Awesome Floppy Drive Replacement GOEX - not GOTEK! for Commodore Amiga 500 / 600 / 1200

- The GOEX "On Pills" is an awesome floppy drive replacement for the Commodore Amiga 500 / 600/ 1200 that lets you load ADF files on a real Amiga via an SD card. What makes it different than the popular GOTEK drive is that it is designed specifically for the Amiga 500 / 600/ 1200. It comes with a pre-installed mounting bracket that makes it very easy to securely install. It also comes pre-installed with the Flash Floppy firmware for Amiga. It has and optional OLED display, a jog wheel, speaker, and LED status light. There are a SD card and USB versions as well as the "On Pills" version that comes in black and can be controlled with your keyboard and can display on your monitor.

Great to see a new video from you sir! Beautifully shot too 👍🕹️
Your friend in retro, Perifractic
Cheers Perifractic. I really appreciate that. Means a lot. Keep up all the great work at Retro Recipes. Awesome channel you have there. Thanks for doing awesome things for the retro community!
@@TheGuruMeditation Thanks! We're lucky to work in such a cool community 😊
Ordered one with the OLED screen before the video was over 😂
Ha ha, nice! You are fast!
Wow. I just had a conversation with someone about what was missing from the GOTEK drives a few days ago. Looks like the GOEX has it all.
Yeah I am really happy with this solution
Nice to see alternatives out there.
For me the ultimate mix would be the ability to have the original DF0 mechanical drive and have the GOEX in an external mount with Amiga styling applied to the case (like GVP used to produce). The external case would have a switch to move between the mechanic drive and the GOEX as DF0.
Keep up the good reviews💻👍
Thanks! You actually can do that. There is a DF0/DF1 switch that you can attach to the Even CIA chip to let you switch the internal drive and the external drive respectively. That would be a cool setup
What a nice option! I like that it is designed from the ground up for the Amiga. I have two GoTek drives, but I may need one of these anyways...
It is super cool Doug! And I agree. Designing it for the Amiga makes it nice and easy to install without having to take apart a GoTek and put it in a 3d printed tray etc...
Amiga Bill: Nobody does it better.
Aw, you are too kind Brad. I really appreciate your support bud!
Good review. It's a pity the GOEX is so beautifully crafted from unobtainium! Thanks for uploading.
I didn't know The Flash was an Amiga aficionado. Cool.
As someone that spent ages literally hacking into a Gotek's casing to make it fit inside an A600 as stealthily as possible without damaging the A600's case, I wish I'd heard about the GOEX earlier!
(yes I know there are 3D printed internal mounts for Goteks and Amigas... but I don't have a 3D printer and I already had the Gotek on hand)
I agree. This is a really nice easy solution. I have gone through 3 different GoTek solutions and I like this GOEX better than any of those solutions
Darn, bought a gotek 2 months ago and put it in an external case and use a df0 selector. This is much more convenient and looks pretty slick.
It is cool, but your setup is nice as well. I need to install a DF0/1 switcher too
Ordered one directly :) Better to do this instead of ordering later and there is non to get your hands on :)
Enjoy! I don't think they were expecting all these orders all of a sudden, ha ha. I hope you don't have to wait too ling for it
Great presentation as always Bill.
Thanks so much Stuart!
This is a great device, because it doesn't pretend to be an old drive, and aesthetically fits much nicer into the older systems. Great review. I'd love to see you post more videos, they're always informative and entertaining!
thank you mate from NZ, subscribed and thumbs up, i always hated the Gotex drive mods with it sticking out ruining the look of the Amiga 500, this is so much better.
I agree. I have seen some hack job and I don't like the large dial I have seen on many of them.
Unbelievable, my Ami1200 in ancient days had a 40 MEGABYTE harddrive, and was top notch. Nice, that there are freaks making new tech for this beautiful machines
ha ha, I know! So you had the A1200HD40. I have that one too. Very cool. And yeah, it is amazing that folks are making new hardware like this for our old machines. So cool!
Excellent hardware addition for the Amiga.
Thank you for the "heads up" video.
My pleasure Alex!
Great video, Bill. A really clear and concise installation procedure. Thanks for the 'subtle' feature and the music sounded great. You've got the coolest 𝑨𝑴𝑰𝑮𝑨 out there!
Ha ha cheers Artstate. The Future Sound was the 2nd thing I booted up with the GOEX after the Xmas Megamix
Done, ordered. Thanks Bill. Been meaning to get a Gotek for a while but the fit into the case always put me off, this looks perfect.
Cheers Ambient! Enjoy. It make a while to get it, but it is worth the wait. I think mine took about a month to come. He may build then on demand, I am not sure
This looks like a perfect solution! Thanks for the video.
Cheers owl! I am looking forward to that Floppy Drive adapter for the MiSTer too!
For those Atari ST owners out there, please note that this company also makes this Floppy Drive SD Card replacement module for your ST as well as a bunch of SUPER cool ST adapters and accessories (ie. an ST monitor out to VGA adapter with a switch for LOW or HIGH resolutions)
I should have mentioned that. Actually it is an Atari ST friend RectaPete who turned me on to this.
so nice its made to fit, and the jog wheel seems nice
Yeah the jog wheel is cool. It works great and is low profile so nothing is sticking out of the side of the Amiga
I think I need to give one of these a try. Maybe in my new abandoned Amiga 500 project.
Beautifully produced video. Certainly something to aspire to. Keep up the great content Bill
Aw, man thanks for the very kind words Retro32. It means a lot to me.
Really cool, thanks Bill.
My pleasure Stephen, thank you and congrats on the Kickstarter!
I fitted one of these to my A600. It's a very simple install and fits perfectly. Works great.
Nice! I really like it too. I am glad to hear others enjoying it as well.
Awesome video, AmigaBill! That big box version of Wiz looks incredible, I wish it was like that in the first run. I still don't have a floppy emulator for any of my Amigas but I really like the look of this one, maybe I'll finally get one!
Thanks Cammy! Yeah the boxed edition of Wiz is awesome! And I didn't even realize it had the purple sparkles inside until yesterday's stream! So far this GOEX is my favorite floppy drive replacement. Great design and it feels right.
Wow a simple but great improvement to the GoTek, and never wanted to cut my A1200 or A500 so now a must purchase....ordering now!!
Nice! Enjoy Jawolf!
Nice one Bill - ordered one to replace my Gotek :)
Cheers. Enjoy John!
Awesome! I'm gonna get one. :)
Great video, thanks for sharing this gem.
Thanks so much for the kind words! Appreciate it!
Thank Bill. Looks awesome, just ordered one :)
Cheers Threepwood! Enjoy!
Bonne année à toi, la Blatte intergalactique ! Tu devrais repasser sur les forums retro francophones à l'occasion ;) Cheers!
I've purchased one - on back order. It will be interesting to see when they actually ship. Though in these times, we've all got to learn patience!
I hear you. I am still waiting for things I ordered in October :-(
Did you get it?
@@spawnterror I sure did. End of February if I remember correctly.
Very nice, adding SDCard support for FlashFloppy was my suggestion but this is the first time I have seen it used. Cool.
Yeah, I really like using the SD card. They are cheap, and low profile
@Mr Guru Oh neat. Thanks for the info!
I need to purchase that GOEX drive!!
They are cool!
available on back order, Great Scott! I need more patience... or a flux capacitor.
Ha ha. Don't worry, they will make more
Nice! Seems like something worth purchasing!
I am really enjoying mine. Money well spent for me.
Wow Bill, another great video dude.
Fretter!!! My man! Hope all is well! Miss you bud. Happy new year and thanks for the kind words.
Great video. Like a lot of people I already have a Gotek with led buzzer and potentiometer so not in a rush buy one of these. That said if/when I'm next in the market for a floppy drive replacement based on your review this is the one I'll get!
That makes sense. There are other good solutions out there and if you are already set up you are good to go. But this makes it super easy when starting from scratch.
Thanks Bill, you're amazing 👍
Received mine in the post today!
NICE! Enjoy and let me know how it goes
@@TheGuruMeditation finally got my Amiga CD32 style a1200 case in the post today (still waiting on those caps) . Installed the Goex and works great. Your video really helped. Didn’t have too much trouble adjusting for the case.
It sounds really cool
Thanks! It is a cool product!
very alternative to Gotek! this GOEX, with sdcard/USB. And the display? great invention.
Thx to bring this video Bill ;)
And.... #AmigaForever
You are welcome Giro! Great to see you here on CZcams!
@@TheGuruMeditation Thx mate! you're welcome too ;)
Thanks for the video. I'm sending my 600 off soon for a recap, and was going to have a gotek and speaker mod installed. I think I'll go for this instead!
Yeah, I really like this GOEX a lot. and you can get the 3D printed OLED mount in the proper color for your 600 if it isn't black like my A1200
I love my Gotek on my amiga 500, but this just looks so slick with the tiny display. I think it is time for an upgrade!
I am really enjoying mine. I hear there is a new GoTek as well. I have to look into that
That does look awesome.
It is sweet!
Purchased this drive months ago for my A1200, also got the pills upgrade later. The idea is great and no one had to butcher their case. But the additional soldering is a bit pain in the a** ... Anyway, it works. If you can, make a short video for the soldering part - I think, it would be a nice service
Thanks for sharing your story. I am glad you are enjoying it with the OSD. Maybe I will do that. I didn't realize you had to solder when I ordered the "On Pills" But I am thinking about doing it.
It would be nice to see what the on-screen disk selection looks like, but very good video. Thanks.
Yeah, I probably should have showed that, but I honestly haven't done it yet myself.
Awesome video, Thank you!
Thanks for the kind words Chris
Now this looks absolutely brilliant! I’m tired of hacking Goteks and cases to make them fit then messing around with firmware. Very nice indeed!
I hear you. I usually just used the GOTEK externally so i didn't have to worry about mounting it and could easily access the controls. This is a cool way to do it
@@TheGuruMeditation the worst case I found for fitting a Gotek I think was my A600. We have 5 Amiga’s from A500 to A1200 and CD32. I stupidly sold my A3000 in 1999 - seriously regret that :( I’ve just ordered a GOEX for a pristine A500 we have with a broken floppy. Can’t wait to try it!
FANTASTIC!!
Thanks Roar!
Top notch production and very helpful! I think I will order two of them. Still, maybe I will miss the real floppy drive for my old disks? Guess the only way is to convert my disks to adf files themselves!?
It is really nice Captain. Another thing you can do is get an external GoTek and install a DF0/Df1 switch so you can keep your real floppy drive
@@TheGuruMeditation Interesting, thanks! But the Goex is very slick and convinient. Hm, I think about it.
I have Hotel's, but have to get one of these soon- like probably today.
They are cool!
Call me El Cheapo, but while this new product seems perfect, I will stick with my installed GoTek and OLED-screen also attached on top of my Amiga 500. Works perfectly for more than two years now.
If you already have a working solution that you are happy with I don't think there is a good reason to change it. I like this GOEX when starting from scratch
Great video. Glad I followed you!
Cheers! Thanks for the kind words and the follow!
@@TheGuruMeditation yw man! keep the vids coming!
Love your enthusiasm. You look like your having fun with all of this cool shit. Some modern retro channels are a bit dry for me if I'm being honest. Cheers!
Nice. Looks like a slightly better solution. Thanks for the tip on this hardware.
Cheers! It is a cool piece of hardware
@@TheGuruMeditation Might be for me, when my drives are all dead.
It's 2023 and Kiki Stockhammer still distracted me. 🥰😁🤣
Thanks for the video, might grab a couple, 1 for an A500 and 1 for an A1200. Will go for vanilla brackets and oled mounts as I will paint mine, most of my Amiga's have been painted.
Looks like they're outta stock atm.
Nice, enjoy! I would order one even if they are out of stock. I know they are making more. There was quite a rush after this video was made
Still a fan? Loving the neat OLED cable feed through the case grill… I’ll get one for my A600 and A1200 I reckon… once the $ start flowing again haha!
Great video!!!! :D :D - IRN
Aw, thanks bud!
thank you
Thanks for watching Peter!
The website is down. Guess everyone flooded them with interest and or orders! LOL! Hopefully they can make plenty, like GoTek.
HA ha! OMG!
@@simonquincey1783 LOL! Sorry ;-) I think it took 2 months or more for me to get mine as well back when I originally bought it, but I can't remember. I know there was a rush for them after this video, so it may take a bit longer. I am sure they will get it to you though. It is worth the wait!
@@simonquincey1783 Excellent! Enjoy
Wish I'd had this when I still had my A1200
It is really sweet!
The wheel is actually a button as well.
OMG. Mind blown! Thanks! I am gonna Run to the Hills with this GOEX!
@@TheGuruMeditation Haha. Respect on the reference. haha.
Good stuff🤙🤙🤙
Thanks man!
Im sold.
It is a sweet piece of gear!
Wish i had Amiga 1200!
I had Amiga 500 when i was young.
The 500 is great. That is a classic. The 1200 is more versatile these days though. The IDE and PCMCIA make it a dream as well as AGA capability
@@TheGuruMeditation My 500 was upgraded with 1Mb RAM and Workbench 1.3 :) had a switch so i could choose 1.2 or 1.3 depending in the games. Some of them did not work on wrong version. Had that big commodore extra floppy, commodore monitor with mono audio, TAC2... lots of fun.
Here in Sweden its hard to find a Amiga 1200. If there are any they are expensive and sometimes modded and also the plastic is in bad condition. Really yellow plastic.
I might get än Amiga 500 from a friend. He has two. It didnt work. But that shouldnt be a problem. I had plans to keep the keyboard and replace the case and caps with new ones. And use modern PCB's to use with SD-card and such. Dont think the components on the Amiga PCB will be so good in condition for this many years.
Any suggestions what to do if i can have it? What to change, mod, upgrade, replace.. modernize.
@@TheGuruMeditation message me if you find any 1200 available. Hard to find here.
@@orfeous Will do!
@@orfeous Nice! My favorite upgrade for the 500 is the ACA500+ icomp.de/shop-icomp/en/produkt-details/product/ACA500plus.html
Nice hardware but I lean to much on the WHDLoad Games and Demos. Use only the intern diskdrive for installs such as 3.1.4 and 3.1. Maybe it’s great with new Demos on ADF’s. It’s very nice that there is a black version. Should be perfect for my A1200 CD32 case such as yours.
Yes I use WHDLOAD mostly as well. But many of the new games and music disks come as ADF files so for me it is easier to use this instead of trying to get them to work making my own WHDLOAD slave.
nice!!!!
Thanks James!
Thanks for the detailed review, I'm going to order one of these :)
Can you tell me - if you order the on-pills version with the on-screen menu, is the OSD still required for anything or can you operate it without it? Thanks for your help!
My pleasure! Thanks for the kind words. No, the OSD isn't necessary at all. Personally I use the OLED exclusively.
@@TheGuruMeditation Thanks for the fast reply! What I really meant was, does the OSD and OLED display essentially the same information? As in, if you buy the on-pills version with the on screen info build in, do you also still need the OLED really?
I'll likely order it anyways - for the price it's a nice addition and very well integrated! Just curious as I'm making lots of mods and the price starts to add up!
@@jimiga4902 Honestly I can't give you good information because I haven't done the soldering to enable the OSD. There are some clips online of the OSD working (it is basically the FlashFloppy OSD) but I didn't want to solder to my MoBo so I never took advantage of that feature. So you don't actually need the "on Pills" if you don't need to OSD and Keyboard control, but I got it just in case I decide to do it...and it is a black PCB so it matched my case, LOL
@@TheGuruMeditation This all make sense! Thanks very much - that's all the info I needed :)
I don't like the double handling of the GOTEK mode where you have to assign ADFs to slots and then select slots. The idea of "native mode" sounds exciting. This is how it should be, just select a ADF once!
Yeah I agree. I like it nice and easy like this
Sup, Bill.
Hope all is well.
Yo Ash! All good here, thank you. I hope all is well with you too!
@@TheGuruMeditation Yep, not too bad, thanks.
Hoping for better things for everyone this year.
Still here, though. Gotta keep going. ;)
@@electronash Werd. Yeah, here is to a better year for sure!
So the jog wheel lets yu scroll through the floppy images, but how do you select one or eject?
Great question. With the setup you see here, when you switch from one image file to another you are automatically ejecting the current selection and inserting the new selection. If you don't want any "disks" inserted you can just take out the SD card.
Needs to come with hardware for the A2000, 3000, and 4000.
Hey Bill, do you have a video or know where I can see how to convert my my floppies to ADF using my PC or Amiga 500 and store them on my PC as you apparently are doing.
Where did you get the keys for your case or how did you make them ?
Is there a way to select your ADF file from a full screen "front end"? If you have hundreds or even thousands of files on your SD Card it could take a long time to find what you need on that tiny OLED screen. Great video and showcase as always AmigaBill!
By the way, what's your partner in crime up to lately?
Thanks JW3HH! Anthony is doing well. Keeping busy in Florida. You can select your ADFs from a full screen mode in which case the OLED wouldn't be as helpful. But I have over 5,000 ADF's so I find it easier to store them on my PC's hard drive and copy only what I currently want to load to the SD card.
@@TheGuruMeditation I can see that, sure. Imagine a bunch of single-game SD cards that you insert as though they were floppy disks.... You'd have a giant stack of them!
Would be cool if discs could be identified as a single file but are comprised as a compressed file containing all disc files so you don't have to switch unnecessarily.. and can identify disc switching automatically
Looks a really device. My original Amiga I've not altered at all, using original disk drive. My second A500 has a Gotek, which works well. My A1200 still uses Floppy Disks. Maybe in the future i may change that. This is a great alternative. Im assuming you can put AGA files onto it?
I like to keep it original too, but the drive dying was the perfect excuse for this beauty. Yes, any amiga floppy works!
Did I miss the front on shot of what it looks like in place? Does it fill the floppy slot or does it leave gaps?
I didn't take a straight on shot from the side. Basically you can see the side of the PCB, Jog dial, and SD slot if you look in from the side.
Excellent, you didn't show the Amiga Software that allows you to select the games from your Amiga directly. That really interests me so could you do a follow up video showing how that works?
Thanks Graham. You are right. I should have showed that. Thanks for the feedback and this will be a nice addition to the next video
@@TheGuruMeditation Cheers Bill!
this is great!
but how would you go about if you ever need to read a “real” amiga floppy disk?
Great question corb00. You can have an external floppy drive and plug it in to the floppy drive connector on the back as DF1: If you need to boot from a real floppy DF0: you can install a floppy drive selector switch for the external drive to be DF0: , but you need to add that to the Even CIA chip. Not a big deal, but you have to be comfortable pulling chips. There may be another way but this is the way I know. Or you could always disconnect the GOEX and run a longer power and data cable to a floppy drive outside the case as a temporary solution.
External Floppy Drive?
@@skilgannon1971 yep. External floppy as DF1 or you can install a switch on the Even CIA chip and switch between DF0 and DF1
maybe a stupid question but is goex for adfs only or can the sd card be used to transfer large files as well?
That is not stupid at all. It is for ADF's only but there may be some hack out there that lets you do larger files. Actually some firmware may let you do dms files, but I am not 100% sure about that. They are still 888K disk images though
Hi, can you post a link where to buy the black Amiga case? Thanks
Unfortunately you had to back the kickstarter to get this. But they plan on stocking them in Amiga stores some day. Keep an eye on AmigaOneTheLake and A1200.net
this looks awesome but I couldn't see anything about the video / keyboard option ? on the website .I am going to get one regardless
Great question. It is actually on the WiKi for the Flash Floppy firmware
Does this also mean you can access the files on the SD Card through this device in Opus in your real A1200 and run for example WIZ from the internal storage after copying it over?
Or does it only allow you to load them straight from the drive as if you already had a floppy disk in the Drive after turning the Amiga on?
Great question. Yes the drive works with DOPUS, but exactly like a real floppy would. So you see the contents of the "disk" not the ADF file itself. You can copy the contents onto your hard drive but in this case you couldn't boot it like I did here. It would be exactly like copying the contents of a floppy disk
@@TheGuruMeditation
Ah cool! that makes a lot of Amiga sense 👍 Well if any game has a HD Install option that'll make this device very handy. It'll save me from having to get my CF Card out inside the 1200 every time I want something new 👍 I've got my Amiga hooked up to the Net but a lot pages it can't access as you know.
Can you use a larger oled display screen? I find that one shown to be a little squished just wondering if a larger one would be better?
I'm sure you could use any oled panel with the same connectors and voltage requirements, but it looks like it only displays 1 colour text, so maybe a larger screen wouldn't have much benefit.
It is a great question. I think so, but I honestly don't know for sure. Sorry. I would have to look into it.
Hello
Good tutorial. You would know how to install the internet on an AmigaOS 4.1 classic with Winuae. a greeting
Thank you. That is actually on my to-do list as well
Apart from being absolutely cool, does this do anything differently or better than a Gotek? I have an external Gotek drive and I’d hate making too many intrusive modifications to my childhood Amiga 500.
I totally understand. They are basically the same. I am running the flashfloppy firmware which was pre-installed and most GoTek's are working with that firmware as well. The things I really like about the GoEx is the simplicity of everything being right in one place and easy to buy. The 3D printed mount that fits perfectly, the jog wheel, and the external OLED
So if you are happy with your external GoTek and don't want to remove your original floppy drive, you probably don't need it. I would get one if you want to remove the original floppy drive
@@TheGuruMeditation Thank you for replying right away 😊 I’ll definitely keep the Goex in mind if my disk drive dies one day. It would be too sad not being able to use my old floppies though.
Stupid question but here it goes... will it work with the ACA500Plus?
Not a stupid question at all. Yes it will work if you have an ACA500+ Just like if you have an ACA500+ and an original floppy drive
Wow, can I use it with msx or any pc ?
Hummm, I don't know. It would require flashing it with firmware compatible with the floppy controllers for those machines. I know there is firmware that works with the Atari ST, but not sure about MSX or PC.
Are these still being made as been on the website and every version is out of stock on the shop. Disappointing as looks great.
life would be better when motorola announce 68100 xD and who ever own amiga announce new cips and new amiga xD and with wb 3.2 xD
I agree!
I think the name is to similar to gotek I think people will get confused or order the wrong 1 buy mistake
It is very possible! That is even why I titled the video this way.
How about I send you my A3000 so you can do a repair video on it? I'll pay for shipping both ways. lol
I would totally do that, but to be honest I am not a hardware expert
But.. the GoTek CAN do this all..??? Mine has the OLED, the speaker, the LEDs, a 3D printed frame, and the video mod and jog dial can easily be soldered, if one really needs them. So what is so special about the GOEX?
Yes the GoTek can. What I like about this is what I said in the video. It comes this way and is very easy to install. No need to do things like solder the jog dial
Sadly out of stock :(
Hmm 31 euros or 51? :)
right...now bring us awesome floppy drive (1.44/720) for modern computers, then we'll talk
I would love that too. Floppies and the drives are a dying breed. I saw the new board that lets you connect a real floppy drive to a MiSTer and that is cool, but we could use some new drives. Sadly I don't think the demand is there.
real fan use original folly is same fast than before
Yes I have a 1200 that is completely original. I respect keeping things original very much. I even keep the shielding on my other 1200. But in my opinion a real fan is anyone who loves their Amiga
Also, like I said in the video, I would have kept the real floppy drive in this one if it didn't break. I will fix that one though.
This is nothing really special. You should order an Amigotek FF OSD ...this is the real thing !
I am not familiar with it. I will check it out. Tahnks!
