  • This is an exciting video! Today I will tell you how my electrician apprenticeship video went and some tips and tricks for you if you are about to interview.
    Instagram - sparkysjourney?...
    Here is the email I got:
    You have qualified to be interviewed for an electrical apprenticeship. The oral interview is an important step in the application process. This email will help you in preparing for the interview by addressing several questions you are likely to have about the interview process. You will receive a separate email and letter with your interview date and time.
    *How long will my interview last?
    Your interview will only last 10 minutes. The interviewers must adhere to a strict schedule, so when asked a question you should try to make your point efficiently. Please keep to the topic and avoid straying into irrelevant subjects.
    *The Committee
    You will be interviewed by a committee composed of representatives of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA). The Committee members are highly experienced electrical professionals. They are aware of the knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics that individuals need to be successful electrical workers. The interview team usually consists of 4-7 Committee members.
    *Interview Questions
    The actual interview questions are confidential, but we can tell you a lot about the types of questions that will be asked. The Committee will be asking you questions about how you have handled situations in your life that are relevant to success in apprenticeship. They will want to know the situation, what you did and the result when you were faced with these situations at work, in school or at home. Here is an example of the types of questions asked. This sample question in taken from a clerical worker interview: "Tell me about a time when you had to set up and type a document."
    Remember, your response to these questions should have the following three parts:
    (1) The situation. First, you should very briefly describe the situation. Usually the situation can be described in a sentence or two.
    (2) What you did. Second, describe the actions you took - what you did, what you made, who you talked to, what you said - in that situation. Use action verbs and first person, such as - "I wrote, " "I called, " "I discussed," and so on.
    (3) The result. Finally, tell the committee how it turned out. It should only take a sentence or two to describe the result.
    An example of a complete response to the question "Tell me about a time when you had to set up and type a document" appears below:
    Situation: My boss asked me to set up and type a complicated document with headers and footers. I had never used headers or footers before.
    Action: I obtained a copy of the software manual and read about using headers and footers. Then, I set up the document and gave my boss an example page to look at before I developed the whole document.
    Result: My boss edited the example I gave him and liked the final document when I was finished.
    *Interview Tips
    -Don't spend too much time on a question.
    -When asked about your previous experiences, describe (a) the situation you encountered, (b) what you did in that situation, and (c) how it turned out.
    -Avoid irrelevant topics. Focus on the questions that the committee asks.
    -Speak clearly and loudly enough for the committee to hear and understand you.
    -Relax, Relax, Relax. The interview is not an interrogation. It is simply an opportunity for you to meet and speak with the Apprenticeship Committee.
    -Get a good night's rest the day before and put your best foot forward during your interview.
    Interview Preparation
    The interview contains questions about how you have handled situations that are relevant to occupational success. To prepare for the interview, make a list of jobs you have had, special projects that you have worked on at school or at home, and extracurricular activities that you have participated in. Be prepared to discuss your hobbies, your interests, activities you enjoy, as well as those you have no interest in.
    Before the interview, review your list of activities. Think about situations that stand out in your mind because you did something that you are particularly proud of; you learned an important lesson; or you had to respond to a real challenge. Thinking about situations you have encountered in the past will help you respond to the Committee's questions. It will also help minimize stress during the interview.

    I just did the interview this morning and I was super nervous but turned out well. I did do a lot of research from you and some other CZcamsrs plus purchased some preparation stuff online. I dressed really well, brought portfolios for the 6 people that were there and they all immediately looked through it. The interview was super short around 10 minutes or less. They asked me about 8 questions I believe. They really liked the wood project I attached to my portfolio and someone commented on the quality of the paper lol. It was some expensive paper from fedex. I appreciated that they paid attention to these things and I noticed they all looked surprised when I went to shake everyone’s hands they must not get that much. All in all I did my best and followed all advice I could. I think I did really well and the questions were super simple no behavioral interview questions. I’ll hear back in a week, the chances are very small 9-10 people selected out of 90 but I just gotta hope for the best!

    Can I go to trade school to learn more on the theory and academic side since I've been out of school for a while and struggle with math? Or would it better to take a remedial class for math at a college if that's what I mostly need help on? With the the trade school, after about a year when you graduate you're considered a second year apprentice. The college also offers electrical in their vocational programs.

      @jaythus3181 Před 9 dny +1

      @@HabituaILineStepper I'm not the guy that posted that but here's my experience with a degree from one of my local community colleges.
      I struggled to find a job at some larger companies due to that being my only relevant experience in the field, having additional college education before hand, and general job finding blues. I did, however, get a non-union job at a smaller (mid-sized) company and I start on the first, and I believe that the trade school and talking to electricians, former and current, helped with that. At the very least it'll help you network and get some good references. As for how trade school will go with the union, it'll likely knock off some classes off the required schooling (although depending on your union/branch it might not) and might bump you up in the rankings for an interview assuming you do well on the test. Personally, my trade school had an exit exam that was a sort of mock journeymans exam mixed with the union electrical apprenticeship exams and I don't think anyone in my graduating class scored under a 70% on it, well except for a guy that didn't take it, so it will likely help you to gain confidence in the application exam and prepare for it, however it is 1-2 years out of your life outside of the trade. My state makes it worth the time, but yours might not.

    Does everyone have to do the aptitude test regardless of which type of electrical work they want to do? I'm mostly interested in doing residential work.
    How brutal was the math section on your test? I haven't gone to school since 2006 and my math was pretty meh. I passed with C's and I never really got to Algebra because they just kinda gave me the "no kid left behind" treatment. Khan Academy has helped a lot though, I'm not pretty damn good at long division and multiplication and starting Algebra 1 soon. Did you have any problems with the math part? Like, they don't start throwing linear algebra at you in the test do they? lol

    • @SparkysJourney
      @SparkysJourney  Před 3 lety

      Every local is different right now. I applied to two locals and one didnt require the test because of Covid. The other local required a certain score for each program I believe. Inside wireman and residential both have to get a 5 or higher (out of 9). L/E had to take the test but their scores didn’t matter. It was just for “educational purposes”. Do you have at least two years of algebra on your high school transcripts? That is a requirement. The Math section is half the test and it’s multiple choice. It’s mostly algebra and graphing. It wasn’t hard for me BUT if you struggle with algebra it might more difficult. I would suggest taking a few courses on Khan Academy and watching as many CZcams videos as you can. If you fail the test you won’t be able to retake it for 6 months so it should be taken seriously. Good luck!

      I didn’t have experience as an electrician but I have worked as a material handler for two union shops. Any experience in The field will give you a leg up in the interview. Experience aside, Ultimately they want someone who is committed to the program and is in it for the long haul. They don’t want someone who they think will drop out after 2 years. • @SparkysJourney
      @SparkysJourney  Před 3 lety +1

      If you finish trade school you will probably have a leg up on someone who didn’t go through trade school. Ultimately I think experience is everything. If you have any experience in the trade you will be put near the top of the list (contingent on test scores and interview scores) But above everything they are looking for people who are going to commit and finish their apprenticeship. They want to invest in you and they want to make sure you are in this for the long haul. They can really tell if you are serious or not during the interview so make sure to study. Show them that. Show them that you are dedicated. As far as knowing someone In The union, it probably won’t make a difference. The whole point of the union is to be fair and make sure everyone is treated equally. That being said it doesn’t hurt and I’ve heard of guys getting in faster than normal because of who they know. Each local is different and each state is different. Some states are in desperate need of apprentices and you might fly through the process. Other states are extremely slow and it might take years to get in. I’m still on the list and the entire process has taken over a year for me (coronavirus has been a big factor) Anyways Good luck and I hope to see you out there!
