    Nah, i cant believe that some People study at collège for 12 years when the chance of them getting the job they studied for is less than 50 percent

    Interesting video Lynn, you make some very pertinent points!
    I graduated from 4 years of university here in Canada in 1990. I walked out of there with a grand total of $452 of debt. Man, times have changed! That same degree would now cost me out of pocket somewhere around $50,000. Educational grants from the government were typical for most students back then. Not any more! Ah well, we all live in our own time depending on when and where we were born, we just have to make the best of it and do what our hearts tell us to do. Everyone's path in life is different but as long as we get to where we want to be it's all good. It doesn't really matter "how." Live life, be a good person and be happy, and for many today, that means f*ck the debt!
    I really enjoyed your video and have subbed. Thanks!
    Mike from Canada.

    I'm 46 and still don't know what I'm going to do when I grow up. 🤣
    As I said before, I dropped out of college and made a complete U-turn with my life. No regrets so far, but I knew when I made that decision that I'd be throwing away my career. College is still a good choice when you know what you want to do. And even if you take the wrong course, that final piece of paper opens a lot of doors, even in completely unrelated jobs and careers.

      Yes college can still be a very good choice for certain people. It really depends on what you want out of life.

    I went to a certain California college for 4 years studying Aerospace Engineering... Now working as a Frontend Engineer in Software, completely unrelated. All I can say is this: I hated my time in college. I probably have way more debt than you, not a contest though :). I feel a bit cheated due to the fact that my actual career is nothing like what I thought it would be.
    Funny enough, my dream school was TU Delft and I did actually get in, but with International fees it just would not have been feasible.
    I also don't like the culture of "Drop out of college." I get why people do that but, at this point, especially remembering that AI is a new kid on the block, I think we need to find a middle ground.
    I think we're on the cusp of something huge here. No matter what your stance is about AI or education, this might just be a culmination point for things like education.
    Amazing video! Also how the hell is your production quality so amazing???

      Thanks for sharing this! Always love to read about experiences of others and glad I'm not alone in this haha. And I agree with you on your point about being on a culmination point for education.
      As for the production quality; making videos has been a hobby of mine for a while now. I love learning about the art of storytelling, cinematography and editing. I also just put in a lot effort into my videos, so I really appreciate that you notice. Thank you for your nice compliment 😊

    1. The internet has a lot of info that can teach you certain processes.
    2. AI
    3. Student debt; would
    4. Lack of real-world skills once you graduate. YES! YES! YES! They want you to finish a four-year degree in three years and have five years of experience one week after graduation.
    5. Not sure; perhaps that there are many legitimate paths to do stuff.
    College used to be a good thing, but now it's become a scam, yes, even in the natural sciences. I recently interviewed for a job and found out that someone who graduated the year ahead of me with a geology degree couldn't find work; he went back to school for another two years to become an electronics technician. I would not have gone for what I did had I known that the course work would be more intellectually stimulating than the jobs I somehow needed the degree for.
    I also want to, in a small way, call out employers for increasing degree requirements for bottom-tier jobs. I've worked in several lab jobs since college that I could have done right out of high school. My coworkers and I would look at each other and ask, "Why did we go to college?" Really, on-the-job training would be cheaper for the employer and help get people experience sooner.

    As a German leaving school system early and never regretted it: I feel it's a bit of shame that nowadays you "need" this paper (Bachelor/Master) as a door opener for job opportunities ... which often works very well in the first step.
    I left school at 16. Ok, joined a 2 year apprenticeship as a public official (in German: Beamter, lower rank = mittlere Laufbahn) which means working and earning money but also to study a lot of law regulations. I finished at 18. Changed to private sector with 21 and got a nice and nice paid job.
    In my opinion: College is as mentioned at 4:10 often to "find your way". Not everybody needs College to find his way. Joining college means you were tough enough to go through college years and you learn to soak information and analyze or understand things. Some people learn at College knowledge they can use later. Others employes to companies where company related skills are needed and learned stuff from college is not very helpful. And as pointed out: Knowledge can be googled nowadays. If you googled successful you dive deep into knowledge but there is the danger to loose the way: there's nobody who says: that's the wrong result.
    Funfact: I checked whether it was the same discord server I joined a bit myself for AI generated images - but it wasn't 🙂
    AI is a good thing but mankind must be careful because anything good mostly can be used in a bad way as well - and it will be😞

    • @Lynneverly
      @Lynneverly  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I completely understand your perspective. It can be frustrating when a piece of paper becomes a requirement for job opportunities. But it's great to hear that you found success without pursuing a traditional college education. Everyone's path is different, and what matters most is finding your own way to success.

      @@Lynneverly I can't help but laugh. A piece of paper... a check box... a certificate or a title on a resume... a passing score... people don't focus enough on the substance, the depth, or the time consumption.

  • @coopergates9680

    Thank you. Reason 1 is the biggest, universities have ceased to become anywhere near the optimal source of cutting edge information and results, even if someone entirely avoids OpenAI and Google. Side note, did you notice certain updates to OpenAI making it worse, such as a much lower chance of a correct answer when it is asked if a number is prime? Not a knock on AI in general, developer issues lol
    University did give me something I can't access at home and may not have been able to obtain at a job without the Bachelor's degree (Chemistry lab space, reagents, and equipment), but here I am having switched to software engineering and working at home.
    I did not end up with debt even though I'm in the USA, but I sure did avoid pursuing the pricier schools. Perhaps you pursued law because it would pay well or you wanted to make a systemic impact?

    • @Lynneverly
      @Lynneverly  Před 5 měsíci

      Haha no I did not really notice that. But I’ll test it now ;). I guess i chose law because I indeed thought I could make decent money from it. There were also other factors. I didn’t really know what was actually important to me at the time. But just like you said; you can always change careers later in life :)

    Amen. 90% of jobs that young people usually able to get hardly need any education other than regular school (or non lol). So it makes more sense to try stuff first and then go to college when you find your true passion. Or don't go there at all and learn stuff from professional courses/internet/etc
    But college degree shouldn't be something sacred. It's just a big expensive training course that's all

    • @Lynneverly
      @Lynneverly  Před 5 měsíci

      I agree with you. It depends on the type of job of course, but I also think a college degree shouldn't be seen as something sacred.

    I don't think college is the problem, I think you should figure it what you want to do at the time and then see if college or university is required.
    A degree is a tool but not the goal.

      Well you should definitely do your own research. Only you know what's best for you. And making mistakes and not knowing what's good for you is perfectly normal. It's part of growing up and you can always pivot later in life.
      Wish you the best ✨

    Lol many (MANY) years ago I went to University in Delft and thought I wanted to do Aerospace and Flight Engineering, then discovered there were not that many spots in NL where to go after graduation... So I decided to do Applied Physics instead, finished that, got the degree. A month later I started as a software engineer, not 100% related ... It was the time I guess
    Then again, I've never regretted having a solid understanding of Physics in my life, all that happens around us is based on that...
