    I am honestly blown away that a Dev has proven you can release a finished module within the given timeframe. ED has no excuses now.

      Well in fairness, the Kiowa was delayed at least two or three years from their original target date, so I wouldn't say it's a good show of holding a release window.
      But fully featured on launch, nearly 100% complete? Yeah, that's stellar.

      The given timeframe elapsed 2 years ago, lmao. But yeah, glad to finally have this bird in the skies of DCS despite all the dorama going on these releases breathe new life to the game.

      Sir, we're sorry you have to find out this way, you.... you've been in a coma for the last 4 years. The current year is 2024. The devs had initially planned to release 2020.

      @@thetrainshop This was all being done by a team VIRTUALLY in the first place. So, the pandemic should not have had as big of an impact on the development as it did. They lost a team member and had to recreate the 3D model but the systems stuff could have still been being worked on while they waited for that. There is a reason why I started to call this thing vaporware, and kept calling it that up until yesterday when I finally bought it after waiting for 4 years.

    I've got a small amount of experience with NVG's IRL, having only worn them a handful of times(on the ground, not flying), but DCS does a decent job of mimicking the IRL FOV. It's super hard to transpose the true FOV you would have IRL onto a 2D screen, but I appreciate how it's implemented in DCS for the "immersion"

    Flew the Kiowa for the first time today. Took of without incident, flew 25 minutes and took out too taliban who were firing on an SF team, with my M4. Got lots of holes in my Kiowa. Flew low and fast back home to base. Buzzing trees, orchards, and grass. Landed slightly worse than i took off. But no major drama and superb given it was my very first landing. Love the Kiowa.

  • @ImpendingJoker

    Yes, a thing that people that have never used NODs in real life don't know is that these things are not pressed against your face like you would a pair of binoculars, so you can still look around the eyepieces with your peripheral vision. I used the single tube 7A NODs for driving on the ground and let me tell you that sucks in real life to be robbed of your depth perception then try to navigate off road surfaces while avoiding obstacles. The 6Bs are dual tube and give you great depth perception but a very narrow FOV, so like Casmo says, you have to keep your head on a swivel to see and avoid obstacles, and yes, it looks quite similar to how DCS simulates it, complete with the pulsing of the bright spots as the different phosphorous tubes are stimulated by the light. Keep in mind there are newer versions of these today but I got out of the Army in 2003.

  • @applejax15t1f

    I've spent a lot of hours with an AN/AVS-6 strapped to my poor head. This is probably just because I'm watching this on a phone, but the FOV seems a bit narrow to me. Like they are being worn too far away from the face. But it's been years. And when you spend 80% of your waking hours wearing them, that limited fov and lack of depth perception starts feeling normal. Your brain just sort of reprograms itself to rely on monocular cues, and I'm not sure that can really be conveyed on a screen. I'm excited to try it in VR. A lot of other moduals NVGs just make the whole screen green, and then I try and peak under my vr headset to read the instruments only to discover my desk😂
    Overall this looks pretty close to how those NVGs look (if you happen to sign out a really good set). It would be cool to see a bit of halo around lights, or a little chicken wire.
    The tracers look dead on to me. I'm pretty excited for this.

    Things just got a lot more interesting. Always loved night flying. Didn't even know till now it had this sort of capability.
    I think people tend to think dual nvg tubes give you a slightly wider field of view which a lot of games tend to show as 2 circles kinda like a venn diagram. Not sure how realistic that is but I could understand the confusion given how popular GPNVG-18s have gotten recently.

    Cockpit lighting is usually adjusted to the lowest visible level to be seen by the pilots. This does two things;
    1) It makes it easier to see out of the cockpit when looking without or around the NVGs (unaided).
    2) It makes it harder for the enemy when flying on dark nights. Don't give them something to aim at. Lost a few friends because of that.
