of The Crew.
I really hope he gets some important eyes on it!

Nice video. About the point about how there's nothing we can do.. I'm sure you've heard of Ross Scott and his push to stop games from being destroyed. His campaign has officially started as of yesterday and I think it's worth bringing up to you that this is our best shot to stop one of the worst trends in the industry.
I came across him while working on this video actually, very exciting stuff he's doing. Hopefully it works out.
The Cycle: Frontier. Man...I LOVED that game. I was totally brokenhearted when they murdered it.
I wish I'd played more of it. I enjoyed what I played but the game's audience was pretty small and I couldn't really get anyone to play :(

Bioware gave me nth degree burns from this. I have no hope for Dreadwolf.

as bad as a lot of publisher practices are, the fans are at least very vocal. I couldn't imagine a situation with film, music, tv or most products where mass outrage is garnered over something on the level of that one scott pilgrim game.
I played the shit out of Anthem back in the day. I was always hopeful as to what the game could become. However, I realized before the 2.0 announcement that there was a problem. The community.
The people that loved the game HATED criticism and defended nearly every bad desicion the devs would make. Thus all the relevant forums became echo chambers and circle jerks. The devs saw the comminuty be so favorable towards them that they must have decided they were doing a good job.
This issue relates to an interesting story; back when loot drops were being rebalanced. For a breif, maybe 4 hour window, the loot drops were FANTASTIC. No you weren't given everything you didn't work for, but you were actually rewarded for your efforts. Anthem devs reversed that change and said it would take MONTHS OR EVEN YEARS to figure out loot balancing.
You'd imagine the devs would see the forums of people saying how fun the game was when it was actually rewarding. That despite the game being in a rough spot, earning rewards at a more reasonable rate really helped the game be more enjoyable. NOPE. Under every single post relating to better loot drops, there were several people claiming "you just want something without working for it" or some other BS. And so loot balancing never improved as devs saw no reason for a more drastic change.
So what did the devs do? Double down and stop regular communication. A TERRIBLE sign. I remember telling people that's the worst thing a company can do and the games days are numbered. Month or two later and I was right.
If I have to pinepoint the one crucial error with Anthem its that no one involved had any balls. No one took the reigns and guided the team with a solid vision of what the game was meant to be. That is what truly killed Anthem.

Publishers should be legally banned from interference in the development process or decisions. Penaltys should be relinquishing the IP to the devs at the publishers expense

I feel like the lawsuit case between the F13 writers (Cunningham and Miller) killed the game. No new content could be made during the law suit and I think the company didn’t want to chance anything. (Miller won the case btw)
It had a huge impact on it for sure. The game always had a pretty low playerbase, but the lack of consistent content didn't help draw in any crowds.
devs even had plans to bring stage 2 to consoles but 2k gutted trs b4 those could happen now there are hints they are working on an b4b2 which first game which was hindered by region lock stopping players from playing the game in lesser populated areas the mnetization was all on take 2 and 2k not trs

there are alot like knockout city player retentionn was to low after f2p launch cuz ea made it free for 2 weeks at launch then you had to buy it to keep playing and a free till level 25 which you can get really fast ruined it and hyper scapes ubisofts advanced movement br which was just outright neglected and left to die after 1 balance patch after season 3 then servers were shutdown despite many still playing daily week after shutdown accounced the most popular mode tdm was gone with no word from ubisoft at all the game shined as an arena shooter not so much as an br devs were pulled off months post launch and years of content were scrapped to

2k did finally randomly trun on the evolve stage 2 servers last with 0 notice then few months later we got news fee truned back on with an coming soon and promise of future support with an we didnt expect the sudden intrest in evolve when theres been a dedicated communitey for years ever since shutdown and it was shutdown again in 2023 and a broken promise like 2k just tried to kill the communitey
With your statements about Anthem, this doesn't seem like a particularly well researched video. I agree with your overall point, but it feels driven by vibes more than anything else, especially when you call converting a game to offline and single player a simple solution. In some cases that is actually impossible with how much of the game can be stored server side.

I don't think it's just greed. Companies seek benefits; shareholders want more, and they do not even care about the product: it can be cars, oil or, as in the case of videogames, artistic products. They just want their investment to be really productive, to make the most money possible (money doesn't make money; work does, btw). The problem lies on how the industry works.
