- What is it like to drive a race car in a door to door endurance race? Well in this video I show you our 24hours of Lemons e46 BMW and our team's first time on the race track. After installing a fire suppression system, battery cutoff switch, roll cage, and containment racing seat with a full 6pt harness, we are ready to race... Well, so we thought... What we expected to be a weekend of racing ended up being a weekend of swapping a blown motor with a new junkyard motor into the race car.

I love that despite you being probably the biggest car mechanic youtuber, you are still just as humble and quality oriented as day 1. Your positive attitude inspires me so much, thank you for uploading these awesome vids even if it doesn't always go as planned
Thanks a lot!
@Jack Hoffman what colors your CZcams play button? Silver or golden? Oh…yeah shut up.
@Jack Hoffman 7 months ago. I still want to stress it. You are dorky. He uploads when he wants to. He uploads on his own time, which is why his videos are quality. CZcamsrs who upload daily tire themselves out. I don't think people want hin to tire himself out.
@@Ayuraos exactly
@Jack Hoffman he uploads at his own pace. Daily uploads of poor quality work, or this standard of work, at a slow pace?
As someone who watches the videos for fun, the former ir better.
But Chris does it to help people, and the latter makes it so much better for whoever is doing the same to their car
Youre right Chris, its not about speed. It’s about drive, it’s about power, we stay hungry, we devour
Put in the work, put in the hours and take what’s ours
Hahaha
@@chrisfixyes!😊
Cringe.
Super impressive that you even attempted to replace a motor during the race, and that other teams helped. You got some great memories even if not great results!
It was the experience of a lifetime! And everyone was so helpful!
At least you had a lot of people to help out! Amazing how their young but they have good knowledge how to work on cars
What a great time!!
Hey @Project Farm
Hey project farm

Great to see you getting on track!
Can’t wait for the next race!
Damn, Jimmer commenting on ChrisFix, im a huge fan of both of you!
this could be the colab of the century
@@chrisfix when is the next one? Please don't tell me next year !
Jimmer get back to gt licenses mate 😂 your running out of time 😜
This is what cars and racing is all about, the journey it takes you on whether that be winning or losing a race, blowing an engine up, helping other people out when they're having a catastrophe etc. This video makes me proud to be part of this scene!
I love how everybody was on with the idea of just casually replacing the entire frickin engine!! At that point I wouldn't even have bothered
Honestly, I'd pack it if I saw a rod. Your determination is insane, well done !
We were considering that at first but decided to not give up!
We tried our best, certainly. We figured if we just had to button things up in the morning, we could race the afternoon.... but it didn’t work out. We had a great time delirious with sleep, it’s all about time with friends at the end of the day!
Every race has a minimum of 5-6 teams that swap engines (we have done it before). We would know, our engine hoist is normally loaned out from 9 PM Friday (after test and tune) to about 9 AM Sunday and not just to one team. It is a rite of passage in this series. We have gotten to the point we normally have "basic" repairs but have done more trans swaps than engine.
I've only been in desperate slugfests with events a few times, but I know just how hard it is to slog on when everything is in ruins. Excitement, dashed hopes and fatigue are a very heavy burden. We all look from face to face hoping to see some spark. In my experience different people hit their limit at different times and the ones who are still on their feet inspire the ones who are lying on the rocks to get back up.
Damn I got exhausted watching you guys take apart that engine.
i can’t tell you how many times i’ve sit in my garage at 2am watching chris’ videos and not doing shit to my car
Lol
I can relate to this 100%
At least you have a garage right :)
Haha nice one and true!

This is why I absolutely love the Lemons series racing; if shit happens - everyone who can help will do what they can to do so.
Really sad to see you only got 8 laps out of the car, but it sounds like you all had one hell of an experience to add to the Lemons catalogue of stories.
The fact that you saw a rod and didn’t give up is just pure determination, keep up the hard work, chris! 💪🏻

Ruby logic! XD (The Land Before Time)
LOL, that clock in the car which recorded oil leak footage is epic.
I live a hour away from there it’s so cool knowing how close you really are !
You should come out this summer! It’s June 10-12th.
I noticed that oil pump nut had the hole through it for the wire. That means someone on your team must be kicking themselves for not putting it on before the race. Hope they don’t feel too bad, you guys will get it next time!
Love your videos! Without them I’d be lost. We have a huge e46 community down here in Orlando and every April 6th(4/6) we have a party, most of us wear a bandana as an homage to you and your work! Lmao.
This guy is a legend!!!
Oh we wired it the next day. Everyone was just too exhausted to function after we got that nut on haha
@@BMbreW haha that’s awesome!
You and ChrisFix are the reason I got an E46 in the first place! Figures you'd know what's up lol
Best part seemed to be all the other teams willing and eager to help you out
Even tho it was a race so many teams helped in any way they could. People came over and asked if they could help in any way. It was awesome

The other teams willing to lent you a garage and tools put a big smile on my face, it makes the racing experience so much better and more fun for everyone!
It's sad your team couldn't finish but the things you and your team learned/will learn will make for an epic come back! I wish you and your team the best of luck next time :D

Great video, as always! Love your team's can-do attitude and recognizing when it's OK to accept defeat. The icing on the cake was how good of sports you all were by showing up to the ceremony with the same enthusiasm as the winner! Looking forward to your next video.
Sometimes the journey is more important than the destination. Great job guys!
During the engine install, I felt the struggle. Sometimes everything that can go wrong will go wrong. All you can do is take a break and then keep going until the job gets done.
Lots of internet searches, phone calls, hard work and more money usually gets it done. 2 steps forward, one step back. The persistent and the will to be undefeatable, usually take the prize.
murphy's law
engine swap never goes has plan I have been through a lot of them each some different pop up go had you say it’s a learning experience
Crazy how the engine was still running with a window in the block lol! Usually 2 things that take these engines out: cooling system or the oil pump nut. I am sure you guys will be in the final parade next year! Good luck!
Thanks man! Yeah and it figured those are the two things we didn’t have a problem with lmao
Some of those european engines are crazy. I had a 87 Volvo 240 engine throw a rod and I managed to drive it home! (About a half mile)
@@chrisfix i drove my turbo E46 1 hour home with rod knock.
My ranger has thoroughly impressed me 2.3 duratec and my stepdad stole it and ran it without oil for a week (you know enough to keep it from locking up obviously) but the old thing still runs but it’s runs like crap 😂
I look on the bright side I’m a little bit closer to putting a coyote in it 😂
@@randytheracer3664 my pushrod 302 flipped over and ran on its side starved of oil for 45 minutes and it still ran and drove to the junkyard 😂

Team Frankenvette here; it was awesome seeing you out there with us. I'm glad to see that you are taking what you learned and rolling with it. We've seen guys rage quit for less. Hope to see you on the track this year.
ChrisFix does not rage quit anything. When the Grim Reaper comes for him they will be playing poker for days.
Thanks man! We were determined! If we didn’t have harness problems I’m convinced we would have gotten the car on the track to do one more lap.
@@chrisfix don't rush, like you said, if you rush you make mistakes, don't worry there is still a chance! Oh and make sure to check the oil filter housing!
Great camaraderie, patience and purpose from all you guys. Congratulations for at least the first try! Good Job!
It’s great seeing one of my favorite car guys make his own race team. I love this so much 💜

I'm actually impressed about how the engine could still run with one of the rods literally broken off.
Good luck on the next race!
It greatly increased the crankcase ventilation and made inspection of the internals so much simpler.
Right!? I thought it would not run with a whole piston/rod gone and a hole in the block.
I'm failing to see a reason why it wouldn't run.

That was really cool to see nobody quit till the end. I hope next time will be no problem. Curious to watch your experiences. Greatings from Turkey and Germany.
I've lost track of the number of times I've been on a team that's given up when we hit a huge snag at the final hour. I've always wanted to press on, but I was always outnumbered.
It's nice to see you had a team of people that pushed on to the very end, even when failure was the guaranteed result. Very rare to see.

Bit of a heartbreaking end but you and your team gave it your all! Good job in your first 24hrs of Lemons race!
Super cool Chris! Excited to see the next race!
Congratulations to you and your team! You all have a winning attitude! First Class 🏆
Thanks a lot! The team was the real mvp that weekend!
Super excited for this video! My first lemons race resulted in a blown up engine in a BMW as well, we had a spare motor with us and got it swapped out. This actually led to quite a few changes to the car including converting the front clip to a quick disconnect where we can remove it and pull the engine faster. We also converted our exhaust to just a few rubber hangers and straight steel. We can drop the exhaust with power tools within about 30 seconds of getting the car in the air. These don't sound like much but laying on the asphalt in the pits they're a huge quality of life improvement. Glad to welcome some new folks to the Lemons experience!
Yeah simplifying things is great! If we blow another engine we will put in a Chevy 350 with a carb lol
I enjoyed watching this video so much. Thank you Chris fix for your great and enjoyable videos.
Great job guys ! I feel bad that you guys didn't finish the race, but I am sure you had an amazing experience together as a team ! Looking forward to the next time you guys race!

Also I’m super stoked for that tear down video! Can’t wait to see ChrisFix go all NTSB on the Beamer!
110% agree. Nobody breaks it down as well as ChrisFix!
This good info for new racers and to start with older car without a ECU, AWD, etc. But the best part is you guys had fun and came together as a team. Our team is only 3 races into LeMons and have made great friends and had a good time helping others out.
Wow what an experience to live through. Seeing the amazing team effort from your team and other teams as well by lending their working space and equipment, It’s definitely a lifetime memorable experience. A great way of showing that even in the times we are leaving with chaos in our nation and around the world, Good people at heart does still exist demonstrated not by words but rather with true actions. kudos to all👏👏🙌🙌❤️
It was something I will remember forever! Amazing environment at races like this, everyone is always willing to lend a hand
I am 14, and I can't thank you enough for the content you have provided, I have learned more than I ever have about cars and help my brother when he repairs our Honda.
For real! Chrisfix and Donut media have taught me everything I know about cars
I'm glad you've learned a lot from the videos! Thanks a lot!
Which one
An amazing number of ChrisFix followers don't have a car yet. I bet you will be awesome at everything car related by the time you are 20. I will be 70 this month and am still learning from his videos.
Any landing you can walk away from is a good one! I know you guys were disappointed, but this was you're very first attempt. You learned a great deal about pre-race preparation, know some tweaks to do (e.g., mirrors) to the car, and when you had a problem you all stuck together, worked the issue, and did your utmost. None of you are quitters, none of you were hurt, and you have a great story to tell in years to come. I think you guys did an amazing job. Don't consider this a failure. Consider this your first day at school, and the beginning of learning the ropes.
My best to you all! :)
Thanks for sharing we want more of these!
Congratulations for all the hard work! Best of luck next year!
Dam you basically went thru what everybody goes thru when they're new at the track. Most of the time spending time with the crew figuring shit out of the fly and sometimes unexpected things happen. That's car life, we're garage educated, we can handle it. Good content Chris!
11:20 he knew exactly what he was filming. 🧐
It may look and feel like a defeat, but you don't just invent yourself a team, this is what makes you a team. Well done guys if I were the owner I'd be proud of each and everyone of you.
I wish you the best in the next race you and all the team, your positivity keep me excited thank you brother
From mastering your drifting to starting on a track race. I'm gonna like this series

As someone who loves racing cars but hates fixing them, this video has all the highs and lows I've come to experience at the track. Great job, good luck in the next one.
Yo love your videos bro! I've learned so much from this channel and you inspired me to want to become a mechanic. cant wait to see the engine breakdown!
i’m honestly really happy to be part of this journey :) i’ll always be here supporting your every step and learning from the best!
As soon as I heard engine swap, I knew it wasn't going to be quick, I've done the same thing with my e39 going from an m52tu to an m54, and yes it might've taken only 15 hours of work, but it was constant work figuring out everything with these engines. The worst part from my own experience was putting the engine in, and completely forgetting to swap over the old oil pan (D'oh!)! My donor engine was from a z4 and obviously, the pans were different, but I, just as your team, was very tired, and just wanted to finish the project. Good luck next year, hope to see you all in the parade! Don't forget to swap out VANOS seals and the DISA valve!
that race must have been soooo much fun with your buddies. thanks for this. 👍

Dude you gave it your best shot. Learning is key to racing, and you learned a lot. Best of luck next time!
Great job! I couldn't have removed an entire engine and swapped it out within a week of sleepless nights. You came so close in 1 day. Cant wait till your next race!!!
Great job! Just next year take a spare 'tested' engine with transmission with you(full kit). Swapping it in and driving few hundred km so you know it runs perfect then swapping the 'main' engine back in as a team. So in a race day if it goes like it went, you already have the specific engine knowledge, where everything goes and you will be ready for quick swap...maybe of course not F1 speed swap, but... a reasonable swap so you could enjoy the event for what you where prepping and waiting. Of course you cannot bring every spare part as it ia a old car and everything can brake when you push it, but you should take some crucial parts like cv axles, joints, brake pads and discs etc. So if something breaks you are ready to replace and not to rush to a scrap where you take a part that can fit theoretically, but as it was in your case it cannot be done - at least in the given race timeline. To bad that it went like this in just lap 12, but i hope to see better results next year!
Great video! High five from Latvia! Stay safe.
