How to Replace that Broken Spoke on your E-Bike yourself!

  • Most of the time you don't even need to remove the wheel to replace a broken spoke. You can do it yourself and you should have a few extra spokes around just in case. Remember, on E-Bikes with a rear hub motor, the front and back wheel spokes will be a different size. So keep a couple of each size on hand. It's easier than you think.

    Great video. I decided to do it myself after trying to go to the local bike shop. Guy insults my bike first thing (ride1up core5) and then says you cant buy spokes so he has to custom make them. I pointed out that you can buy them and I have the link and he started arguing with me and telling me how he knows way more about it than me. So I left. Ordered them, and will do it myself. Wheels were the only reason I ever went to bike shops as I just do everything else myself, so it will be good to check that last box. Way too many bike shops are completely ignorant about hub motors. Currently hub motor bikes are over 1/3 of the entire USA bike market, and every single shop I have been to acts like nobody ever buys hub motor bikes. Its crazy.

    Broke 3 on my belt-drive e-bike (with mid-drive motor) during first 90 miles. Laced 'em back in, tensioned everything up, released stress and strain, and am back riding like new! I think e-bike builders may tend to send 'em out with too little spoke tension, so CHECK YOURS!

      @@Free__Speechyeah a lot more stress goes through them though it’s the same with the brake pads which I generally have to change yearly. Tougher wheel would increase bike weight and prob put more stress on motor so I’d rather replace the spokes.

    Thanks for this video. It was the inspiration to find the solution to replacing the broken spoke on my ebike.
    I have a 1000w motor, which is about twice bigger than what you got in this bike. So my spokes are 173 mm.
    Being shorter spokes it is a bit tricky to get it in position in the rim hole.
    I ended up using raw force to slide it in position. The spoke ended up bending like L shape but it was no big deal. I simply bend it back to the original straight shape once I had it in the rim hole. 👍

    I break rear spokes quite regularly for some reason. Always at the hub end. I've found that so far the nipples have always been in good shape and able to be reused. So I leave the wheel and tire complete and full of air. I've always been able to get the new spoke in and rethread it into the used nipple in the rim. I don't know if my spokes are poor quality or it's something else. If I can find high quality high strength spokes I would change out all of them.

      Most wheels come with an inner protective sleeve to prevent damage to the tube from spokes. Either grey rubber like that one, or plastic. If they are tubeless wheels then they may come taped instead of having a movable sleeve, but thats unlikely on a hub motor bike.

  • @joeshmoe7967
    @joeshmoe7967 Před 2 lety +1

    Lucky based on your 'weave' of the spokes. On my ebike there is no way to get it in place without undoing a few other spokes. The short ebike spokes cannot bend enough to make it work.
    I also have to remove the brake disc as I need to weave from the other side. That is not a big deal just an extra step.
    In general not difficult just more time consuming depending on the weave and the spokes.

    I would complete the repair by checking (evening) the tension on all the spokes, making them all give the same note when "plucked". If you don't do that, inevitably spokes will continue to break. I check the tension on mine about every 500 miles.

    • @rickfrohnert6991
      @rickfrohnert6991 Před 2 lety

      I agree that spoke tension needs checked routinely on fat bikes. This is especially a problem on trike wheels and hub motors. Trike wheels see lateral G forces from turning, bike wheel don’t so much. Short spokes on hub motors have less stretch so they do not hold proper tension as well.

    I question whether you need to touch the tire itself. If you buy a Chinese replacement spoke of the same gauge, the old nipple can be used with the new spoke. In this case, you simply unscrew the broken spoke out of the old nipple and bow the new spoke until it will fit into the old nipple. You can then screw it on.
