I thought it was because SNL's 20th season was one of their seasons that was so bad that NBC was seriously considering canceling the show (see also: Jean Doumanian's sixth season in 1980 and season 11 where Lorne Michaels actually had Joan Cusack, Robert Downey, Jr., Anthony Michael Hall, Randy Quaid, and a pre-In Living Color Damon Wayans as cast members) and the writers decided, "Hey, let's kill off the male cast members. Maybe (if the break from the familiar doesn't startle the anto-woke crowd too much) they can even try dubbing in a few bonus racial slurs for special occasions and replace the ending credits with photos of dead refugees intercut with soyjacks and rare pepes.

Because this season was widely derided for it's poor quality, the "Bad Boys" (as they're famously referred to) being the main source of it- there was a definite feeling they were becoming, metaphorically, fat, dumb, and happy when it came to their sketch writing and acting. Many sketches were one note, repetitive jokes that rarely landed. Norm is one of the only exceptions, his Weekend Update being one of the only positives of the season.

After Farley left, I didn’t watch entire episodes regularly anymore. For a while I’d tune in and just be disappointed shortly after the cold openings, which gradually became the peak highlight of the shows. Then when they’d drag unfunny skits into the ground repeatedly, like the cheerleader skits in the late 90s, I would just turn off the TV for the night.
Thankfully I moved away from dial-up since then, so if a rare modern skit happens to be funny, I can just watch it and not endure the rest of the show. Or I can just pull up the good old known classics whenever they happen to re-release them. (Please bring back more Eddie Murphy, Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Chris Farley, et al online SNL!)

This sketch was meant as a send off for Farley, Sandler, Mohr, & Meadows, as Norm was the only one of them to be coming back for season 21. Meadows did get rehired after the fact, but this was Norm writing the most ridiculous send off for his friends at the end of the 1995 season. This is a time capsule of when SNL was amazing because while the writing might not have been great, the players involved made it amazingly funny. It was all downhill from here.
