- Captain Ruben F. was a Southwest Pilot for almost 31 years. Throughout his inspiring career, he shared his passion with many young aviators through the Adopt-A-Pilot program and on his trips. He even mentored his family to pursue a career in the skies too. He’s joined at Southwest Airlines by his brother, Captain Christopher S.; cousin, First Officer Chuck J.; and-most recently-his son, First Officer Ruben F. Captain Ruben shared many of his flights before retirement with his family, including his last flight from Omaha, Neb., to Chicago with his son serving in his right-hand seat, as his First Officer. Tears and and a beautiful legacy. Well done.
So beautiful to see a legacy of family aviators. It's really amazing to think how the original legacy of Herb Kelleher spawned the creation of so many other legacies across the company. Gotta love Southwest!
Happy Retirement Sir!! Mike Duryea, SWA Ramp Agent in Burbank. 1996 - Present
Flown with this gentleman, he is a sweetheart and such a wonderful guy! We will miss him.
I used to work with Ruben (the son)at the start of his career. About 8 years ago now. It’s crazy to think how long ago that was, and how far Ruben has gone in his career.
He’s such a kind, soft spoken person. Always one of the first pilots to clock in, always on time and never late. Always tried to take care of us rampers as much as he could, which just makes us want to turn him as quickly as we can.
Im so glad I happened to stumble across this.
Sending love your way from the boys in Boulder City! Keep on keeping on man!

I watched a lot of “family cockpit” stories but for some reason, this one really touched me. You can just tell this guy was very respected and loved by everyone. It made me cry.
Ruben is the best!!!
Good job Ruben, a long happy journey. I was happy to spend some time with you and family. All the best buddy.
Bravo! Beautiful family + legacy. God bless.
It is because of stories like this that I do not lose faith in humanity.
The best Guy You will ever know.... Thank you for all you do!
What a touching video Captain! Every time I see you, you have a smile on your face, and that’s been over 30 years! Godspeed and what a legacy you are leaving my friend!!!
How beautiful, I love you all. I fly Southwest every week and I enjoy it a lot.
My late Dad, USAF Col. James R. Haun, in his retirement taught both Capt. Ruben Flowers and his brother, Capt. Chris Sailor to fly in a little Cessna 150 in the late 80's. Being two of his most outstanding students, he mentioned them on p.-201 of his aviation auto-biography: SPITFIRE WINGMAN FROM TENNESSEE - my love affair with flight.
This is so very cool and emotional. Congratulations to both Reubens. May your next adventure be your best adventure. Congratulations on a job well done! You have made a big impact!
southwest has always been so welcoming to me. i remember the first time i flew with southwest, the flight attendants brought me up to the cockpits and the pilots showed me the cockpit. it was so interesting, i fell in love with aviation and now i want to work for southwest when i am an adult.
This is a feel good story. I had the the pleasure of working with the younger Ruben and his sister. They truly are great people. Congratulations my friend
