  • FULL BOOSTED DYNO RESULTS. WHY WE LOVE VTEC. LOW $, CXRACING TURBO KIT. WE CALL IT BTEC? Non-VTEC motors need love too! Check out this test where we add boost to a non-VTEC B18A/B Integra. WE ALLKNOW THE VTEC MOTORS RESPOND WELLTO BOOST, BUT WHAT ABOUT NON VETEC MOTORS? Will the Non-VTEC motors respond well to low-buck boost? THE ONLYTHING BETTER THAN BOOST IS LOW-BUCK BOOST. What else is necessary besides the turbo kit to make boost work? Why does everyone secretly wish their motor had VTEC?

    The .63ar turbine seems to be the most popular, I ran a Turbonetics t3t4 .63 on my first turbo build. I really didn't like how late it spooled (4500 rpm) it was like a switch. I'm running a .48ar now and it will make 16psi at 2500 (if you want). It is definitely limited to the 270-300 whp range but I love how responsive it is. This is on a stock rod and piston b18b1 with head studs and its been boosted for about 5 years! Love it!

      @Mattvardaman Před 4 lety +1

      @@Ws6Ms It was straight forward. I've been reading and researching for the last year. I had the heads rebuilt, swapped in new rocker arms with trunnion upgrade, and new push-rods. Also replaced the lifters and buckets while the heads were off. So going for the cam swap was a no brainer. The first startup scared me as it ran really rough for a few minutes then leveled out.

      fiendwithout I don’t have much advice to offer, I’m going to a local tuner to get a “street tune” in the next few weeks. They are a GM and Vette specialty tuning shop. The timing at idle is hunting a little on my truck but it’s drivable and doesn’t die at quick stops. I’ll end up with hp tuners this summer, but need it tuned quicker than I could become proficient at tuning. I have a comprehensive scan tool and have been watching how the pcm is trying to maintain idle rpm.

    Another great video Richard!
    How about testing flywheel hp vs wheel horsepower on various power levels? Take a combo run at multiple power levels on the engine dyno and run those same combos in a vehicle. The old 15% for manual and 20% for auto power loss just doesn't make sense because if a drivetrain was sucking up 20% of 1200 crank hp that would be an astronomical amount of heat generated inside a transmission or rear end. I feel like it takes a certain amount of the power to turn the components but the majority of the loss is fixed. I could see a small amount of loss that increases with power because of the effect of inertia when making more power because the rate speed of the rpm sweep is higher.

  • @timothybayliss6680

    Love the test, it's nice to see what a little bit can do to wake up these underrated power plants. My buddy had a 2nd gen crx with a b18b and an ihi gm8 turbo. It's what we had and we made it work. It only really ran well at full throttle but it was mental fast, this was 15 years ago.
    This turbo looks strange, the boost curve where it doesn't come up to full boost by 5k, even 7psi at 4k looks pretty slow to me. I know inertial dynos don't entirely represent road loading, but the compressor looks oversized or the exhaust oversized or both for this combo. It looks like it would work way better on a bigger engine.
    I know it came as part of a kit, but a 45trim T04e with a .48 turbine still gives you some overhead on flow. The smaller turbine will definitely help spool.
    That turbo actually looks really good for a vtec b18, you can shift it way higher, and the slog up to boost wouldn't be nearly as noticeable because of the different gearing the b18c cars have and the engine would stay in boost after a shift.
    Thanks for the test, real world examples like this give good information

  • @Jubr123
    @Jubr123 Před 4 lety +1

    I know these test made are maybe ”couple” of years old, but gives at least for me a good baseline.
    Where I get to improvements:
    Long tube turbo header (equal length would be the best)
    With a good quality merge collector (venturi collector would be that)
    With a short tube after the collector and before turbo flange, would made possible to use even smaller turbine/housing for earlier spool up at lower rpm, widening the useful powerband and minimizing backpressure, and would even flow more on top rpm’s.
    The engine would (probably) make more power on less boost too, as we can learn on many todays tuners tests too.
    I’ve been arguing at these topics from the years of being at the “tech school” at 2005 with a simple manner of approach saying
    “you can cram all the air to the engine, but you need to get it out from there too, that’s called the effiency of the turbo system, as the usual manifolds and turbine housings are restricting flow”
    And when ever I was referring a mechanical charger systems better on that spot and any else, the teachers kicked me out of the classroom, cause I was disturbing the “teaching” when the real reasons were that they’re couldn’t argue with me atleast a way they would be right on those topics.
    So I naturally stopped that “school”, as they could not teach me, when I was teaching them. And it was so sad cause one teacher had worked on top fuel dragster team’s mechanic, and I really thought that atleast him would notice the facts. But no, he was all in the turbos, with learning material from the 80’s with Saabs turbo system which was the notorious “3000rpm turbo kick and pulling stops at the 5500rpm” as I owned one myself and drove severals. 😁
    So I can see all the “problems” at this setup just from the dyno curves.
    And I sure know many people won’t maybe agree with me, but yeah, I’m all in the flow of engine type guy, so these are just facts on my “books” 😊

    great real world test. I guess the only thing this really highlights about the cheap turbo kits is how long they take to build full boost. Not seeing full boost to past 5000RPM is not really ideal.
    Back in the day (and event today) this would be a good and driveable combo. The advantage with a more gradual rising boost curve is more predictable power delivery.

    Just put some VTEC killer cams in or maybe a little less extreme lobe with a 8650-8800rpm max limit before it starts to drop off. I think VTEC killer cams can go above 9000rpms. But they're obnoxiously loud. A little less lobe would quiet it down a bit but you'd still be in VTEC all the time. And a smaller cam killer lobe would have a lot better drivability at lower RPM's. But a nice turbo would make a great equalizer.

They shipped an Impala (I think) to Japan and made some cvcc heads for it and it made more power and got way better emission control and fuel economy without using a catalytic converter, all because the head guy at GM said what Honda was doing would only work on small motorcycle type engines, not big V8s,so they did it to prove him wrong.

It's their casting of a LS block with 4 valve heads. Their bigger engine is based off a BBC with DOHC but I thing it has altered bore spacing and decking.

      B18b is 81mm bore.
      B20 is 84mm bore.
      If you have a b20 marked block with 81mm bore, it has been sleeved.

    I had hoped that when Fiat bought Chrysler, that the Hemi would be getting MultiAir.
    But, that didn't happen.

      If HEMI had DOHC then you can give it Multi-Air, but it does not. plus V8 enthusiasts mostly remove the VVT on their engines anyway.

      Ryan LaBlue you just need nitrous. I ran a 125 dry shot into a 3.1 in a 96 Cutlass. I retarded the timing 4 degrees and that was it. I put it on at 150,000 miles. The transmission blew 9 months later at 182,000 miles and that is running every weekend at the strip and playing on the street too. If you put your nitrous nozzle before your mass airflow sensor and oxygen sensor the engine will add extra fuel. Just run a good or new fuel pump to make sure it supplies the fuel. A factory computer and tune and fuel injectors will only provide so much extra. This was on a 96 car so computers were a little different back then. Now these days the computers will only let in more fuel if it's program too.

      Not entirely. They have different rod/stroke ratios. The b18a1 has 10 less hp less tq and found Im obd0 or obd1 where as the b1 is obd1 and obd2. The b18b1 also revs a tad bit higher.. Granted it's not a huge difference but if it says b18a1 in the title I expect to see a b18a1.
