Taro tends to get a bad rap for being a silly and child-friendly show, but upon watching it it really surprised me. The quality of the storytelling and special effects are as high as ever, and the focus on stories meant to appeal to children mean that a lot of the episodes feel whismical or even fairy-tale esque in nature. Even the extremely outlandish episodes have some kind of moral for the kids at home to take away from. It's the rare show that can feel grounded in one moment, but feel like a complete fever dream the next.
My favourite episodes are the Ultra Brothers episodes, you really get to feel the familial bond between them and how much the Brothers truly are for each other, how they appear to help Taro when the stakes are at their highest.
It's easy to see why Taro specifically is so beloved in Japan, the children who grew up watching it back im the day are probably the adults now looking back on it with fondness.
Looking forward to the Leo video.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I didn't have high expectations for it because of all the negative reputation the show had in the western fanbase and also Ace was in my opinion was disappointing. But like you I found myself surprised as to just how fun and entertaining the show was. I couldn't believe at first how invested I got into this series

My expectations to watch ultraman Taro: Ah, a very specifically child friendly series, no high stakes, just silly monsters
Ultraman Taro: Birdon eating people, The giant turtles desperately fighting to save their one remaining kid, the mother dealing with the loss of her child by defending and trying to save the injuried baby kaiju…
      Me: 🥺🥺🥺

I know it OVERALL has a lighter tone but in the first few episodes you have Taro getting his arm brutally crushed repeatedly by Live King and later getting repeated stabbed and poisoned by Birdon until he straight up dies covered in grime and blood (poor Zoffy gets it from Birdon too), those were probably some of the single most traumatic scenes of my childhood growing up aside from the Murphy execution scene in Robocop.
Those scenes still haunt me to this day.

The ZAT team died but then the Ultra Brothers possessed their bodies, but then some random volleyballl team jogging by got blown up by Temperor but then the Ultra Brothers possessed their bodies, but then Temperor was like no bitches and zapped them and they blew up....but then immediately in the next scene we see the volleyball players lying on the ground and the ZAT team syaing theyre okay. and then some kids throw some red balls in the sky and all the Ultra brothers pop out of them with...parachutes (why do they need parachutes?) Then it ends with the the 6 Ultra brothers effortlessly taking out Temperor which just seemed like an unfair advantage on their part (which then why did they go through the whole hassle of hiding as humans and nearly dying several times>) ZAT team somehow ressurected along with said volleyball team and the Ultra brothers flying away. wat??

It kind of makes Ultraman Cosmos the Heisei version of Taro.

  • @OutdatedLeon

One of the memorable episodes for me was when Taro was defeated by Birdon, and Zoffy came to take his place to protect Earth. However, when he faced the bird monster, he too got pawned really hard. There was a scene when Birdon breathed fire, Zoffy's head caught fire and you can feel the horror that Zoffy felt when that happened with the score and his trembling.
Well, I've heard a rumor that the part where Zoffy's head caught on fire was entirely accidental and Zoffy panicking was entirely the suit actor genuinely panicking. But the camera was rolling, so the Birdon suit actor improvised by throwing Zoffy into the pond of water nearby. idk if the rumor was true but this little trivia rumor made an already memorable scene the more unforgettable.

Thats nuts. How bout the one episode about the creepy Manga artist incel guy who invited his high school crush, one of the members of ZAT to his mansion for a reunion only for her to find out he wanted to kidnap her and he was using a kaiju (Gallan) as his telepathic connection to do his bidding. So whatever he drew, it would make Gallan do whatever he wanted. Kinda like his Stand. I wouldnt be surprised if this was inspiration for Araki to create the manga artist character Rohan in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 4.
Also, in said characters room was a poster of the 1968 horror film Twisted Nerve. I never saw that movie so I looked it up and the main song used in it was the whistling song used in Kill Bill by Quintin Tarantino. Interesting....

Ultraman Taro has the distinction of being the only series for which the Ultra's human host is never seen again after the series. They wanted him in Ultraman Mebius but he wasn't available when it came time to film the Taro episode so of all the Showa Ultras only Taro appears in Mebius without his human form. Even Ace's male host has a brief encounter with Ace's former female host.
Ace was adopted by Taro's parents Father and Mother of Ultra so they consider each other brothers. And Ultraman and Jack apparently biological brothers. Otherwise the Ultra Brothers are brothers in arms not literal brothers. And in Ultraman Mebius, its said that its the humans of Earth who called them the Ultra Brothers in the first place, in fact the name Ultraman comes from humans, so we don't actually know the first giant hero's true name. In Ultraman Mebius they have files on all Showa Ultramans, earth teams and the monsters. Apparently missing is the fact that the Ultras take on human form because everyone is shocked to find out one of their team is really Ultraman Mebius.

Over the past couple years, I've been watching some Ultraman, Return of Ultraman, & now Taro. I do not understand how this version is the Japanese fanbase's most beloved iteration. I don't want to be a dick about it, but I don't really think Taro is worth a shot with the complete throwaway of even no-brainer physics & almost non-existent creativity the prior versions showcased.

I'm also glad they developed Taro; it really pissed me off how ruthless he was toward any & all of the kaiju for most of the show, plus the show never seemed to mourn a tragic kaiju death like the earlier versions did.
