My Homemade "Laser Taser" Pistol with pulsed YAG laser and High Voltage Head!!!

The heart of this bad boy is a pulsed Nd:YAG laser from an old Isreali military rangefinder, which is pumped by a flashlamp and has peak powers of several thousand watts (even though only for a short time). I also added a high voltage generator to make it a little bit scarier.
I should mention that a project like this should NOT be attempted at home! The funny thing is that the taser unit of the gun wouldn't kill me if I got hit (which I have..) but the capacitor bank for the pulsed laser could easily stop my heart. High voltage is not to be messed with by the inexperienced tinkerer, and attempting HV projects at home without much electronics experience is a good way to end up dead on the floor.
On a lighter note, be on the lookout for more vids! The laser bazooka was put on the backburner for a bit due to some issues with my diode banks, but the final product is in sight!

the U. S. government already has all the crap u've ever seen in a Star Wars or Star Trek movie, they just let it out to market on their schedule to suit their money making goals n agenda. Besides, if it became known that our technological superiority was vastly superior to say-china, they'd go apeshit demanding access to it n probably use it as an excuse to start a war.
You need to build a lightning gun. Have a laser ionize the air, then simultaneously you have an electrode with a ton of voltage behind it and it will jump to and travel down the ionized air to the target, as long as it's grounded.
There is some defense company building such a device now.
+revtune I think he was trying that because he specifically mentioned the laser wasn't powerful enough to ionize the air. If it was we would have a lightning gun video from him.

High school physics classes must seem boring as hell to you lol..
Physics was actually my favorite class by far in high school! All of the calculations that I used to build the gun were simple physics formulas, like energy of my capacitor bank, peak power of the laser pulse, and inductance of my coils.

Serious idea to consider: There are new ceramic batteries that are literally thinner than a credit card. Perhaps a pistol-sized pulse laser with the ceramic batteries feeding into the handle like a Glock mag, maybe with the size of a 17-round mag, and, hopefully, enough energy delivery do be useful as a defensive weapon?
Bonus points if you make it look like a WH40K laspistol or a Fallout laser pistol.

Lasers have been a hobby of mine for a long time and I learned a bunch from my projects. I finished a chemistry degree a few months ago, and I just started working on a PhD in optics a couple weeks ago!

Uh no, actually. I paid for every part you see in my vids, even going back ten years. I also paid for every dime of my college education. CZcams is not my only source of income...in my teens I worked residential construction during the summer and the past few years I worked in a research lab.

Why aren't things like this guy makes, being made my professionals. This guy has come a lot further in laser weaponry then I seem to be able to find anywhere else. Of coarse that's not necessarily the goal, but with some modifications, these types of things will be little short of being strait out of Star Wars.

My daughter got the your baby can read program when she was 1 day old. She is now 8 years old and literally at the top for her grade in the whole school district! This project needs to be expanded upon. You have something very interesting here. Any way to get your hands on an ionizing femtosecond pulse laser and increase the range to 2-3 meters? I'm thinking the portable power source would need to be quite large, so backpack needed. Stay safe and good luck. Your videos are great!

Cool stuff. Keep it coming. Have to love the guy that corrected your assumption the Hebrew meant high voltage by confirming you were correct. The way the strobes work is interesting. Seems like some potential there. Adding the caps like you did for one. One thing though....with saws and cutting you want to measure twice and cut once...lol, at least you are not afraid to show you mishaps but some day might be a much more expensive one. Just an idea.

Couldn't a laser be used to create an ion channel in the air, which you could then send TASER current down? I had heard that DARPA was experimenting with a TASER that used laser-generated ion channels instead of physical wires, and if that's true, it would be awesome to see you make one.

Hmm, I'd thought when I saw the description of this video that this'd be about a taser that works at range by ionizing the air and running current through the ionized air. Even though this wasn't what I thought it'd be, I'm still glad I saw this; I had no idea it was possible to cobble together an actual laser weapon with scrounged parts like this!

It started as a hobby but it slowly transformed into a career over the years. As a kid I was always taking things apart and working on DIY science projects but I never knew what I wanted to do for a career. In fact I almost finished college before I finally settled on a career path, but now I'm gonna start working on my PhD in Optics in a couple months. :) Careers in science and engineering will always be in demand and are great for creative people that like to build things!

Mt company uses this same idea to remove corrosion from valve bodies. It produces a wider beam and is much faster. It uses a welding power supply, plugged into a 480v outles.
