    "We were soldiers
    (Soldiers)
Carried the war on our shoulders
    (Shoulders)
    For our nations
    (Nations)
Is that why we bury our friends?"
I feel like there's not enough people talking about how amazing this set of lyrics is. I would say that these are probably the best English lyrics Sabaton has ever written. En Livstid I Krig is probably the #1 overall, but nothing touches this for English songs.
Edit: Someone on a different video made a joke about Floor doing the credits and it went something like this
Producer: Hey guys we need a really good Soprano singer for the ending credits for this new video
Hannes: Oh yeah I have one at home

    • @mushinbujin
      @mushinbujin Před 2 lety

Yeah. That bit about "burying our friends" just hurts and it's an incredible line. I haven't yet heard someone comment on it, but in everyone's defense there is A LOT to talk about in this video, and with everything going on it's easy to miss.

German grandfather fought in world war I. He fought in Belgium and he fought in Russia. He spoke about this one year when we were celebrating Christmas at his home. This unofficial truce lasted for almost a day and a half to two days. After the truce ended the men could not shoot at each other and were shooting over their heads on purpose. FYI the guitar that is being played is a 1914 guitar. This is an awesome one of the most amazing songs I've ever heard in my life. Thank you sabaton and Merry Christmas to all

I love how they only had the drums and the vocals at the end chorus to kinda represent the last minutes of silence before picking up the paste again with the last few lines to represent that the battle is back on.
The last few lines still give me chills, even after listening to it for like 50 times now.
    "A Christmas on the frontline
    We walk among our friends
    We don't think about tomorrow
    The battle will commence
    When we celebrated Christmas
    We thought about our friends
Those who never made it home
    When the battle had commenced"

  • @jmetallover

FYI Bagpipes were used in WW I often to send the troops "over the top" and those bagpipes were often the first to hit No Man's Land in full view of the German trenches opposite them!! Remember WW I was still 19th Century military tactics against 20th Century weapons, thus the slaughter. No one tells the human experiences of history better than Sabaton, here you experience the brief humanity in the midst of complete insanity. Sadly, this never happened again as the generals made sure of it, after all it is harder to kill someone you know. As a vet this Christmas song is also a remembrance for those who gave their all and never made it home for any Holidays. A salute to 11/11 the day we all should recall the sacrifices of those caught up in any war. A chance to remember buddies who hopefully are at peace while we carry on the insanity and fail to learn or regain the humanity these men showed even if it was only briefly. Love Floor's Aria during the end credits as it is the Valkyrie Goddess collecting the souls of the fallen to bring them home to rest!!! BTW great reaction and you should feel some emotions during this moment and if you don't well then you are soulless and nothing matters.

  • @phillee2814

This is a musical movie masterpiece, which any studio in the world would be proud of.
The attention to detail is awesome - spectacular pyro effects, incredibly detailed trench layout, even the guitar and piano are correct for the period, all the uniforms exactly right, and the acting by bandmembers and the supporting cast are magnificent. The only thing I can see missing is that Johannes didn't have a period drum to play, which would have been accurate as drummers (the youngest way to get into the army back then was as a drummer) were used in most units during WW1. Most Scottish and some Irish regiments used pipers to lead them into battle - a practice which persisted into at least WW2, despite over 1000 pipers being lost in WW1.
The Christmas Truce actually broke out spontaneously in a number of sectors along the western front on the first Christmas of the war, but the generals were furious and decreed that it must never happen again. Whole units were withdrawn and moved to different sectors, as they proved to be less than willing to kill their new friends - firing to miss on purpose.
The cross was erected near Ypres in 1999 to commemorate the truce, exactly as shown here, and I believe it is the actual memorial they use in the closing section, apart from the carving of this year into it, of course. It is amazing what people could have sent to them from home - a guitar is probably accurate (the footballs certainly were) and the piano could just as well have been plundered from a village destroyed in the fighting. We know the troops shared chocolate, other treats including Christmas cake, and other traditional fares during some of the truces, and many started with exchanges of Christmas carols between the front lines. Before that, and after, there were a number of brief local truces to bury the dead of recover seriously wounded, so in that sense, it wasn't unique.
There is a definite carol of the bells feel to the song, both at the very start with the chimes (or tubular bells?) and in Joakim's wonderful piano.
Thank goodness that they never did as they promised initially and replaced him on keyboards after he was promoted to lead vocalist - in his words "When they told me they wanted me to stay on lead vocals, they promised to find a new keyboards player, but the lazy bastards never did".
It's doubly handy when you want an outro like this song, need a strong female voice like that to perform it, and your drummer can say "That's ok, I've got one at home!".
Unfortunately, you earned a black mark on your reactor's card for not recognising Floor's voice before it got to her in the credits.
The scale of devastation in WW1 was immense - out of over 2,500 villages or town parishes in England and Wales most lost villagers with only 56 "Thankful villages" not losing anyone despite soldiers serving from there, none have been identified at all in Scotland or Ireland, and just one in France www.hellfirecorner.co.uk/thankful.htm
"Doubly thankful" are those villages from which no soldier failed to return from either world war. These number a mere 18, plus the same village in France, which remarkably does not appear to have lost anyone in military action since at the latest 1870.

I absolutely love the similarities to Carol of the Bells in the piano bit, it's honestly such an incredible song (and video!). The sudden crescendo after the a capella reprise of the chorus just gets me every single time, it's both so powerful you want to headbang and so dramatically evocative of the sudden rush back into war and death after the truce. They did a wonderful job (and the end credits music is also somehow just as perfect, which I suppose is easier when you're got a lyrical metal soprano at home lmao). Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Thomas, you're a delight to listen to as always!

To your point about the guitar and the piano in the trenches.
There are plenty of photos from the time that show various musical instruments in the trenches, pianos, guitars, cellos, etc. Some of them made from various items found in there. Some Cello made out of old oil cans for example.
That's not to say that they were right up in the first line of trenches where you'd typically see people shooting at each other across no mans land. But probably in the later lines of trenches, support trenches, reserve trenches, dugouts, etc.
And while I'm sure there was no standard issue piano issued to the troops, I'm sure that a lot of this stuff was just overlooked, simply because of morale. Something to remember about the war is that it wasn't non-stop shooting and artillery barrages for over 4 years, every hour of every day. One of the things they had to fight was just the daily boredom. Writing letters home, poems, music or just creating other "Trench Art" which I recommend you looking up, because it's fascinating.

The events of Christmas 1914 were never repeated as the Generals on both sides issues orders that any man who tried would be shot or court marshalled. The soldiers on both sides were not prepared to resume the hostilites and were replaced after a few days with fresh battle hungry soldiers

The forward, combat trenches are generally bare bones but the second and third line trenches are more elaborate and have amenities like that.

This song is the greatest song ever created and the video is a masterpiece of not only movie production, but it's a true story of the greatest story from WW1. It not only pulls the heartstrings of us British but our German Allies as well. Those Men that just went over to each other in no man's land are all heroes and should always be remembered for their courage, humanity, love, respect and the real meaning of Christmas. Ordinary British and German soldiers had enough of the war and just wanted to feel human even for a small time. The great war should never of happened, who gives a monkey's about Archduke Franz Ferdinand. I blame the great war on Kaizer Wilhelm the second and his murderous generals and the German government of 1914. Germany is our natural ally for centuries and France our natural enemy. Sabaton have done those British and German soldiers credit, to teach the world about the greatest event which was the Christmas Truce of 1914, and also to keep there memory alive. Thank you Sabaton.
