In the video it was a close call, if he had not slowed down, the blue shell would have taken more time to reach him, in fact just enough to hit him just after the star goes off.

That mushroom dodge in the sewer track was epic. I've never dodged a blue shell with a mushroom. I just can't get the timing right.
Im 3 years late to tell you, but when the blue shell catches up to you it will spin around and dip back and forward before dropping. When the shell tips to show you its spikes, thats when you use the mushroom.
