  • I was delighted to get a call from 111 Montgomery to do a houseplant home makeover for one of their new units. However, this wasn't just any old houseplant makeover. The challenge was two-fold: furnish the entire apartment for $5,000 and make it feel as if it were your own; but also-try to bring in green in an apartment with very little light. Considering that many of us have the challenge of lower light areas in the home, I figured this would be a fun challenge to pursue.
This special Houseplant Home Makeover is brought to you courtesy of my three sponsors: Espoma Organic, Chelsea Garden Center, and 111 Montgomery.

I can't believe she took that depressing, dark, grey looking apartment and made it actually look bright and cheerful and cozy. The colors are gorgeous and brighten it and make it pop. The dried flowers add great texture and beautiful color. I also couldn't believe how many plants she fit in that tiny space. Bravo, job well done. She worked a miracle in what was a sad little box. It looks like a home now.

Nothing to do with you, but this reminds me of my issues with developers not really taking into consideration of the people who will live there. That range cooktop stove is way too large for that space I'd rather have more countertop space, and some Hardware to hang some tools and a bar to hang towels. Also those cabinets needs Hardware since at that color they all get dirty really easy. That bathroom is not really designed for its space either. No storage and partial wet bathroom are a no-go. You definitely had a challenge and you delivered

The men I have around me always seem to be so precise about the function of whatever they are designing meanwhile the women throw things together however with the idea in the back of their mind that adding accents they feel make a space cute will cover up the lack of functionality. Depends on who you know and work with especially if you are in the field of architecture yourself... There are talented people of both genders... When architecture is your whole job and typically also your life, I’m not sure you can generalize men in architecture to men who don’t care about their living space and throw things together. I don’t understand why you didn’t use any mirrors knowing how they bring in more light as well as to make the space appear larger and less cramped. Mirror tiles would have looked great on the headboard of the Murphy bed to show when opened. Or a mirrored wall would really open up the room or even in the bathroom. I really enjoyed your presentation and must say that your attitude of caring about the person who was going to live there enough to use special little touches here and there to bring a homey atmosphere into the apartment. I’m not a minimalist but I feel like in small apartments like this, a few chunkier items, or small items grouped together would look nicer. The many tiny pieces all over against white walls makes the place look too messy.

My first thought as well. The colors are lovely but initial impression just screams CLUTTER! If the resident “loves to cook” keep the counters clear so she can do that. A small plant by the sink, herb box on the sill, but all the rest... plants, books, knick-knacks, it’s overwhelming. Every inch of floor space is home to a plant when in fact the resident may need a pet bed or litter box, a storage cube for shoes or a basket for blankets. This small studio is designed for plants to live in it, not real people. Sorry, as I’m not wanting to come off mean-spirited but this is $5K misspent. “Less is more” would have achieved twice the impact at half the cost. Just my opinion.

@@NYCBrat It is literally just showing how you can fill the space... If somebody cannot imagine that they can replace a floor plant with a cat box inside an end table then place the plant on top of that table... They proudly need to not live in NYC in a space this size.

I love houseplants, and I think you nailed it on the plant choices. In April 2020, I moved into a 1 bedroom apartment that has 2 large windows, one in the bedroom, and the other in the livingroom. It gets only a few hours of light in the morning time. I took a chance 2 weeks ago, and bought 2 fiddlehead figs that are over 2 feet tall. I know they require lots of light and warmth, so I watered them with a hydrogen peroxide and water mixture, and put about an inch of sand on top of the soil, to protect them from fungus gnats. I did that with my other houseplants as well. I thoroughly sprayed them with a neem oil product and placed them under my tripod floor lamp. I spray the neem oil on them every other day or so now. One plant has grown 2 new leaves, adding almost a foot to its height, and the other plant is starting to grow a new leaf. They seem to be happy in my new home, along with the tall, bushy Pachira, Zzz plant and Dracaena, which are thriving as well.

What a great concept of making over a place focusing on the plants! Love the use of jewel tones to brighten up this darkish and bland space. So glad you did not choose that couch. It kills the space a bit despite the beautiful throw pillows and accents you used. Alina's art piece is a great statement piece but not a fan of any of the other wall art which doesn't say anything and is blobbish and lacks any detail. Love what you demonstrated with the preserved moss, the grow lights and herb garden and the repotting of the plants. Love the bedspread and its pillows. Thanks for sharing your expertise! Well done! What I love about the space is that you've taken into account the fact that it's so small. That being the case, filling it up with too many plants (though we love them!) would have made it an impractical space. Oh! It has personality now! A real warmth. And I don't think it would alienate a prospective male tenant either. Anyone would be able to visualise the space as their own.

I love the pick tones along with the teals and textures in the pots and the bath rug, so many elements that just have a homey feel, along with the plants you chose that tie it all together, I love a little green in a space. For not having a lot of light I think the things you used to bring in more light just fit it so beautifully. Leaving the murphy bed down does give it a more homey vibe. I just don't think I could come up with a better plan for this space, it's modern with a little boho . I love Hoya and I think they will give the apartment such a good feeling.
