Check out Brilliant at www.brilliant.org/SamBarker/ Tired of those hot summer days and want to ski? Fear not! Ice skis you can ski anytime..... Maybe.....
Another thing to consider is that a ski's surface is extremely smooth, so if we're reversing that relationship with the ground, then the surface you're attempting to "ice" across should be very smooth as well.
@@SamBarker A paved road would be smoother, though as @Warren Harper pointed out, mud would be too. I've heard the UK does occasionally get rain, or at least fog. Also note that narrower ends (or mimicking cross-country skis instead of downhill) might help. And I think having an extra sacrificial layer of regular ice to keep smoothing the way might be more important than it seems -- skiing and ice-skating both start to fail when you get off that sacrificial area to dry ground.
The amount of channels ripping off OfficialDuckStudios without giving them credit is astounding First markiplier with the ikea boat (ods was first) Some random dude named Edward with guns in concrete when ods was first in trying to win a Darwin Award And you copying their sledding video (albeit they only gave it the ol college dropout try)
I once tried to make coffins out of pykrete. The idea being that coffins are such a temporary construction, only being used for a matter of days. So why would we use such long lasting materials. They could retain their structure and strength for the time it was needed, and then over time they would either melt away naturally underground, or be melted in the cremation oven. The translucent/opaque nature of the pykrete would also preserve privacy if the body inside. Nobody really seemed too keen on the idea though 🤔
That’s a neat idea. I’ve always thought about why we have such ornate coffins when they’re only gonna be seen for a day or two. I doubt many of them are biodegradable either, and this is a cool solution. Kinda like permafrost in a way lol.
Simple solution, make the coffins out of wicker or other such material. My granddad was buried in such a coffin with the idea being that it will rot away quickly and allow soil/water/biodegraders to penetrate quickly so that the body may return to the earth. It was still opaque of course and imo just as if not more pretty than other caskets made of wood.
I wonder about using something like wax as the pycrete filler. My thinking is derived from sand boarding where wax is used as a lubricant/anti static to help boards slip down dunes. Also thinking that a housing for the ice would help avoid the need for high tensile strength filler(which is likely to increase friction).
Bro the first thing I thought of when you showed that one was slippery or than the other is make the skis out of pykrete and then spray water on the bottom of them in thin layers and let it freeze and just keep doing that over the course of days until you have a nice ice later built upon the bottom after they've come out of the mold
Perhaps instead of having one side be entirely ice at the end, you should have used that mesh bit as a divider between a strong top layer, and a weaker layer that still has an amount of cotton, though the time of tuning in on what a good ratio is would be more freezing time than practical.
You have huge potential to blow up! I think you should make your next video either in the style of mr beast or mark rober! I promise you, if you take time and edit it really smoothly and make the video super interesting! You’ll definitely get a million views! Especially if you make it an ad must like how I discovered this video! Also I’d do the same thing for the thumbnail!
5:15 happened to me on the mountain. Exactly what you would think happens, happened. Hilarity ensued 6:00 Also had that happen, but in my defense I was 5 yrs old. Trick is to use flowing water to help unstick it. I didn't as I was hoping my Mother wouldn't find out, couldn't taste food for days
If only there was a way you could do this but instead of using ice using wheels. And not just wheels but a thin long row of wheels. Like a blade but of wheels that rolls down a hill. Call it wheeler blades or something 🤔
If you made ski’s from tarmac and tried going down a slope - they wouldn’t move. Which is the same reason yours didn’t work. You need a polished concrete floor like in a warehouse or a shopping centre - milton keynes springs to mind 😅
With that road surface, your analogy is wrong. What you did is like trying to ski with some tank tracks. Although I doubt you'll find roads as smooth as the ski surface as that defeats their purpose.
the ski without snow project would of worked with Graphite because the graphite is made up of layers of carbon atoms. Because these layers are weakly bonded together, they slide over each other easily. Meaning the ski can slide without snow #science
Another thing to consider is that a ski's surface is extremely smooth, so if we're reversing that relationship with the ground, then the surface you're attempting to "ice" across should be very smooth as well.
I agree blame the uk for their useless roads! 🤣
@@SamBarker i rekon you would of had more luck after a downpour.🤣🤣

@@jocaleb0236 I'm glad your opinion doesn't matter.

The financial benefits from a pykrete coffin compared to a “standard” one would be phenomenal
I'm glad that Tom has a place he can go to let his hair down and be a little silly.
You have the most ridiculous, yet incredibly interesting ideas. We have all wondered if this would work at some point.
Love these videos. This man asks the real questions.

Keep calm and carry on - I like how you don’t give up and roll with the punches 💪🏻
I enjoyed your program very much. I have no-doubt that someday one of your projects will save lives..
such a cool project!
It’s great to see you post again!
Thank you, it’s been a busy summer at work, I look forward to a more active CZcams winter
“For my male audience”
👀 proceeds to grunt satisfactorily
Now to go watch that crazy skiier that does this in the summer, but with ski's.
Great mix of hijinks and R&D! Was just wondering the other day when we'd get another upload :)
This is so excellent and stupid at the same time. Good job!
Brilliant bud. More More More please
I had an old pair of ski boots that did exactly that while I was skiing. Crumbled into pieces!
You should try making roller skis. I remember seeing keen Nordic (cross-country) skiers using them in Norway in the summer.
This should be super good!
you deserve wayyyyyyy more veiws and subs than what you got now, i honestly thoight you were much bigger when i saw ur first vids!
"...while I retrieve the other Ice Ski from the freezer one of the smartest people I know..."
Could you pour (cold) water onto the pykrete to freeze a thin layer of ice onto it?

This is the smartest idea ever.😃
Use pbc pipes or plastic boards it glides well on hard surfaces

As a Colorado man who skis every weekend during the season, I approve of this.
Make some skies out of the same bristles that they use for a dry sky slope... so bring your dry ski slope with you... lol
Just use roller blades and stick things? The rollers will need to be able articulate from side to side?
I did once see somebody using old boots to ski.. and have one explode on them on the hill.
6:00 Thanks, that made my day. :D
Can it snow without skies?
What about making roller skis from slalom skis.
What the fuck am I watching? This is brilliant

Where do you find pyrite or did you make it?

Make these out of 100% (glacial) acetic acid (vinegar), it melts at 17C as opposed to 0C.
Tom Stanton in his own videos: Articulate, intelligent, brilliant engineer
Tom here: Total goofball
Love it.
Picrete is more vurnable on kinetic energy. than constant weight.

Ah yes, my favourite material, Pine Creek
maybe a wooden ski with a rough bottom surface, and make ice layers on that... so you don't end up making a huge weight lol
Should have used flex tape lol
With that road surface, your analogy is wrong. What you did is like trying to ski with some tank tracks. Although I doubt you'll find roads as smooth as the ski surface as that defeats their purpose.
I mean, there's a reason why ski are smooth and waxed. So, if you can smooth a road and wax it, it might work. Or just make skis with wheels.
HE'S NOT DEAD!
That roofing tape is the stickiest sealing tape out there. Beats flex tape by a mile because it doesn't shrink.

Wouldnt making a snowboard out of this stuff make for the perfect ride? Yeah it would be heavy, but man the friction is gonna be low.
ありがとう❤
👍いいね!
maybe try a freebord? ;)
Those are ventilation ducts 😊
don't tell this man about rollerblades
soooo funny!!!
Go to a dry slope then you won’t need to resin a pair of skies
Yes dry ski slopes have been around forever
To bad you didn't just create a backyard slingshot to ski on the grass.
Make the pykrete ship
Spong Bob Square Ski's
Should've made it a board and called it a snowboard
he did the turbo flex ad right 3:47
By Darwin's mustache!
And if you use wool you could probably get similar performance without leaving a trail of plastic microfiber pollution behind you 👍
Sand Skiing is a thing...
try roller skis
They invented roller skates
надо идею подкинуть для гаража 54
Jojo white album reference
Try riding an electric unicycle; just like skiing.
bro used youtube ads
Just put wheels ons the bottom of skis and it will work 1billion times better
this video was just a cavalcade of incompetence lol
you should buy a plastic welder
you know road skis exist right?
down a grass hill they may have worked better
