The Ford Galaxie is a full-sized car that was built in the United States by Ford for model years 1959 through 1974. The name was used for the top models in Ford's full-size range from 1958 until 1961, in a marketing attempt to appeal to the excitement surrounding the Space Race. In 1958, a concept car was introduced called "la Galaxie" which incorporated the headlights into pods inline with the grille and a reduced front profile.[2]
For 1962, all full-size Fords wore the Galaxie badge, with "500" and "500/XL" denoting the higher series. The Galaxie 500/LTD was introduced for 1965 followed by the Galaxie 500 7-Litre for 1966. The Galaxie 500 prefix was dropped from the LTD in 1966, and from the XL in 1967;[3] however, the basic series structuring levels were maintained. The "regular" Galaxie 500 continued below the LTD as Ford's mid-level full-size model from 1965 until its demise at the end of the 1974 model year.[4]: 401-42
The Galaxie was the competitor to the high-volume full sized Chevrolet Impala[5] and the Plymouth Belvedere.
The 1960 Galaxie introduced all-new design with less ornamentation. A new body style was the Starliner, featuring a huge, curving rear observation window on a pillarless, hardtop bodyshell. The thin, sloping rear roof pillar featured three "star" emblems that served as the Galaxie signature badge for all 1960 - 62 models. The formal roofed 2-door hardtop was not available this year, but the roofline was used for the Galaxie 2-door pillared sedan, complete with chromed window frames. It had been the most popular body style in the line for 1959, and sales dropped off sharply. Contrary to Ford's tradition of pie-plate round taillights, the 1960 featured "half-moon" lenses turned downward. The "A" pillar now swept backward instead of forward, making entering and exiting the car more convenient.
For 1961, the bodywork was redone again, although the underpinnings were the same as for 1960. This time, the tailfins were almost gone; the small blade-like fins capped smaller versions of 1959's "pie-plate" round taillamps once again. Performance was beginning to be a selling point, and the 1961 Galaxie offered a new 390 CID (6.4 L) version of Ford's FE series pushrod V8, which was available with either a four-barrel carburetor or, for higher performance, three two-barrel carburetors. The latter was rated at 401 hp (298 kW) (gross). The 352 was downgraded in favor of the 390; it was equipped with a 2-barrel carburetor and single exhaust. The Starliner was again offered this year, and Ford promoted this model with luxury and power equipment, but it was dropped at the end of the year, as the re-introduced square-roof hardtop coupe, the Galaxie Club Victoria, took the bulk of sales.

My Dad gave me an original promo of this Ford which he got back in 1961. As a kid I played with it until I damaged the body and the wheels, but didn't have the heart to throw what was left of it, out. When AMT re-released this kit, I bought it and used the parts to replace the ones I damaged, resulting in a nice complete promo. I painted it to match the original promo, which was a robins-egg blue. I'm sure if Dad were still here, he'd enjoy seeing how I restored the gift he gave me when I was around 9 years old...

Chris you keep being you and build your way. You to us here many times to build for us, not the what other builders would like to see being built. I will never forget that. That's what got me back in building models cars and small trucks. Thank you for all your input.

The custom front end reminds me of the one that came with the '57 Chevy kit. It's always fun opening and exploring a new kit. On another note, It sure feels good coming here and leaving all the tRump stuff behind. "Drilling in mom's wall" reminds me of when my brother and I were kids. One day my dad yells from the living room, "What are you kids doing in there?" Of course, we replied,"Nothing." Actually, we we had found some small brads and we were busy nailing down our new AF/X HO race track down to mom's new vinyl flooring! You only make that mistake once!

I've been watching you for a few years now. And I've learned a lot of things watching your builds.. The main thing I've learned is that you don't have to buy 100's of dollar's in unnecessarily modeling tools other things to end up with a great looking kit.. And a even better one when you build for you and how you want it to be.. And this build is just another fantastic one done your way. 👍

I have an early version of that kit. Bought some Tamiya Putty to do the body work. Sadly got about half done and lost the kit in a surprise clean up by my brothers. They didn't know it was a work in progress. Can't blame them. Glad to see it's back out! Can't wait to see how yours will turn out. I know it'll be great, like always.

Great build Chris, just a coment, all the models I built in the late %0's and thru the 60's all had the interior mounting guides and the screws were standard on all cars except the model T's and the 30's -40's car kits. I really enjoy your work, keep it up.

    Good morning,
sorry I use a translator because I don't speak American... I'm French... so I don't understand you when you speak.... On the other hand I like your constructions, because you see you don't take the lead and don't don't look for 1000% perfect. Your construction looks like 99% of people who model cars. Keep it up, you're awesome👏👏👏

Nice. This inspires me to build one .I have those custom parts left over from the last issue of that kit several years ago. I think I'll use them on a 64 galaxie curbside kit I picked up the other day at Ollies. Nose and tail parts seem to line up ok with some minor trimming. I'll just build one based on the 64 body cause I don't want to wait till the 61 becomes available.

I often think some of the customizing options in these AMT cars from the fifties and sixties look a bit garish, but this one goes pretty well with the lines of this car and the version you have done looks like something out of "The Jetsons" - truly a product of its era, and it looks like a simple kit to build. Wonder whether I should start a collection of Galaxies as I did about 20 years ago with Chevy Impalas? That wall display stand is clever but it also looks a bit too light to hold a car. I wonder how it works in practice hanging on a wall?

I wonder whether a second coat of Bondo, thinned with liquid cement and brushed on, would have smoothed the joints a bit more, without requiring sanding? I've always hated sanding filler putty. But it looks like your use of a q-tip worked pretty well.

This is called a curbside meaning no drive train. This is an example of the models that we old guys were limited to back in the 1950’s and early 1960’s.
