RE: Mastering....my understanding of mastering is that it's more or less what Mike said, but also is related to albums...as in mastering an EP or LP is ensuring uniform dynamics and volumes over the course of a full multi-song release as well, so that one song isn't SUPER LOUD FOR NO REASON or one song is just muffled sounding compared to others, etc. That said, if all the mixdowns are consistent, it makes the mastering part less of 'fixing' anything and just enhancing the tunes for the intended playback scenario (home stereo, club, etc.)
