    I love your trick with the paint brush to steady your hand with the banding wheel. I found success very quickly during my first class in throwing. They said I was a "natural" at the wheel. I very quickly discovered SGRAFFITO during that class and never looked back. I found out early on I detested doing all the calculations and markings to make mathematically perfect patterns as you've done here on this beautiful form. I only enjoy carving when I'm doing random, organic, free-hand, designs. The only calculating I do is some general marks to make sure my design is balanced all around my form.

    Yes, yes they count. I count, most definetly and it drives me bonkers, when its not right. My favourite small mug has a lobsted pattern and it drives me crazy. I count and it has to be level

    Another fantastic video Ann and coming at an opportune time for me. My goal right now is to go whole heartedly into surface texture decoration. One of my passions is carving on pottery but I have so many passions with pottery that I don't get particularly good at any of them so right now I'm trying to start thinking of surface texture while the pot is on the wheel trying to set up my surface ideas early on in the process.

      My instructor told our class, “If you can draw a line, you can design” I’m not the best but those lines work! 😊

      @@Manniemo49 I have recently been trying to make, on a curvy pot, that connected flower design where each petal of the flower is part of another flower. Very geometric so it's hard to do when your pot doesn't have straight sides. I recently saw an article where the artist did the exact thing dividing the pot up into squares and then he simply drew the same design in each square just making it smaller in the smaller squares and larger in the larger squares. The pattern lined up perfectly in the end. I love how Ann uses a paintbrush to give stability for her needle tool while making lines. In this article, the artist used a big plastic triangle to set against the table and then held his needle tool up the side of it to get perfect vertical lines.

      Hey Vicki. Good idea for a video. Let me give that a thought. We have done a lot of applique types of things and when we did the textures video we created sprigs for that one. You can find that video a couple of videos back if you take a look.

    Hi Ann, do you do anything to keep the cup from drying out too much while carving?

    • @annruel1982
      @annruel1982 Před rokem +1

      Hi Tom. Good question. the cup was small , I had my design all planned out and the carving went fast so I didnt worry about it drying out on this project. But I have done much larger projects that took days to carve. In that case there are several things you can do. One is to keep plastic over most of the piece only uncovering the part where you are carving. Another idea is work with a humidifier in the room if you really have a long project that you have to leave uncovered. JoAnn Axford is the master at this.
